I do miss Windows Phone. It was awesome and the Nokia I had was one of my favorite phones. I mean, I’m sure Microsoft would have destroyed it if they didn’t already kill it, but I did love it.

I think the connection issues may be overblown. I’m not saying people aren’t having problems, but I’ve had a P6P and a P7P and neither have had issues with 5G connections in the US or abroad. My P6P was passed to a family member who’s still using it and hasn’t had any issues.

I personally don’t like any skins, and OneUI drives me nuts. It feels like they move stuff around just to play with your mind. I would also swear Samsung bakes ads into its apps. I also don’t appreciate the Apple like ecosystem of our stuff only fully works with our stuff, e.g. Galaxy Watch and ECG.

My VW is this way and it’s infuriating. It drives me nuts that Down is Next, it’s so backwards.

Volume should be up/down, and track left/right.

I’m curious if the left/right would be language dependent? English is left to right, so Right would be Next. Would Hebrew and Arabic be the opposite since they’re right to left languages?

Technically you are not required to have auto insurance. The law (most states if not all?) requires “financial responsibility”. This can be achieved by filing a bond with the state instead of paying for insurance.

However, insurance is far and away the most cost effective way to meet financial responsibility requirements. The coverage is greater and the costs are much cheaper.

Or, don’t drive. Spend the money on investing in mass transit and walkable cities and then you don’t have the cost of insurance, a vehicle, maintenance, or fuel. If only it were that easy…

Agreed, it’s not easy, and I don’t suggest it is.

I’m in a similar boat, living in a suburb in county land where the closest grocery store is 15 minutes away. There’s no chance in hell Phoenix will move away from cars in my lifetime.

My only option is to move to a city with infrastructure already built. Housing will be more, but not having the costs associated with car ownership vastly outweighs the cost of housing increases. But again, it’s not that easy.

The truth is, there is no easy answer to the rising costs. Public companies must make a profit. If there are more frequent losses and those losses are more expensive, the only thing to do is raise premiums.

Making the companies “public” like Citizens doesn’t fix things either, it just makes them susceptible to politics, which will always come back to bite.

That looks like the “Move” reminder. It will slowly grow to make the red bar solid until you get up and move for a few minutes. Then it will reset into the pieces. It’s used to remind you to get up and move.

Have you tried ADHD medications as an alternative to dopamine reuptake inhibitors?

I want to switch up Zoloft for another ssri, but they often dulls myself in a way I can’t act spontaneously and become more like unintrested which Zoloft is free of. I tend to associate this phenomena with Zoloft’s weak activity as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. And since wellbutrin is illegal in my state, I can’t have it...

I was prescribed a lot of different drugs before being diagnosed ADHD. The only SSRI that ever had an effect on me personally was Wellbutrin, but only for about a week. After that, even changing dosages, had no effect. That week the Wellbutrin worked I was a robot. No emotion, just “work”. Need to do the dishes…did the dishes. Need to work, productivity about 400% for the week, etc. I’m on Addrrall now, but it’s nothing like being on Wellbutrin. This was just my experience.

I wouldn’t expect an ADHD med to have an effect on you, or if it did it could be similar to your previous experiences with other SSRI’s.

Agree with the other poster though. Not sure where you are, but no state in the US bans Wellbutrin or Adderall. If you’re not in the US though, then I can’t offer any advice.

I actually switched to openSUSE Tumbleweed from Ubuntu and love it. I know it’s not as popular, but I can’t see why. Rolling release, compatibility, support, it’s awesome!

The only thing that drives me nuts on a regular basis is the lack of fully functional Microsoft apps. Specifically Teams and Outlook. Unfortunately I work with Microsoft shops constantly and need those two apps. Outlook PWA has issues and freezes constantly. Teams PWA just doesn’t do notifications.

That’s it.

But Windows blows and Macs are just too damned expensive.

I’ll try Teams for Linux. Teams for Firefox does give notifications, but doesn’t support background pictures or screen sharing. Well, last I checked.

I didn’t know that was an option! I’ve been running the Chrome extension to disable automatic gain. I have had better luck using Edge than Chrome for the PWA, and they have a flatpak to make it easier. The only thing I miss now is the multiple windows like you get on a Mac/Windows where the call doesn’t take over the chat window.

I use both. For most of the time I use AdGuard, with the same block lists I use in Pi-Hole. The reason for this is I can set it up on devices and use it everywhere, not just at home. This is very easy on both iOS and Android. I also have my home router setup to use AdGuard. My electricity provider has more small outages than I would like which caused issues when things tried to come back online.

I use my Pi-Hole for my VPN which has a dedicated IP address. So when I’m out of the house working I can use the VPN and still take advantage of the Pi-Hole.

I’ve run a Pi-Hole for years, and AdGuard for the past year or so. Honestly, I’ve had zero issues with AdGuard and it requires zero maintenance. The Pi-Hole I still have to update and apply patches, to Pi-Hole and the OS. It’s not a big deal, but AdGuard is set it and forget it.

Agreed. The only time I use a wire is on Delta flights with seat back entertainment. I can’t stand wires, they drive me nuts. I’ve been using Bluetooth headphones since they came out and their flexibility is unmatched.

Running on a treadmill watching tv? Done. Watching a TV 20’ away so the sound doesn’t wake my wife? Done. Working at a Starbucks and being able to walk to the counter for an order? Done. Automatic start/stop and device switching? Done.

Yes they runs on batteries, but so does the rest of my life. Keeping things charged has never been an issue. I have over the ears with 24+ hours of battery life and in-ears with 6 hours. I have never had an issue with them being dead.

One reason I can see for a jack, maybe, is for audiophiles who run high end setups. But even those I think use a DAC and not the jack.

I’m not saying people don’t want the jack, I just don’t understand it. 🤷‍♂️

Gaming laptop with good Linux support?

A similar question was raised some day’s ago from a other person, but with different background. In this case, I would like to buy a nice gaming laptop. Of course I would use it for office and coding to, but primary I’m searching recommendations for gaming. I would like to play Wine/Proton game’s and also native Linux...

I picked up a 2022 G14 RX6700s about a week ago from Beat Buy for $750. I added a 32GB memory stick to bring it up to 40GB. I also replaced the SSD with a 2TB 980 Pro. Since it’s all AMD it works without any futzing. I’m running openSUSE Tumbleweed and so far it all just works. Sleep, dual GPU’s, everything. I did add the AMD P-State flag which helped battery life tremendously. Even sleep just worked out of the box which is the first time I’ve ever had that experience.

My normal workload runs MS SQL Server in a docker container, two distroboxes for specific software, Outlook and Teams PWA apps, VSCode, Azure Data Studio, Firefox, and a couple of terminals windows, and it sits at about 8.5GB of memory idle. With Bluetooth connected and streaming YouTube Music and doing development I’m able to get about 7-8 hours of battery life.

I only play D3, D4, World of Warships, and Guild Wars 2. It plays those games without any issue even at 4K. I do recognize those games aren’t Starfield, so keep that in mind. For me, it works great and it been the easiest experience with Linux I’ve had.

At least with Tumbleweed. I tried Pop_OS! first and it worked great, until launching games on Steam froze X11 and required me jumping to a TTY screen to kill everything. So far Tumbleweed with Distrobox is giving me the best of everything and I’m loving it.

Adderall, 20mg once a day when I wake up, no side effects other than lack of appetite. On Vyvanse, I had rapid heartbeat and jitteriness, and in some ways it made the “squirrels” even louder. I also had appetite suppression, but it was more binary and off/on than Adderall and the binge eating was harder to control as the day wore on.

I’m also sleeping better with Adderall vs Vyvanse.

I’m sorry to hear your side effects.

Just because you don’t like something shouldn’t make it illegal. I don’t agree with the burning’s, I think the action is merely to get people riled up. Either that or there’s a deeper emotional problem that’s not being dealt with.

If Sweden were to cave and ban the burning’s, where do you draw the line next. Now a precedent has been set that you can move the line, so how far does it move next? The time after that?

A free society (as it exists in Sweden) comes with an understanding that someone may do something you don’t like, and that’s ok.

As an Apple fan who’s used Macintosh’s since the Mac Plus, no. Apple’s software choices have gone downhill over the years and they’re now firmly entrenched in their “Our way or the highway” mentality. Remember when Apple’s marketing was “Think Different?”.

Even today, opening a Finder window (which infuriatingly still doesn’t have a shortcut) using the shortcut for search (Option-Command-Space) brought up the window BENEATH other apps ON A DIFFERENT MONITOR. I mean, what the actual F?

And I don’t want to get started on their impossible window management without Rectangle or the hideous text unless you’re using a HiDPI monitor the way Apple wants you too. Why would I pay for a 4K monitor to get 1080P resolution?

You’re right about the software downloads though. You did forget to mention the ages it takes to install. Somehow Apple makes Windows updates looking speedy in comparison.

I want the hardware, not the software. At least Apple isn’t locking that.

Starting up steam will sometimes crash Gnome

When starting up stream and along side a game, it will sometimes make every application crash and unresponsive then the OS will lock up, any reason why this happens? I’ve had better luck using the Flatpak version of Steam than either the repo version or downloaded from Steam. On 22.04 I could not get the Gnome launcher to work at all for either and had to use the terminal. No issues using the Flatpak version. It also works with Proton-Up, which is also available as a Flatpak.

As for your issue specifically, you could look at the logs, but the only way I know to do that is via the Terminal, and you mentioned you don’t want to do that.

It will most definitely be logged if it’s Gnome crashing. If the entire system is crashing that’s a very different story, and if you’re hard resetting it sounds like a system crash, not Gnome specifically. Depending on how it crashes, there may be logs.

Saw this happen and just shook my head. I don’t recall the last time I’ve seen a driver collapse so quickly and spectacularly.
