Every talk I’ve every written has been an epic and bloody battle where I’m like 20 hours in before I figure out what the hell my point is. So I know the only path to victory is via writing and deleting a lot of garbage but aughhhh it’s so terrible.
Login to icloud on your iphone with an appleid which is a gmail address and then into your windows account on your laptop and that's also a gmail address but ofc with a different password, and Chrome on your iPhone and Chrome on your laptop talk to each other in ways you don't expect, but anyway your iPhone opens Safari half the time and Windows will convince you to use Edge if it kills you both so good luck finding where you opened gmail GODSPEED.
I just keep apologising. "No, no, it's not you, you're not doing anything wrong. It's... software is just terrible. I'm sorry. We suck. Yeah, I need another six digit notification code to update your account. It'll arrive in Messages. No, different from Whatsapp. Could you read it out over the phone? But don't ever read out the code if it's not me asking. Maybe grab a notebook to write down the eighteen passwords I'm about to give you. Sorry."
@danilo Oh hey, that's very cool! I'm new here–we just arrived last August–but I love it. There's something about being able to look up and see the mountains hanging there. Very very good for the psyche.
Btw. I really enjoyed your post today. It is, as you said, a messy time in tech. But I'm in for team "commitment to making sense of the mess". Thanks for writing it.
I'm trying out pixelfed for birding pictures. Does anyone else use it? It's another fediverse app, but sort of instagram-shaped instead of twitter-shaped.
I was trying to understand how people use it and how it's different from mastodon. The best comment I've found is that mastodon is a stream that's intended to just be of the moment (esp if you don't enable search) and pixelfed is more like you're building a photo album over time. Is that how other people think of it?
Service announcement: We'll be switching to the Winter duvet this afternoon, so there will be some disruption until the changeover is complete. You should have your data backed up. Please notify us if your service continues to be disrupted after we start back up.
If you sent me a mail and I didn't reply to it it's because my email backlog is currently so long that I'm considering faking my own death to escape it.
@hazelweakly It's weird to me how much easier it is to do DMs/Slack/whatever than email. Something about email raises the stakes and makes the task expensive in brain cycles.
Like, I was introducing two people last week and they agreed to be introduced via Whatsapp instead of email, and it's bizarre how much that reduced the cost of the "introduce two nice people to each other" operation. It was easy and pleasant instead of being a chore. What's that about?
(I'm not scared of bats, but I feel like trying to debug a pressure tank blockage in bad light while bats fly around your head is not an optimal bat situation.)
