House panel advances Garland contempt after White House blocks access to Biden special counsel tape (apnews.com)

The House Judiciary Committee voted to move forward with an effort to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress hours after the White House blocked access to an audio recording of President Joe Biden’s interview with the special counsel who oversaw an investigation into his handling of classified documents....

Varyk,

I know nothing about this. What is going on?

Is it important in some way?

Varyk,

Oh, got it, thanks

Varyk,

Okay I remember that now, thanks

Varyk, (edited )

I am an adult, and I do like spicy food, but I’d like to throw in that this chip is fine. It’s spicy, but not crazy. It was hot for a few minutes and then not hot.

I’m more surprised that the article affirms that large amounts of capsaicin can be physically damaging in some way. I’ve never heard of that before.

Varyk,

Wow, apparently I do not understand the risks. I actually looked it up after I really started eating spicy food almost everyday and I understood capsaicin to excite nerves but not cause any physical damage.

I am going to have to look that up again I guess.

I think the only thing I came across was it being good for your GI tract somehow, like being good for stopping ulcers.

Varyk,

Currently. It’s gone back and forth a few times, with each 'ban" preceding large purchases by the Chinese government of cryptocurrencies.

But even if it is illegal in China, they can hold the money offshore and spend it as easily as anybody else.

Also, if you are politically connected or pay the government enough money and your behavior doesn’t negatively affect the CCP, then things aren’t actionably illegal in China.

Varyk,

Go on

Varyk,

Hahaha, thank you for explaining, that sounds horrifying.

I still haven’t ever played Minecraft, so I’m unfamiliar with a lot of the popular lore.

“Chicken singularity” was a term that begged for clarification.

The Fantastic Four (1994 360p) (youtu.be)

The Fantastic Four is an unreleased 1994 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The film features the team’s origin and first battle with Doctor Doom. Executive-produced by low-budget specialists Roger Corman and Bernd Eichinger, it was made to allow...

Varyk,

Wow, great find, I just recently heard about this as an unreleased movie from a podcast, but had no idea there were copies floating around. I’m only 10 minutes in, but it’s super weird so far, already pretty fun to watch.

Varyk,

I think that’s why I like corman movies so much, you never think it’s going to be amazing, but they’re always like pretty good, which seems even better in context of the low expectations.

Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense," one customer says (www.cbsnews.com)

Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount....

Varyk,

Five guys is a terrible example, they’ve always been crazy, but even five years ago BK, McDonald’s, Wendy’s had dollar menus with burgers and other substantial food items that poor people could access.

Those prices are suddenly firmly gone, and it happened earlier then and far outpaced even the rampant inflation in the US.

I agree that people shouldn’t be eating that s***** fast food anyway, but a lot of low-income people saw those dollar menus and cheap fast food as lifelines, and within a few years the cheapest items have arbitrarily quadrupled Quinton toppled in price.

There is zero practical reason aside from profit that french fries cost more than they did 5 years ago. Potatoes are just about the easiest thing to grow and there have been no diseases or mitigating circumstances in the past 5 years that explain why someone living on a couple dollars a day can no longer buy a hash brown for a dollar.

Varyk,

I specifically said this is a profit driven problem.

You’re swimming through self-righteous aggression to vehementally agree with me.

Varyk,

I’m good, I dislike half-baked assumptions and lazy springboarding:

“You are framing this as an access issue rather than one of predation”

I specifically say that the problem is profit-driven; in no way is my comment framed as an access issue.

“Fast food chains don’t make a cheap menu to help poor people experience their food, they do it to milk every bit of money from a populace.”

Nobody said that fast food chains are trying to help people; I noted that the problem of increased fast food prices can only be attributed to corporate greed.

“Don’t expect social justice from corporate entities.”

No comment here expects or advocates for social justice from corporate entities. It is a fact that many fast food companies very recently used to have substantial dollar menus and no longer have dollar menus.

Your comment is immaterial as a reply and reads as populist posturing at the expense and disregard of the comment you’re responding to.

If you agree? Fine. If you disagree? Fine.

Don’t agree with what I’m saying by pretending I said something I didn’t to drum up false controversy.

Varyk,

That never stopped, right? Hasn’t the darfur genocide been continuing this whole time?

Varyk,

Wikipedia lists the genocide as ongoing since 2003, although most of the killings occurred from 2003 to 2005; I don’t understand the ethnic killings in darfur to have ever completely stopped.

In 2019 a civilian government came to power, but then there was a military coup in 2023 by many of the same people that perpetrated the genocide in 2003, so it’s starting back up in force, as I understand:

encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/darfur

Varyk,

Yeah. The attacks by the government committing the genocide and rebel groups continued after 2005 and the “treaty”, and while it was still a targeted ethnic genocide, it wasn’t as scaled as those first two years.

Then in 2019, the people revolted got the government back for 2 years, and then in 2021 the military got it back and now the ethnic killing started again in 2023.

The media cycle about the d arfyr genocide was reporting on the genocide for those 2 years, but ethnic killings in darfur never completely stopped for the past 20 years.

9 years later, I finally played fallout 4

Having dropped New Vegas in the past due to lost interest, I decided to try this game out finally since a friend of mine was having a fallout 3 playthrough himself. It was it 8 bucks, so I figured why not. I have to say, I put way more hours into this game than both other Bethesda games I’ve played through (Skyrim and...

Varyk,

It was actually the first fallout game I played, and I’ve replayed it a couple times since then, I really like it.

That’s a great came to play for the first time, especially with qol mods.

Varyk,

I played f3 and 4 next to each other, so it can’t remember exactly which was which, but removing the tint over everything outside was huge, visibility immediately increased, the sky was blue, everything was more aesthetically appealing.

I really liked adding the weather mods in so it rained or snowed, and then textures. I didn’t change too much, but with an improved look and distance, everything felt more fun and immersive.

It sounds like that vivid mod you have did pretty much all of that

Varyk,

There are so many ways american regulatory committees could call foul on this that it just isn’t worth it.

It just wouldn’t be worth trouble and risk of delaying further the export of Chinese EVS.

New Chinese electric vehicles exceeding international safety standards are already less than half as expensive as new American electric vehicles anyway, so even with a 100% tariff on top and whatever other taxes and fees, they’ll still be cheaper than new American EVS.

Varyk,

That’s okay, as long as it’s a real time zone, I think I’m going to try to learn the Buddhist calendar instead of changing it back.

That sounds more fun!

Varyk,

That’s insane. Exactly why I migrated away to linux and Foss.

The Sisters [James Joyce] [Modernist, Avant Garde]

Three nights in succession I had found myself in Great Britain-street at that hour, as if by Providence. Three nights also I had raised my eyes to that lighted square of window and speculated. I seemed to understand that it would occur at night. But in spite of the Providence that had led my feet, and in spite of the reverent...

Varyk,

Thanks for the detailed answer and short story… I had no idea Joyce invented stream of consciousness prose, that’s very intriguing.

I’ll read Araby and see what I see.

Planet of the Humans (2019 1080p) (www.youtube.com)

Planet of the Humans is a 2019 American environmental documentary film written, directed, and produced by Jeff Gibbs. The film examines mainstream environmental groups’ partnerships with billionaires, corporations, and wealthy family foundations in the fight to save the planet....

Varyk,

Not a bad concern that could have made maybe a 20-minute YouTube video, definitely does not require a 2-hour documentary.

It’s also taking the advantages of renewable energy from specific examples at the time that anyone familiar with energy is already aware of and pretending that instantaneous problems are inevitable and perpetual.

It’s kind of like looking at a life jacket and complaining that we’re going to have to create new laws that regulate the construction of Life jackets, and new processes to put out the life jackets, and so we shouldn’t make life jackets.
