Patterns are algorithmic perceptions

@yaxu@post.lurk.org avatar

@stephenmeyer That's fair, but why not both? :) I think the movement between the two is probably what makes them patterny

@xg @stephenmeyer As a human I am mostly interested in human patterns, but think they only arise through interaction with some kind of notation (or maybe an internalised abstraction) and material. What brings value to this process is the high potential for surprise on the journey from code to perception, because computation is fundamentally unpredictable (despite being deterministic) and material is extremely complex with its own flows of force.

Looking for ideas for places to stay in the South of France early July.. We're taking the train to Lyon, then hiring a car to Gorges du Tarn to camp there for a couple of days, then ...? We'll spend some good time in the alps on the way back but would like to visit somewhere nice and not too by the seas as well.. Maybe the Calanques but seems it gets super busy and often closes in hot weather.

@soundclamp oh that's a top tip, thanks!

The problem with sharing your stuff free/open source, is that it only takes one entitled person to destroy any motivation or joy you have for it. They're super rare but they do come along from time to time.

Does anyone have a use for the sonicpattern.com domain before I let it expire?

FWIW, I once ran a 1-2 hour workshop for tweens to build ultra-simple electric “guitars” with just one string, a piece of lumber, and pickup made of magnet wire wound on a bobbin (using a sewing machine bobbin winder). I think we prepped wire tails on plugs to fit into an amp jack, and the kids had to solder the magnet wire to that. So the low/hacky end of the spectrum of complexity for this project is very low indeed! Might be fun to start with something similar and build complexity from there.

@lea Oh nice, love the idea of that ! someone just linked me to this actually https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ7DZ7HPXck

My son wants to make his own electric guitar as a long term project. I think this might be too big a project to jump into. He's not even particularly keen on the idea of starting with a kit.. Any passing luthiers have advice about an easier step into this world?

yaxu,
@yaxu@post.lurk.org avatar

@gahlord yeah he's 16 and his guitar teacher makes guitars all the time actually!

@yaxu@post.lurk.org avatar

@chrislowis it's about learning really. He's done some making at school and is looking for a fun project

@mdales Top tips thanks a lot, I'm enjoying browsing your blog !

@threedaymonk @chrislowis Thanks Paul! We've just had a look round the local hackspace.. His guitar teacher is a luthier as well so he's going to ask him for advice, hopefully he has a spare neck to start with as well!

@threedaymonk @chrislowis Oh thanks, we're up in Sheffield tho!

What are some nice tracks that have everything hard panned either left or right? Particularly tracks beyond the early stereo era when crazy panning was the default. Orbital's input out is one example but there must be more examples.. People should do this more
