Mozilla shutting down Pocket app for Mac, recommends installing iOS app — 9to5Mac (apple.news)

Mozilla has announced today that its read-it-later service Pocket will be retiring its Mac app this month. Users are encouraged to install the iOS app on their Mac or use the web going forward. Here’s when and why Mozilla is shutting it down.

Wait, people actually use Pocket? When they made it part of Firefox, that was the last straw for me to switch completely to Pale Moon.

NotTheOnlyGamer,

Huh. If it's running on a new engine, do you think John Romero could remaster Daikatana on the new engine?

NotTheOnlyGamer,
NotTheOnlyGamer avatar

I do find that interesting - but the status site doesn't list API requests; and they don't have any diagnosis yet. I wonder if this is come kind of DOS.

NotTheOnlyGamer,
NotTheOnlyGamer avatar

Well, that's an interesting development. I hope Capcom takes notice of this.

I wonder how this will impact their profits; or if it will. With GDPR, a lot of American businesses shut off access from EU country IPs, and refused access to anyone who represented themselves as a citizen of an EU nation. Facebook, Instagram, and Threads may be the next services to go dark in Europe, if the money just isn't there.

Since they adopted Blink as their browser engine, I just assume that M$ is going to eventually get absorbed into Alphabet in a few years.

NotTheOnlyGamer,
NotTheOnlyGamer avatar

I really hope you're right, but I'm still scared.

NotTheOnlyGamer,

So Blink as the Edge engine is the Embrace phase, and then they can try to Extend via Office Online & Bing?

NotTheOnlyGamer,
NotTheOnlyGamer avatar

Drugs can do that to a person.

After the 2-day blackout, I went back to using it as normal. Now, I usually have two tabs open; one for kbin, one for Reddit. On my phone, I have the Reddit app, and while it's heavier than RedReader, it works well enough. I just make sure to tap every ad I see, to drive up the advertisers' costs and help to drop campaign conversion.

What are some creative ways for a GM to deal with narrative for when players are not able to attend a session?

Hey all, my friend is starting a new game. We have some newbies joining and their attendance maybe hit and miss, with work schedules and life. What are some creative ways your groups have managed missing players outside of someone paying for them one session?

The way I've handled it over the years is to run the campaign episodically and keep the party consistently on the move. Think Star Trek, Kung Fu, Power Rangers, etc. Essentially, build up the plot gradually, but have each "episode" focus on the characters who are there and able to act. Focus on the characters present in the episode; then have the others get filled in as they swap in and out. Obviously you can do callbacks, but you don't need to have everyone in every game that way. Heck, you can call back to things a character wasn't present for so that they learn about the event diegetically.

Is there any Owncast host that's similar to YouTube or Twitch in terms of relative painlessness? If it requires each person host their own caster instance, it's not going to gain wide adoption.

Never played ToF2, only ToF one from F-Droid. It definitely scratches the "Advance Wars" itch for me.

Two of my favorite movies - and I'd add eXistenZ to the list, along with 13th Floor and Matrix.

Maybe human civilization is only meant to exist until fossil fuels are depleted?

Dumping money/metal into the oceans cannot be made profitable. Even if it can, there's always going to be a more profitable use for that material.

NotTheOnlyGamer,

Profit above all else is how the world has worked for centuries. You're right it's what brought us where we are. We have an increasing ceiling of education, the greatest overall mobility (socially and spatially), vast swathes of entertainment and communication, at least outside of some nations where there's a major problem politically and socially. People are not going to give up that comfortable society they've become accustomed to. Unless you can make this change immediately profitable, which is unlike most change, people are not going to accept it.

Fossil fuels gave us the technology to get where we are today. We have overcome natural limits for centuries. I believe we can continue to do that.

Corn growth and other subsidies are profitable to the government, because the money comes back to them in lobbying/bribery.

Is it just me, or between the situation with Twitter, Reddit still being a trash fire if you look in the right places, and Threads just not really being great at viral engagement, is there just a huge wave of social media ennui and exhaustion?

I would easily believe it's just me. But every time I look at social media lately, I'm not seeing a lot of enthusiasm or mass engagement.

The amount of Excel/spreadsheets I use in my hobbies and "leisure" time is massive. Otherwise, it's mostly about having surrendered to the presence of online ads.

"OK", said the nerds.

Also top tip, libraries love when you play RPGs there and will help you advertise.

NotTheOnlyGamer,

@Homebrewandhacking That depends on your library - my local one does not. The funding cuts have really hurt their hours and the staffing.

What archetypes are y'all currently playing? I was on superheavy before the latest ban list (RIP) and now I've moved to Mannadium until I get my VS cards in the mail. Mannadium is crazy, as it can bring out like 4 level 10 synchros and set a back row Omni negate. VS is just a very well designed archetype that doesn't spit out generic negates.

I'd love to hear what strategies y'all are messing around with though.

NotTheOnlyGamer,

@brandacus I've just gotten back to Duel Links, and my current go-to there is Blue-Eyes, but I'm not at high-level play yet (I'm a bit slowed down by DSOD Stage 6 - haven't touched the other worlds yet after unlocking the protags). So far, Blue-Eyes seems to be a good mid-high deck, and I've got enough consistency that it's been fun.

In Omega, I'm playing around with Ice Barrier, but I'm thinking I should try Duelingbook to get a better handle on it. I like the field & play control, and the way it slows the pace of the game back down. I will admit, when Mystic Mine was in play, I considered it essential to any gameplay, along with Level Limit Area B and other lockdown tech.
