Add to Home Screen + kbin is 🤌, all I need is a back button or the ability to swipe back and I’m golden.

Love Collective Soul and Rage Against the Machine. I’ve got a few:

  • Big Data - 3.0. Great story exploring AI ethics before it was hype.
  • Panic! At the Disco - A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. I wish I got the alternate timeline where the band continued this direction rather than going for pop. So much chaotic good energy.
  • The Donnas - Spend the Night. This one is just plain fun.
  • The Beatles - Let it Be. Two of Us is my favorite on this one, but every song can stand up on its own.

I definitely have this feeling too. I’m finding that memes and other picture-based posts are a little easier for me to start with because they do some of the talking for me.

Yes! I’ve really been missing message boards lately. I didn’t think I’d get to feel that joy again, and here we are! Just gotta keep the momentum going.

This is where I’m at too. Reddit is my last non-Fediverse social media account, and I already had some reservations about keeping it. I don’t think I’m ready to delete it just yet, unlike FB/Twitter/Instagram.

Come to think of it, I’m surprised I didn’t learn my lesson with centralization when AIM died. I just accepted it as a natural part of the tech lifecycle and found a different centralized service. But seeing the decisions and actions of these companies over the past few years - platforms I trusted - hit differently, and hit even harder when I went to look for forums and RSS and realized my backup options were dying. You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone, or pretty close to being gone. It definitely makes me want to support federation and indie web efforts - it’s much closer in spirit to the web I grew up with.

Yes! I’m realizing how much I took that for granted when social media came on the scene. Not anymore. I’m not letting this version of the internet die out if we have the chance to bring that energy back.

14 miles for me during a vacation to either New York City or London - I can’t remember which one broke the record. I usually do at least one full day of exploring on foot every time I go to a city. I’m usually completely destroyed the next day because I don’t normally run or walk long distances, but it’s so worth it.

The API price hike was the push I needed - I’d already been considering leaving since Reddit was my last mainstream social media account. There’s definitely more activity here than I saw before, enough that so far, I’m able to get the main things I was enjoying Reddit for just fine here. I am going to make it a point to participate more here than I did Reddit though so I can be part of the change I want to see.

I’m not sure when, if at all, I’ll be ready to delete my Reddit account. If Apollo stops working, I won’t really use it anymore. But it’s definitely going to be on a back burner for me from now on at minimum.

a vegan and vegetarian thread

i'm sure with the influx of people we have enough of a community for this to be a thread, or at least people who are interested in veganism and vegetarianism and incorporating aspects of the diet/lifestyle into their current life. so yeah, pop off! share your struggles, experiences, good times, recipes, all that kind of stuff

I’m vegan! The only egg I can’t find a suitable substitution for is a sunny side up egg, but honestly, the only good part of that was the yolk and there are recipes out there for that. JUST Egg makes for an awesome scramble or breakfast sandwich, I pretty much use flax eggs exclusively in baking for moisture/light binding needs, and aquafaba works perfectly for meringues, mousse, and mayonnaise. I’ve also been to some restaurants that make a mean tofu scramble. I was pretty skeptical, but they’ve really grown on me.

There is definitely a gap with regards to cheese. Now that I’m used to vegan cheese, it’s not so bad, but texture-wise, vegan cheese still has a ways to go. I think we’re close to getting there though between what Miyoko’s is doing, Violife, and the animal-free milk protein Perfect Day has. I’ve tried both Brave Robot ice cream and Modern Kitchen cream cheese and they are nearly indistinguishable from traditional dairy. A couple of milks with this protein have popped up but I haven’t been able to find them in a store. The minute I can get my hands on one, the first thing I’m going to try to make is a mozzarella.

Anyway, if you have any specific things you’ve had a tough time replicating regarding eggs, I’m happy to give you any tips I have! It took me a while to switch, but now that I know the substitutes it’s pretty easy. 😁

I’m so jealous of your vegan junk food options across the pond! I heard you got vegan Krispy Kremes which were my absolute favorite before going vegan 😭

Starting small and building up is a totally valid way to get to your goals if your eventual goal is veganism or vegetarianism. It took me a while to get all my old recipes converted over, but it was definitely worth it to me.

Wait, where? What brands? I’ve managed to find Modern Kitchen cream cheese, which is absolutely on point and tasted exactly like dairy cream cheese to me, but I haven’t seen anything like a cheddar or mozzarella yet and I’m dying to try one.

Vegan since COVID here and vegetarian for quite a while before that. I don’t have much to report except that I would love to be a part of a vegan/vegetarian (whatever subreddits are called here, kbin calls them magazines).

Also, I’ve really been enjoying making Ethiopian food lately. Niter Kibbeh is pretty easy to make vegan (sub canola oil for butter), and I just throw all the spices and oil in the slow cooker for a few hours. Once you have that, it’s a lot easier to make everything else and it’s so tasty. Just need to get myself some teff so I can try making proper injera!

AI image generation aside, this sort of thing might be genuinely useful for someone who is blind or low vision. It’s like alt text for the world.
