After weeks of burning through users’ goodwill, Reddit is facing a moderator strike and an exodus of its most important users. It’s the latest example of a social media site making a critical mistake: users aren’t there for the services, they’re there for the community. Building barriers to access...
I really liked the article that I hadn't read before on Enshittification by Cory Doctorow from January linked from the EFF article, which really well captures the inevitability of what's happening to Reddit (and the value of the Fediverse):
This is enshittification: surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shit.
I always thought it was a pretty smart idea on Reddit's side to have the posts and comments be automatically upvoted by their author, saving them the tough choice between playing fair or boosting their initial reach a little; and if you had particularly low self-esteem, this enabled you to reduce your own points by not one, but...
I've made a poll so we can decide. We could then add the most popular suggestion to the Codeberg repo. I'm personally leaning towards no self upvoting.
I don't think it matters if users upvote their own stuff or not, however I don't think users should be given the choice. It should either be users always upvote their own stuff, or users can't upvote their own stuff.
Upvoting myself feels weird, but it feels like something I might have to do to help my posts gain traction, especially if everyone else is gonna do it. Reddit had it right, should just be the default.
On desktop, click "Settings > show top bar (on)" to get a navbar at the top of the page that lets you easily sort between the default home feed, magazines you are subscribed to, and a list of random magazines to check out :)
You can also open the sidebar (three lines next to the kbin logo at the top) then scroll down to where it says the magazine name, the subscribe button is directly below it.
A certain stage of development has ended - a prototype was created that allowed me to verify whether such a form makes sense in the #fediverse. Until now, it was a project that I developed in my free time. Now, thanks to the great people from Nlnet, I will be able to devote much more time to it. This time, we have already...

How do you feel about people upvoting their own posts?

Handy UI tip for former Reddit users

While trying to wrap my head around the concept of the Fediverse, I made this map. How did I do?
