zephyreks,

The hit in the 11-14 demographic is rather concerning. It’s before the big wave of gaokao prep really hits (and thus precedes the job search stress), so it’s a really concerning demographic without a clear root cause.

zephyreks,

The fact that they’re not willing to say anything more specific than “foreign vessel” is actually rather interesting. Usually, the Philippines would be clamouring to get another dig in at China, but either they actually don’t know in this case (lol) or Taiwan/Vietnam are getting into the picture at Scarborough Shoal (and expanding beyond the Spratlys)… if so, the Filipino boat might have just gotten caught in the crossfire.

It could also be retaliation for this, but then I’d imagine Filipino rhetoric should be far more aggressive than it is.

zephyreks,

Imagine giving up the guy that took 15 rounds to pass. Who the fuck do they even have left?

zephyreks,

This is really just an excuse to grab funding for research.

zephyreks,

What a subtle way of saying “are African people stupid?”

zephyreks,

The report itself looks pretty reliable FWIW

Russia facing ‘functional defeat’ in the Black Sea – but Kyiv allies warn they are running out of ammunition (www.independent.co.uk)

Ukraine has achieved the “functional defeat” of Vladimir Putin’s prized Black Sea fleet with intensified attacks in recent weeks, a UK defence minister has suggested – but warned that Western allies are running out of ammunition to help Kyiv repel Russia’s invasion....

zephyreks,

The US is still far ahead of the rest of the West. Whether they’re ahead of China is immaterial to US economic interests because the West is decoupling from China.

zephyreks,

The war has been really bad for the European economy. Turns out, cutting off the main source of cheap power to your main industrial engine isn’t good for the economy. Who woulda thunk?

'They're just meat': Russia deploys punishment battalions in echo of Stalin (www.reuters.com)

Drunk recruits, insubordinate soldiers and convicts are among hundreds of military and civilian offenders pressed into Russian penal units known as "Storm-Z" squads and sent to the frontlines in Ukraine this year. Few live to tell their tale.

zephyreks,

Criminals say they’re unhappy being criminals.

At least Russia’s criminal population isn’t dominated by ethnic minorities.

zephyreks,

It’s at a similar level as Japan.

I’m generalizing here, but Asian cultures don’t like being wrong so it’s far more common for a case to never go to trial than for it to go to trial and end up with an acquittal.

zephyreks,

Surprised that Brazil didn’t abstain since they’re usually anti-intervention

zephyreks,

You want to fight to the last… Ukrainian? How noble of you.

zephyreks,

Yeah so turns out destroying your domestic military industry and outsourcing everything to America and Europe wasn’t the brightest idea, huh?

zephyreks,

Have you been watching General Dynamics promotional videos?

The early stages of the Ukraine war showed that even massive superiority in combined arms is useless because of how asymmetric warfare has become. Your million dollar tank is just as vulnerable to a $500 drone as a twenty thousand dollar Jeep. Your hundred million dollar jet is still going to get shot out of the air in a CAS role by a $10000 missile. The only wars that the West have been able to fight have been against insurgents riding in the back of old Toyota Hiluxes carrying Soviet-era AK-47s.

Modern Western tank doctrine values crew survivability, even at the cost of maintainability and production capacity. It’s the same design principle that the Nazis used to justify the Tiger, Panther, and Konigstiger (mind you, Nazi doctrine also relied heavily on tightly integrated combined arms).

zephyreks,

Not only that, but tanks are still much more survivable than infantry and each tank can replace multiple infantry.

zephyreks,

But… Isn’t that LITERALLY the exact doctrine the Nazis used to design their Tigers and Panthers?

The same tanks that, by the end of the war, were both outclassed and outnumbered by Soviet and American designs?

zephyreks,

If you trust what Congress keeps trying to ram down your throat, China.

zephyreks,

Except… It’s really not? Taiwan’s chip factories are simply leverage to drag the West into any potential conflict between the PRC and ROC. Taiwan’s defence strategy involves being an island in the ocean built up of mountains, jungle, and cities (all terrain where the defender is extremely favoured), mandatory military service for citizens, and being so economically/culturally tied to the mainland that it’s infeasible to break off relations. Taiwan is basically seeking reunification without explicitly seeking reunification: their core defensive strategy relies on being as close to China as possible while being too painful to actually invade.

Of course, this kind of policy didn’t help Cuba, but…

zephyreks,

Cuba ended up getting blockaded because they were too hard to invade lol

Sorry, “quarantined”

Because a blockade would be a declaration of war

zephyreks,

I said “bled,” what did you think I meant? Ukraine isn’t spilling their own blood, but they’re fighting a war they can’t win.

zephyreks,

Ah yes, because a 20-year occupation couldn’t possibly make anything worse.

zephyreks,

So? Doesn’t mean that American occupation of Afghanistan hasn’t delayed their social and economic development by at least two decades (and probably far more).

zephyreks,

Cool! I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info!
