Yeah, Google has been weirdly tolerant of NewPipe and other YT-scraping apps for a while. I wonder what changed.

I feel like using this for the sake of posting pictures to Lemmy would just clog up Pixelfed instances with things not even meant for them. Pixelfed is a community, not really an "image host", even though it technically has that capacity,.

I could never get into traditional fighting games, but damn do they get some fun cross-overs.

Reminds me of a white version of the soldiers in Equilibrium. I dig it.

Defederation, Threads and You

A lot of us are pretty new to the fediverse and we've arrived just in time to grapple with what is easily the biggest federation/defederation controversy ever to hit it. I've put this thread together to hopefully help communicate some of the more complex ideas that we're trying to get our heads around....

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

On some level, it's probably not that important that people understand all this stuff

Maybe not the average user. But the ones who are very vocal with their outrage should definitely have an understanding of what these processes actually entail. Thanks for taking the time to write this, I hope people actually take the time to read and understand!

Should we be using hashtags and mentions more?

Edited below. I imagine many of us are here from reddit, where hashtags weren't really a thing and in many places mentions were actively discouraged (/r/politics I'm looking at you). However, since everything we post or comment on kbin (and lemmy) has the potential of getting federated on a mastodon server, which leans heavily...

I believe that anything submitted to a magazine basically has an automatic hashtag for that magazine's name, which is then searchable on Mastodon.

What are up votes (uplemmies?) actually for?

Obviously, most social networks have some sort of engagement button for liking/up voting/promoting a piece of content. As well as helping users feel like they’re participating, rather than just passively consuming, most networks also use the likes/ups to filter or promote content to other users....

Kbin labels it as "Reputation points", and your profile shows up with 1815 points to me. Not sure what that tells you as far as the numbers you've been tracking so far.

I get why people choose to use tools like this, but I'm personally against SponsorBlock. Sponsors usually pay the content creator a LOT better than YouTube does, and the deals they offer to content creators can go up or down depending on the retention rate during the sponsored segments of previous videos.

That said, I still manually skip sponsored segments in anything I watch, usually. I'm not gonna pretend to be all high and mighty and act like I sit through every ad and that you should, too. But I'd rather do it manually, so that I can at the very least think about how bad I should feel for ruining their metrics. And also so that if they're a short one that I don't mind sitting through, or if I've stepped away from my screen while the video's playing, that they still get their playback metrics for the ad.

Now what is Google going to do with YouTube?

Hopefully keep Phil Harrison far, far away from it.

NSFW content in /m/random keeps showing up in the "Random Threads" and "Random Posts" boxes on the front page's sidebar, unblurred, even with the magazine blocked

Was talking to my boss about the Fediverse today, and recommended Kbin as a good starting point. Seeing some big ole anime boobies on the front page definitely made it a bit awkward....

Chozo,

I do now, which unfortunately hides the NSFW content I do want to be able to easily see.

Chozo,

Ah, dang! Well, good to know it's at least got a tracker already.

Just trying to understand how the microblog function works in Kbin. When it asks to select a magazine to post to, is that basically the same as adding a hashtag to a toot as if I were posting on a Mastodon instance?

Also, if I post a microblog to a remote community (such as to a lemmy.world community), how does that show up on LemmyWorld? Also, how does that show up on a Mastodon instance?

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

It happens to me from time to time. I think it's just that you happened to click the button while the server had a hiccup. Usually I can press Back and click the vote again, and it registers.

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

You likely won't be able to. Most Lemmy apps are currently incompatible with Kbin, because Kbin is technically not Lemmy; it's its own thing, which happens to be largely compatible with Lemmy. Because of that, it doesn't work exactly the same, and requires special development to function in apps.

Kbin also doesn't have an API yet. Artemis, a Kbin app currently in development, is having to use a data scraping method at the moment due to the lack of an API, though that will be corrected once an API is available.

I kind of wish this could be a built-in function of Lemmy. That would make sharing multi-communities across instances a lot easier, too.

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

I think it's pretty clear, by removing the ability to moderate NSFW content from their mobile app, that they're trying to phase NSFW content off their platform completely. They're going to slowly make it more and more difficult to post/browse anything NSFW on the site, until they announce an outright ban on it.

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

I've been minimizing my use as much as possible. I haven't quit completely because there's still a few communities I want to keep up with that aren't moving to any other platforms yet. Some of them are too small to care, or too large to viably move to another site without fracturing the community.

Twitter traffic is 'tanking' as Meta's Threads hits 100 million users (www.cnbc.com)

Meta’s new text-based social app Threads has quickly gained 100 million users since launching last week, which appears to be negatively impacting traffic on Twitter. According to web analytics, Twitter traffic declined 5-11% over the first two days Threads was available compared to the previous week. Threads was able to grow...

Chozo avatar

I don't think anybody's saying there's anything wrong with using Instagram accounts as the base to access the platform. It'll become federated soon, so that won't be a requirement for long.

The issue that some people take, myself included, is that those aren't really "new" users, so calling it "growth" is disingenuous. They're already Instagram users. It effectively makes Threads just Instagram+. Not that that's inherently a bad thing, but it's not really "organic growth" as Zuck is calling it. There's nothing to "grow" if the user base already existed in the first place; it's just the same user base having access to a new feature.

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

Right, but that's a much different metric than the way Meta's been selling it. Meta would have you believe that millions of new users joined their platform for the first time specifically for Threads, which in actuality that number is likely much, much smaller.

I'm just being pedantic, though.

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

I've seen some reports of people finding shadow profiles on Threads for users that they know have not yet activated a Threads account. It seems like it's suggesting people based on your Instagram follows. No idea if those are being included in any user counts Meta's published, though.

This looks really interesting! Do you know of any concerning limitations of the free version anyone should be aware of?

Is kbin vulnerable to the same kind of Javascript insertion attack as Lemmy was recently?

Chozo,
Chozo avatar

@ZILtoid1991 I don't believe so. The exploit involved stealing cookies via the renderer used for custom emojis, which not every Lemmy instance has. I don't believe Kbin has any such features in place, so while it's possible for the exploit to still somehow happen here, it wouldn't be in the exact same way, at the very least.
