Spanish guy, who likes open source software and has just discovered the fediverse (as of 28th of April, 2022). I like video games, and indie and retro music. I’m a student. I’m officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD since January, 2023.

The only thing I used reddit for was to lurk, see photos, upvote and read some comments or posts. I was barely active during this couple of years with a new account, after deleting an old one. Sometimes I saw it, and still see it, difficult for me to be active because of karma, some kind of polarization or toxicity, even on safe subreddits.

The good thing is that here, karma is non existent. Yes, you can upvote or downvote posts and comments, but those votes don't go to you as karma, so you're not affected. And that really helps neurodivergent people, as it's my case too (rejection sensitive dysphoria, I think it's called, one comorbidity of ADHD).

So, yes, fuck Reddit, and I'll stay here as long as it lasts.

Now I finally understand everything! So, there are two reddit alternatives inside the fediverse. One is Lemmy, with all its instances and communities inside then. The other one is Kbin, with 5 instances so far but lots of magazines and activity too. And both of them can interact with each other, and with other fediverse services.

Showing active monthly users (which is quite low) in data for servers is creating a barrier for entry to Lemmy

I've noticed this in many places in the Lemmyverse in my first few days here. When first signing up almost all the instances were listed as having 2 or less active users. The biggest was Lemmy.ml at something around 1000. Then I've seen those numbers listed in other places including a post yesterday that is supposed to help...

What if those graphs or tables show an estimated average of monthly activity, like "X number of users were active on the 1st day and posted Y publications, same thing on 2nd day, etc.", and show that average? That's better than absolute numbers in a single day, or data that says nothing relevant.

There are some mastodon accounts/bots that update statistics about mastodon everyday. It would be awesome to do the same thing about lemmy on regular basis, like once per week or month. Awesome.

I hope that too. But an always barking dog (aka Putin) sometimes can bite. In other words, all those threats about nuking some land eventually can become true. Let's see if someone will get rid of Putin before that scenario, and Ukrainians can live in peace from Lviv to Donetsk (including Crimea).

I'm neurodivergent (mainly ADHD), and because of that I'm not able to perform boring tasks because I prefer to play video games and browse the web. One alternative I'm considering is to get rid of the graphical environment and live (almost) exclusively in a tty environment, so I can avoid any useless distraction and start performing boring tasks with no excuses.

But I have two doubts about that:

  1. How far can I go within a tty environment? The web can be distracting, but also necessary.

  2. I don't want to change my distribution unless it's necessary, so can I uninstall gnome/plasma/lxqt...? I'm using Lubuntu.
