Spanish guy, who likes open source software and has just discovered the fediverse (as of 28th of April, 2022). I like video games, and indie and retro music. I’m a student. I’m officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD since January, 2023.

America is a continent and Americans are people from that continent (Canadians, Usonians, Mexicans, Cubans, Argentinians, Brazilians...)

This is the moment for lemmy. The big issue this system had was it's viability. It was tiny. Like you'd look around at dead instances proudly reporting their double digit monthly user count with several day old threads and no comments.

I know I've taken a look at lemmy for a few times and decided not to take the plunge because while I wanted a smaller alternative to reddit, it was too small. We're at a point now where things are active enough to draw in a stream of content and the snowball rolling downhill will eventually grow into an avalanche.

I dont think a federated open source reddit alternative is going to reach the hundreds of millions of users reddit got, but that doesnt matter. What matters is there's enough people around to sustain a decent community.

DAE dislike the term "neurodivergent" as applied to ADHD?

Disclaimer: I have no quarrel with the mods using the term in the creation of this community. I understand why they chose it, as even if they share my disagreement with the term when applied to ADHD, there's not really a better inclusive term. "Mental illness" is really the only other option, and naming a community that would...

mobiuscoffee,

You can do some pretty cool customization, but I have no idea how. I came across this lemmy instance that looks like an old phpBB forum:

How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...

Really good, there's so much positive energy and people asking all kinds of questions without being called names, it's very enjoyable overall.

AineLasagna,

I’m sorry - we had to remove your post because you didn’t choose the correct flair out of a possible 3,000 esoteric choices, you didn’t format your post title according to the instructions located on a stone carving in the British Museum, your image had an even number of pixels, and/or you haven’t provided verification pics, a notarized letter, and three character references to our mod team. Please do not try again and have a good day [this action was performed by a bot]

Especially the lemmy.ml part was kind of terrible, I got into some weird argument with Tiananmen Square massacre deniers and the mods started deleting my comments, so the whole discussion was meaningless and left me very worried for the future of this corner of the fediverse.

orbit,

While I'm subbed to a few lemmy.ml communities I didn't wanna make an account over there for the same reasons. The general inclination is a bit out of my sphere.

Woodyboye,

I kinda feel the same. On reddit I find myself deleting the comments before Id make them most of the time. Most people seem fine here, and I feel a lot more comfortable.

I even feel myself more active and engaged here, on Reddit I'm in lurking mode most of the time.

That's my favorite part. It feels like there's more interaction with people here.

Currently, it seems unlikely. You've got Beehaw, Lemmy.ml, Sopuli, and Lemmygrad as your largest instances currently so we're already seeing significant decentralization. Even in the last few days I've noticed a bunch of tiny instances popping up. As time goes on, people gravitate towards the big servers, but even a handful of big servers is better than the monoliths of Reddit and Twitter.

No matter how bad you think Elon Musk is, how bad Twitter is under his purview, it's worse.

I have to hope that main instances will stop federating Lemmygrad at some point. There's no place, IMO, for genocide denial/affirmation and authoritarian extremism on platforms like these. Or any platforms.

Edit: Seems this is unfortunately unlikely as the lemmy.ml instance appears to be moderated by a genocide denier and authoritarian.

What game is improved the most by mods?

I know most of the Bethesda RPGs have massive mod support, and there's games like Minecraft that have more mods than anyone can imagine. I would consider those games pretty playable in their vanilla states. Would you say there are any games that were "saved" by modding? Or that are still kept alive by thriving modding...

simple,

The original Doom for sure. I don't know if they count as mods since they're technically running on a modified version of the engine, but there is still a massive community making maps, mods, and even new game modes for it. Most recently the "MyHouse.wad" map for it has exploded in popularity. I've had so much fun over the years with doom mods, it's a treasure trove that most people have no idea exists.

There's even entire new games built on Doom. Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart (stupid name, I know) is a fantastic free open source karting game with a decent community, and it's technically just a doom mod.

If anyone here is going to play a single doom mod to see what's up, I recommend Doom: The Golden Souls Remastered. It's good fun.
