Just...something that Ive always found interesting about Star Wars tech; the mix of digital and analog. You have sentient AI but you're still sending radio transmissions? Wired radio transmissions.

I love that bit. There's a whole "we don't know how this tech works any more" vibe that's super great

@Adam_Cadmon1

At several points Han and Chewbacca fix incredibly powerful tech (warp drives, etc) by thumping on a bulkhead in just the right place.

That is not the sign of somebody who genuinely knows how things work, just how to make it work.

At Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland there was a barbecue joint that was juked up to be a decommissioned starship drive with a few slave droids turning a carcass on a spit below the exhaust plume

Irene Pepperberg's theory is that parrots do not learn words by hearing the word in proximity to an event, rather they learn words by hearing flock members use a word during an interaction with another flock member https://mastodon.social/@JoeKozinski/112394735459907294

Seems reasonable to suggest that humans learn words in a similar way (literacy makes that a little muddier, of course)

New York Times editor Joe Kahn says defending democracy is a partisan act and he won’t do it | Press Watch
https://presswatchers.org/2024/05/new-york-times-editor-joe-kahn-says-defending-democracy-is-a-partisan-act-and-he-wont-do-it/

(But let me tell you about the Joe Kahn I am related to: 1/3)

trochee, (edited )
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

Joe Kahn shares a name with my grandfather, a Manhattanite who put himself through night school to get his CPA and literally helped defeat Hitler by doing accounting for the Army.

He (my grandpa Joe) was radicalized at Fort Bragg basic training, where the Jewish New Yorkers stuck together for protection against the hillbillies.

So a bunch of working class brainiacs (who had, as you might guess, thought a LOT about how money is used by power) introduced my granddad to Das Kapital.

(2/3)

trochee, (edited )
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

Grandpa Joe died in the 1980s, having been a member of the New York Communist Party since the end of the war.

I still remember his memorial service in the CPUSA headquarters, where I (a fourth grader) thought that the balding, goateed man in the painting was my grandpa. (It was Lenin.)

Weird thought that I might have to explore at some point: why is the word "violence" used to refer both to actions taken in opposition to and in support of systems of oppression?

We have different words for "up" and "down" or "left" and "right" as well as "vertical" and "horizontal," but the word "violence" never seems to imply a direction.

Somehow this makes me think of Samuel Delany's suggestion that the possessive is a structural problem in most widespread/imperial languages

(Why do we use the same "my" for "my hand", "my hammer", "my house", "my dog", "my child", "my spouse"?)

No one watches women's sports! (Because we don't televise the games 🤡).

So the WNBA premiere of Caitlin Clark was televised. But the WNBA premiere of Angel Reese (2023 champ who beat Caitlin Clark) and Kamila Cardoso (2024 champ who beat Caitlin Clark), wasn't televised or available to stream in the app. So... A fan set up a bootleg stream. 430K viewers tuned in to watch.🤯

Every once in a while I am amazed that one of the contenders for social media dominance right now is literally named "blue sky"

It's a term from project planning, and I'm pretty sure it's intended to mean "what you do if there were no constraints"

1/2

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

figuratively, "blue sky" is about halfway between "pie in the sky" (unrealistically optimistic) and "fair-weather friend/soldier" (someone who cannot be relied upon in hard times)

That they entirely overlook these rhetorical ankle-breaking potholes (as bad as "Uber", I mean, really) is the best evidence yet that the software engineering industry needs humanities people

This paper is trash. We do this every few years.

The conclusion is correct (graduate degree holding white men believe the most 'taboo' conspiracy theories), but the reasons it suggests why, are sociology-babble garbage. The real reason is:

  • Racism is a lie. To believe in racism, you must believe a set of easily debunkable lies.
  • Richer, whiter, maler, more educated populations are not less racist, despite attempts to twist stats to say this. They're more racist.

I think that *chan users are the tip of the iceberg here, & only the most obvious of a much more widespread phenomenon

A lot of supremacist beliefs are right below the surface in your average white suburbanite, especially in the "business owner" / "regional franchise manager" upper middle class "petty tyrant" professional cadre.

Just look at, eg, who steps up to oppose public transportation or bike lanes, or to grumble on local talk radio about "those people"
