winterayars,

Pretty sure you can configure “open as root” in some file managers. Also you can configure a gksudo (or similar) setup.

Really though, that makes me think. The file manager should detect you’re opening something you don’t have write access to and ask if you want to authenticate as root to open it.

winterayars,

Yeah, car thieves are famously very particular about laws relating to cars.

…Wait a minute… No, it’s the opposite of that.

winterayars,

It’s not just today, even his contemporaries kinda sucked and mostly didn’t like him.

winterayars,

Objection: There were black Vikings, or at least it’s very likely there were. Probably not a lot of them, though.

winterayars,

we’re almost certainly looking at overly broad attempts to silence neo-Nazi denialism propaganda and not some sort of intended censorship of the actual history.

And that’s probably what the NY Post is actually upset about.

winterayars,

Here’s a Smithsonian article: smithsonianmag.com/…/dna-analysis-reveals-vikings…

Here’s a different one, from… i dunno the site but this roughly reflects my understanding: scandinaviafacts.com/were-the-vikings-black/

I think generic testing is pretty suspect but at the same time we have more than just that to suggest this.

Remember, also, that the Vikings (like other people of their era) didn’t have an understanding of race in the sense we do today. Surely they had some concept of people having different skin color (they traveled enough) and of family lineage but the pseudoscientific idea of race theory has yet to be invented.

Anyway we can be pretty confident Viking slaves (thralls) were sometimes non-white and we know thralls could buy their freedom and free people could take up viking (the profession) so it stands to reason that there could be some. That plus old burial sites suggest that wasn’t just a theory but something that happened. i suspect the culture at the time was even more heterogenous than we would think just from that, though it seems like the white skinned types were still the majority considering modern Scandinavians.

How Zionism became a synonym for violence and oppression (www.theguardian.com)

For decades, Joe Biden has proudly declared that he is a Zionist, and he has repeated that claim since Hamas’s 7 October attacks on Israel. But for the student anti-war protests gripping the US, the words “Zionist” and “Zionism” have become a watchword – pejorative and emblematic of the violent state policies driving...

winterayars,

Yeah, like, “how did it get this was”? Well it wasn’t easy, it took a lot of hard work.

winterayars,

I don’t think i care what Jack Dorsey says that isn’t backed up independently. Even if he’s right i just don’t trust him.

winterayars,

The American auto industry could also produce EVs, if it so chose. Nobody has to lose their jobs.

winterayars,

I believe they’re throwing a fit about it right now but we’ll see. They don’t have a lot of room to complain about literal tons of free guns getting shipped to them.

Seinfeld slams woke student audiences: “Back when I dated high school girls, they found me hilarious!” (www.thebeaverton.com)

HOLLYWOOD – With his Netflix comedy film Unfrosted debuting to abysmal reviews, 70-year-old comedian Jerry Seinfeld blames the failure on “extreme left, and PC college campus audiences”, unlike in his heyday, when the teenage girls he dated were fans of his comedy.

winterayars,

People out there like “Okay but if you think about it isn’t taking the red pill humorless and braindead”

winterayars,

XFS. It fills the same role as ext4 but it’s less likely to lose your data and that’s probably the most important part of a file system. Not that ext4 is bad or anything, but XFS is good. The only downside to XFS is you can’t shrink the filesystem size.

winterayars,

All the judges own Apple stock for some reason, so…

winterayars,

My work moved to that model, to get promoted you have to first work at that level for free.

Then, of course, they don’t promote you because you’re already doing the work for them. Why should they?

winterayars,

Love to see the Supreme Court just blatantly ignoring the Constitution.

Apple Removes WhatsApp, Threads, Telegram, and Signal from China App Store, says it complied with orders from the Chinese government (arstechnica.com)

Apple said it complied with orders from the Chinese government to remove the Meta-owned WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China. Apple also removed Telegram and Signal from China....

winterayars,

I’m sure Apple was dragged, kicking their feet and screaming all the way, into banning all the competing services too…

winterayars,

Finally a use for block chain tech.

winterayars,

On the grounds that the dmca is a blank check to let big corporations do whatever the fuck they want. It doesn’t have to be legal, but if you don’t take whatever they want down then that’s illegal and could get you (GitHub, in this case) in serious trouble.

winterayars,

I’m being a little silly. Blockchain stuff wouldn’t work great for hosting git on for a number of reasons. You might be onto something with that idea about integrating it with gir and torrents, though. I was thinking of using it as an external way to verify the repo is the real thing and hasn’t been tampered with but your idea may be a better version of that.

that ain't legal either (lemmy.ml)

transcriptScreenshot of github showing part of the commit message of this commit with this text: Remove the backdoor found in 5.6.0 and 5.6.1 (CVE-2024-3094). While the backdoor was inactive (and thus harmless) without inserting a small trigger code into the build system when the source package was created, it’s good to...

winterayars,

There’s a high likelihood it was Russian or Chinese work tbh. That’s a pretty reasonable take.

winterayars,

Unfortunately, this is one case where the answer really is “human nature”, though that nature may be influenced by experience.

Psychological research into authoritarian personalities shows some people really do have psychological needs (or at least desires) that are met by stupid ass authoritarian power structures. It’s not even, as you may be tempted to suggest, something like desiring power or wanting their team to win over the “enemy”.

If no enemy exists they will create one, they need it. If no hierarchical power structure exists they will create one, and not only so they can be at the top. There are authoritarian followers, too, who will create power structures so they can be at the bottom. (Or at least not at the top, they tend to need people who are below them as much as they need people who are above them.)

But authoritarian personalities tend to want this kind of thing to happen for its own sake and not because of any particular outcome. The authoritarianism is the goal itself. Psychological studies have shown these people will support (or at least not strongly oppose) oppression of while groups of people even when they are a part of the group in question. That is: they’d rather this stuff happen than not, even if it’s happening to them personally.

A good write-up on this aimed at non psychologists is The Authoritarians by Bob Altemeyer: theauthoritarians.org

Written for the Bush era, sadly still relevant today.

winterayars,

So, the psychology research disagrees. While there IS a cultural/social component, there does seem to be a difference in people’s disposition.

The big evidence there can be change is the Milgram experiment, where people who had first hand experience with the Holocaust immediately saw what was going on and refused to take part. That was an aberration, though. People aren’t being forced to confront things on that scale in that way anymore, and even then it didn’t work on everyone.

winterayars,

I have to admit, before Covid i didn’t think people would be joining the war on disease on the side of disease in any meaningful numbers and yet here we are. I think we may be in decline as a civilization, not sure how that kind of brain rot is survivable.
