Just wonking about on the internet... oh look, a bee.

Could you please report this on Codeberg. I've got a sneaking suspicion is been fixed already but better to be sure.

Imgur links suck

Most Fediverse software supports image uploads, so there's no reason to use Imgur for image hosting. Hell, even on my small single-user server (atomicpoet.org), image hosting is easy peasy. Not only is Imgur not needed, they're an annoyance for those of us who are used to seeing images natively on the Fediverse....

Does Lemmy not let you just attach them to your post?

VerifiablyMrWonka,
VerifiablyMrWonka avatar

Oh yeah. But I click a button like that and my image is uploaded to the instance (KBin)

PS. Can't see that image as Imgur blocks my VPN.

Imgur doesn't work with vpns. To view your meme post I have to got through steps to disable either my work or private VPNs. At this point the end result is I just don't bother.

Imgur block commercial IP ranges so KBin is unable to fetch, process and cache the thumbnail.

VerifiablyMrWonka,

Not strictly true. Mastodon, pixelfed, KBin all cache images.

lemmy.ml is no longer shadowbanning kbin. (lemmy.ml)

Apparently one of the lemmy.ml admins was overzealous in banning all User-Agent strings that contained the word "bot". Bans were entered for all of the individual strings containing that word which were observed in their webserver logs, which impacted kbin's reported agent of "kbinBot"....

Love this video. Had me properly chuckling at points.

Yeah. PHP is not a speed limiting factor unless you're calculating Pi to X million digits. Almost everything about ActivityPub is limited by network IO.

When you login initially it offers to follow all your Instagram follows. Even if they've never logged in. Its creating shadow accounts for all of them.

When they login initially they find they already have a bunch of followers.

So it's not all of Instagram. It's just all the people who've tried it + all the people they tried to follow.

OC Assuming boost stays as some sort of a super-upvote/share combo alongside regular up/downvote buttons, here's a UI idea on how to merge it into one unified voting system. App animation + web block mockup

I heard that votes have been changed to behave closer to how people would expect, and boost is staying here as well. So I had an idea how to bring it all together in the interface....

I like the overal effect but it's hiding the true nature of boosting.

Boosting shares a piece of content with your followers. Favouriting does not. Kbin does not yet contain a follower feed, but it is planned. This is what that looks like on Mastodon:

Secondary? The boosting of a post is secondary to the... boosting?

I'd be down with the use of a reblog/retweet icon. It's ubiquitous enough that a majority of people would understand it.

EDIT. Parent was edited. I agree the upvote is the "side effect".

There was a sneaky edit. I believe "upvote" was added.

I just bought an actual domain and use that 😅

As an added bonus, letsencrypt works with no effort.

Not really suspicion at this point. They are proveably 403 rejecting requests from the KBin useragent. You have the letters "kbinbot" anywhere in your useragent (case insensitive) you ain't getting content.

As a bonus they're still sending out stuff to instances though. But since KBin can't then resolve it it amounts to a DoS attack as the messages just build up in KBin retry queues.

A number of kbin instances already have. But not .social - which is obviously the largest instance.

Aggravatingly .ml users can browse and interact with kbin magazines just fine as we let them in. It's very much a bad faith thing at this point.

It'll never happen, centralised means stable. Just check out what this company called Google have built!

ReallyKinda, to kbinMeta

I found the neat visual customization options (color, rounded corners, etc) but the changes don’t seem to stick! Is this a me thing or kbin thing?

VerifiablyMrWonka,

@ReallyKinda It uses cookies and so is per-browser - but they are retained for a long time. I've not seen them disappear.

Fortunately, on Mastodon at least, you can set a per person ignore/hide on boosts. Very helpful if they do good posts but are generally spammy with boosts.

Imgur have quite recently blocked my VPN (privately hosted, not mainstream). They don't like non-domestic IPs accessing their service it appears. I fear the only way to fix this is not to attempt to pull and cache imgur images :(
