they couldn't afford a ship, but they all joined the subsector's scout service which was new because of the war with the empire, and the service promised a pause on interest on their debts

they got basically no training, thrown onto a world with known hostile xenomorph-style monsters, got told "ah, that's a different continent don't worry about it just survey your region"

also they got some laser pistols but only one of them has gun combat
