This reminds me of the early days when you would goto steam.com only to realize that was not the correct website. I just checked and it seems like steam.com has been taken down but if I remember correctly it was some engineering company. I wonder if they are holding out for more cash from Gaben.
I think they could if they wanted to, I know that some subs actually hide your posts with automod until they get released by the mod team so it stands to reason you could do that on one of the core subs. It wouldn't be fun for the mods and would definitely cause a lot of frustration and issues with people all trying to be the first to post something but then they have to wait 8 hours for a mod to wake up and approve it.
I have been looking at setting up my own kbin instance and the big unknown for me is how much disk space will it use up. I have seen others report in the range of 400-500mb a day. That seems low but it's only going to increase over time and then it becomes a question of data retention, how long do I want keep content 99% of which I may never look at again.
This place has roughly 3,000 people and was intended to be an entire replacement for DaystromInstitute and StarTrek as they were going dark indefinitely. Well, within 4 days the moderators have walked back those statements and opened both subreddits up. I see no incentive for people to come to this website now and while a few...
I think they bring up a good point and just like Reddit isn't going to die overnight, Lemmy and the like are not going to see widespread adoption until the product matures.
Interesting read. I get where he's coming from vis a vis training data for LLMs. But if those are the problem, negotiate a solution with those companies or block their crawlers. Don't kill the apps making the site usable for everyone else....
It does seem like a silly complaint. I get it's hard for people who were used to car talk every weekend but at some point it gets stale and you move on. I'm sure there is a way to play them via streaming if you want to.
Huffman said in an interview that he plans to institute rules changes that would allow Reddit users to vote out moderators who have overseen the protest, comparing them to a “landed gentry.”
Don't you think that $20 an hour is really undervalued. Maybe if the job was literally just banning spammers and trolls but it's more than that for most subs, especially the smaller ones.
I haved used the heroic launcher to play games from GOG and the Epic stores without too much fuss. I even got a pirated game to play after I used a windows vm to run the extraction/unpack tool.
How many of you have tried using SearXNG? It's a meta search engine that pull data from a number of sources before ranking and displaying them. I really like the cached feature that tries to load the internet archive copy of the page.

Reddit is just the plaything of anonymous billionaires that's the whole reason they want the IPO at all costs because they can't cash out without it, even if it is less than they had hoped for.

The Steam subreddit has been forced back open.
Looks like Reddit is forcing another sub open, but there are users advocating changing the sub to be about actual steam.
