QualifiedKitten,

I use the PetSafe automatic box, but instead of the proprietary trays, I picked up a "Forever Tray" and you can then use any non-clumping crystal litter.

The biggest challenge I've had with it is that it turns into a big mess if your cat ever has soft poos, and one of my cats has IBS, so that happens more often than I'd like.

How old is your cat? How set in their ways are they? My cats have taken to the automatic box without any trouble, but my friend's cat completely lost his mind when she introduced the Litter Robot and he started peeing on laundry, etc. instead. She ended up getting rid of it, and 6 months later, he's still afraid to go in the room where the Litter Robot was.

QualifiedKitten,

To be on the safe side with whatever automatic box you end up buying, I suggest leaving it unplugged for a few days while she gets used to the new box & litter. Once she's using the box consistently, plug it in and press the button to manually run the rake when she's nearby to see/hear it. If she seems stressed by it, unplug it and stick to manually running the rake until she's no longer stressed by it.

QualifiedKitten,

Oh! And as much as I hate cleaning up after those soft poos, I would never get one of the automatic boxes that totally disposes of the waste via toilet or whatever.

  1. Unusual eliminations are often the first sign that your cat isn't feeling well. If you never see their poo, you might miss the early signs that they need to see a vet.

  2. Sewage (and commercial composting) treatment processes in many cities are not designed to handle the microbes found in cat (and dog) poop, so their waste products should not go down the toilet or into your green waste bin unless you confirm that your city's processes are equiped to properly treat it.

How is it fine for pirates to pay for a VPN to not pay for a service?

I only use free VPN extensions or apps and I fully aware of the limitation of this. I use shabby ones, which don’t protect and probably sell my data. It slow and I can’t have only a few location. But I can’t get around the idea that people can pay for a service to refuse to pay to a service. Please help me understand.

QualifiedKitten,

I pay $15/month for a seedbox because I prefer the overall experience compared to Netflix, etc. My parents have given me their login details for the services they subscribe to, and every so often, I check them out, but end up going back to my seedbox + Plex setup. Some of the reasons I prefer my piracy-based setup:

  • I often set up a queue/playlist of shows, not necessarily all from the same series. As far as I'm aware, the streaming services let you do that.

  • My shows never pause to ask me if I'm still watching.

  • I can access an unlimited library of content without switching apps.

  • Content won't become unavailable if I try to access it from a different country or totally disappear when a contract expires.

  • Some episodes of some shows have been edited/censored, or removed completely, from whatever streaming service hosts it, but those episodes are available in their original form via torrents.

QualifiedKitten,

Ha! I had to zoom in to make sure you hadn't stolen my cats! I also have a short-haired SIC (standard issue cat, AKA brown tabby) and a long haired void, and this looks a lot like a situation I'd catch them in, even the same positions.

QualifiedKitten,

I have an entire album just full of his unique deuce faces and positions, but this one's definitely the cutest.

QualifiedKitten,

Guess I'm getting old. I've been using a Pixel/Nexus since the Nexus 5. Everytime I've set up a new phone over the past few years, gestures is the default, so I try it very briefly (hours?) before I get frustrated and look up how to get the nav bar buttons back. Wish I could also disable immersive mode (auto hide nav bar) in certain apps, but last time I searched, the only possible solutions I found seemed a bit sketchy.

List Open Source Workout Trackers you use here.

Does anyone here use any Open-Source Workout Trackers? I’ve been using hevy, but their high fees, the fact that they are a company that holds my health data and has made no commitments to open source, User privacy, or fair trade practices like user data import/export has me looking around. I wanted to see if anyone had...

QualifiedKitten,

Not open source, but I like Simple Workout Log. I've been using it for years, and I don't think it's ever even asked me to create an account, although it looks like that is an option, but they do have a plain import/export option too. It's ad supported, or you can pay $5 to remove ads.

QualifiedKitten,

That was such an unreal story that I wondered if I was on some sort of satire site!

QualifiedKitten,

How old are they? They look so young to be separated from momma.

QualifiedKitten,

Oh man! I'd be rather cranky with my organization if they knowingly separated kittens from mom that young, but sometimes we just have to make the best of the situation. Glad they're in good hands!

It's crazy just how quickly they can crash. The last one that crashed on me went from perfectly fine to almost euthanized in less than 8 hours, but somehow she pulled through. Hope your little guy pulls through.

My current batch is getting ready for "graduation" and they've been with me since they were about 5 days old, found with no mom. They've each tried to die on me at different points, but somehow all pulled through. They're getting spayed/neutered on Monday, and will likely be heading off to their new families by the following weekend.

QualifiedKitten,

Ahh, okay. The way I read it, it sounded like they had been separated from mom just because she's feral, but if she's not feeding them, it doesn't sound like keeping them together is a good plan.

Aww, poor little guy! Hope you're doing alright. I know it can be real tough to lose them.

QualifiedKitten,

Nah, I totally get it. I've only lost one so far, but that was enough for me to realize that I can handle the loss, maybe too well.

QualifiedKitten,

I hope not! Haha. From my understanding of how blocking someone works here, you won't see this if you've blocked me, but I'll still see anything you've posted.

QualifiedKitten,

I used to drive a lot, and other than traffic, I enjoyed it, especially when I had a fun little manual. I live in the middle of a city with decent public transportation now, and with all the traffic, driving is only enjoyable if I'm leaving the city. I no longer even own a car, so when I do drive, it's an unfamiliar vehicle and unfamiliar roads, so the first few hours are pretty stressful. I've been considering owning a car again, but I'm fantasizing that full self driving will be a thing by then. Lol.

QualifiedKitten,

Aww, so precious! I'm a sucker for tabbies, and fostering is so rewarding!

I'd love to connect with other animal foster parents to discuss the ups and downs of fostering, and have created a community at kbin.social/m/fosteranimals

QualifiedKitten,

Last time I tried Linux was about 10 years ago. I installed multiple different combinations until I found one I liked (I forget which though). I was attending university at the time (chemistry) and had it dual booting so I could switch back to Windows as needed. I really tried, but everything on the Linux side was just so buggy or complicated.
I was using Open Office or something similar, mainly for spreadsheets, and I just kept needing to switch back to Windows so I could spend my time getting the actual work done, rather than trying to figure out how to make the computer work. It was so long ago that I don't remember the details, but I vaguely remember it repeatedly freezing up on me for relatively simple spreadsheet tasks.. the kind of stuff they teach in beginners or maaaaybe intermediate Excel tutorials with 10-50 rows of data.
Eventually, I gave up on trying to do any of my work in Linux and figured I'd come back to it when I had some free time. When I finally had some free time, I decided to wipe the current Linux install and try something else. I had gone through the installation process so many times before that I thought I remembered the steps. Well, I didn't, and I managed to delete something super critical and couldn't even boot to Windows anymore. After much trial and error, some kind internet stranger offered to help walk me through it.. the only problem was that they were only familiar with Arch (?), so that was the distro we were going to use to get me back up and running. We got it fixed so that my computer dual boots, but I have to supervise the boot process every time since the default boot is Arch, and I'm just not ready to deal with that.
I've casually looked a few times to see if I can figure out how to change the boot order, but I'm too scared I'll end up worse off, so I've just left well enough alone since then.

I have an Android phone and rooting it is always the first thing I do, so it hasn't scared me off tinkering altogether, but I hardly touch a PC outside of work anymore, so there's just no motivation to try again.

QualifiedKitten,

I've been fostering kittens for about 2 years now, but this is my first experience with true bottle babies. Immediately prior to this, I was fostering a mom + 5 kittens when the shelter asked me to see if she would take in 2 orphans who were not thriving, so I had a very brief experience with bottle feeding while introducing them to mom.

All three of these cuties have tried to die on me and required emergency veterinary care, including tube feeding, each at different times, but they're making it through now, and are handling the weaning process really well.

The black one up front has been especially slow to gain weight (average of 7g/day) but seems to be catching up now that she's eating wet food. I'm super relieved to be able to sleep for more than an hour or two at a time now, but will definitely foster bottle babies again.

QualifiedKitten,

He says, "mrrrew", then purrrrrrs.

QualifiedKitten,

It's possible, but I think in reality, he really just knows how to play the part to get what he wants in the moment. He can be pretty smart when it serves him.

QualifiedKitten,

Ha! If you saw how much he eats, you'd know he's never empty. But then, if you saw how much he still begs for more food, you might be right back at square one. Lol.
