After the (temporary) defederation announcement of earlier i checked the Lemmy repo to see if there was already a ticket on the federation limiting option like Mastodon's that people mentioned Lemmy doesn't yet have. Not only i didn't find it, i also saw that there's about 200+ open tickets of variable importance. Also saw that...
It has one. Minus an undocumented step (that's sat fixed in a pr). Bringing it up amounts to 4 lines in a console; 1 to bring up the stack and 3 to start a JS watch for asset compilation.
Good morning! :) Today I want to focus mainly on reviewing the pull requests you've submitted. There are many great things there that will help improve the kbin experience. That's amazing, thank you! I'm also in the final stages of sorting out the infrastructure-related formalities. Soon, the situation with the website's...
Being overwhelmed is not messing up. Taking care of number 1 should always be a priority.
Am glad to see some delegation happening. Developing, running and modding a service as large as KBin has become is no easy task for 1 person and you've done spectacular so far.
He's apparently found some people to help with the infra side of things - which is the hardest thing to do. This means more focus on improving the product. :D
They’re both built on ActivityPub and look very similar, but Kbin is talked about like an alternative to Lemmy instead of an instance of it. Is it a fork? Why is it better or worse?
I've heard there's an official kbin app in very early stages. I don't know who's working on that, but it's not in the 2023 roadmap that Ernest has shared in the sidebar - and it rightfully doesn't need to be a main focus at this early stage. I know most people reading this have probably just gotten here as well, but I wouldn't...
The currently enabled Cloudflare protections (that i'm sure you've seen popup every now and then) actively stop federation from working. Once thats turned off it should all just start working.
Yeah. I have a concern that because of the length of time it's been down we'll be seeing bigger than normal fragmentation of communities.
It's already the case that the previous "big" communities from places like beehaw.org and lemmy.ml have been replaced by KBin ones meanin that going forward this instance may be hosting the greater number - which isn't good for the fediverse.
@NotTheOnlyGamer@ppptan The magazine url is case sensitive but the creation of one isn't. i.e. you can't create 'technology' if 'Technology' exists. There's an open issue for this.
As a project KBin is about a month old. The fact that ernest has managed to make it anywhere near as feature complete as he has (and still have it functioning with 120k users) is mind boggling.
So just like email, your username is the full @user@domain. In your case your username is @massacre@kbin.social. A user at a different instance with the same name is a different user. Just like massacre@hotmail.com and massacre@gmail.com are different
@Ape@McQueen There's actually an in-progress official flutter based (cross platform) app. Last I saw was it vaguely working on iOS simulator. It's kind of been put on hold whilst the migration hug of death takes its toll.
Yeah, you want an link/article/photo or video not a post. Posts are like Twitter/Mastodon posts and are actually viewable by people on Mastodon and other fediverse short form services.
Lemmy is in serious need of more devs

Do you use a separate knife for the Marmite?
I just go straight from the butter to the marmite like an animal. Does this make me a savage?
Beehaw is defederating from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, two large lemmy instances
See Beehaw's Post to find out why
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Dragon (2023) (youtu.be)
Not sure how many King Gizz fans we have, but this song is so good. The music video is amazing lol

Is there a way to collapse a comment and its family like you can do in reddit?
It is really useful on reddit but here I don't see anything around the left side to collapse so i have to keep scrolling.
What’s the difference between Kbin and Lemmy?
They’re both built on ActivityPub and look very similar, but Kbin is talked about like an alternative to Lemmy instead of an instance of it. Is it a fork? Why is it better or worse?
Any third-party apps being developed?

Federation status: ON
Seems like the federation was turned on not long ago. It's very exciting to be part of kbin's growth!
[CORRECTION] 7742 went dark out of the 8299 that committed. Interesting to note: 204 of the top 250 subreddits are dark (src: save3rdpartyapps.com). (reddark.untone.uk)
As of 12:56pm GMT (7:56am central time), 7742/8299 subreddits are no longer public...
OC Lol, I keep forgetting I've blocked reddit at the router level and keep visiting out of habit
kbin.social is.. fast again?
been using it in and out and now it's... much faster? on both mobile and desktop :O am i just crazy or did @ernest bless us with a miracle
kbin.social is getting the hug of death right now, consider signing up for another instance
Hey Reddit refugees! You may have noticed that kbin.social is taking forever to load because of all of the traffic it's getting....
Hoping this is correct. Whats a Thread under a magazine, especially vs. a Microblog
And why must I create a new 'article' to make a thread and not a post - which I think makes a new microblog....
