About by PCalc for visionOS is now available!

Perhaps the most pointless app on Vision Pro, but still quite fun to play with. This is a complete remake of the original PCalc About screen in VR. It's basically me experimenting with what's possible today with RealityKit, over-engineering things as usual, and then for some inexplicable reason actually shipping it. I hope you enjoy it!

Hundreds of objects swirl around a PCalc icon.
A lovely view of the public transport options in the PCalc About screen.
A distant dragon watches over the city.

A couple months ago, I went to this VR experience and one of the walls was a timeline of stereoscopic, 3D, and VR devices and concepts through the ages

The earliest stereoscope was invented in the early 1830s. I find it fascinating how humans have been interested in 3D/depth imagery

Then, just recently I happened to stumble upon something in an antique store…

Focusing on the left side of the timeline wall of devices, we see at the top left the stereoscope made of wood with a paper insert.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spot a stereoscope! It’s slightly different from the one in the timeline wall, with a metal frame, but nonetheless I was intrigued

It was only $99 so I immediately scooped it up

Side by side to a modern sibling, the Apple Vision Pro

I find the curvature of the portion that you put up to your face to be fascinating

Inscribed into one side of the stereoscope is a patent date of June 14, 1881

Not particularly sure when this specific stereoscope was manufactured, but I’d guess anywhere between 1881 and the very early 1900s

Certainly this has become the oldest, and most fascinating, piece of technology I own 😎

Looking at the backside of each device side by side, both are strikingly similar in their curvature. The dual lenses for each eye are different, with Vision Pro being oval and the stereoscope being square
Etched into the hinge of the holding mechanism is a patent date of June 14, 1881

Do you “click” a link/button or “tap” it on a touchscreen?

I can’t help but say “click” like the good ol days.

whatthecj,
@whatthecj@mastodon.social avatar

@RobW click click click! Better not hold it against me 😂

I had an offer to work at an Apple Store in my college days, and I highly regret (like major life regret!) not taking it. It was just a little too far from my school

To think all of the marketing training that could have been instilled in me, alas I say “click”

@RobW it’s so overcast here in Los Angeles. Idk if it would have even been visible if not, but for sure not with the overcast :/

I don't want a Rabbit R1, but seeing videos of it reinforces how much I want to write software for extremely tiny, handheld hardware. I think about it almost every day. Is the Playdate the only accessible platform that allows this today?

whatthecj,
@whatthecj@mastodon.social avatar

@michaelsteeber not a consumer device, but this may be a neat option https://madmachine.io/

@michaelsteeber if you pick one up, I’d love to hear about it all

Today’s grumpy old man opinion:
Search bars that aren’t actually search bars but buttons that take you to a new screen are bad.

this is basically the backpacking trip through Europe I always wanted…except with 2 suitcases and an iMac https://mastodon.social/@rileytestut/112155945520419312

@rileytestut

Riley: “going to build an App Store for Europe”

Apple: “are you European? By the time we approve it you might be”

Registration has now closed, but if you happened to sign up for access to the EU/Apple DMA workshop today and have a password to log in, there's a 9-hour VOD available: https://webcast.ec.europa.eu/compliance-with-the-dma-apple-2024-03-18

@rileytestut you rocked that dude, from the question down to the sweatshirt. Proving exactly the point!
