What are some creative ways for a GM to deal with narrative for when players are not able to attend a session?

Hey all, my friend is starting a new game. We have some newbies joining and their attendance maybe hit and miss, with work schedules and life. What are some creative ways your groups have managed missing players outside of someone paying for them one session?

For the few games I've run:

  • If half of the players cannot make it, we postpone/reschedule. No point in playing if half the group is missing.
  • If someone misses a session, we ignore them unless they've designated someone else to play their character. They still get xp but as I've gotten older, IRL happens and it's no ones fault if they can't make a session.
  • If a character must be involved and no one has been designated, I take over for them. I personally don't like doing that because reasons, but some situations honestly call for things like that.

Other than those things, I type up post session recaps and share with them. That way it's a good refresher in between sessions and if someone missed a session, they can read and catch up with what happened. Mind you, we play every other Saturday for 2 hours at a time because IRL and adulting lol.

Festival of the Four Winds is back!

When I logged in yesterday, I saw that Festival of the Four Winds was out. This is probably one of my more favorite seasonal events in the game just because of everything that happens. I updated my guide from 3 years ago to include all the new things, but if I forgot something, lmk!...

Glad I could be of help!

Not quite sure how to go about fixing that. Edit: I figured it out. Thanks!

Mostly for those who WvW. Until alliances actually launch, still server based.

Glad you're enjoying the game! I'm pretty sure if you ever need help, there's tons of people you can reach out to.

Glad I'm not the only one with horrible RNG for this game. Not on that part but relic cracking is my doom. Grats!

Thank you!

@foxfell Had to look up Dalaran. This guide is for the game Guild Wars 2, not World of Warcraft. Good to know where to get one of these in that game though!

So far I've enjoyed necro and engi possibilities. Hope to see more fun stuff to come.

I tend to enjoy movies directed by Terry Gilliam, Stanley Kubrick, Clive Barker, Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, Ridley Scott, John Carpenter, or Christopher Nolan. I'm sure there's way more out there that I've forgotten. With that said, the older Steven Spielberg movies were great, but I kind of fell off that wagon awhile back.

As a former GW1 player, I detested the Silent Surf zone. Elite skill capturing was important to me, but this area was abysmal. Hope the fractal rectifies that memory!

OC Getting a Skyscale

Hey all, I wanted to break the ice on my end and share with you a helpful guide to getting a Skyscale mount. I keep running across players in the game that ask about the mount itself and how to go about getting one. Since I started making guides to help the community, I just want to share and spread the knowledge....

@man0fbass Ooo I will definitely add that in! I try to keep things up to date, but there are details I miss on occassion. Also thank you! I actually got inspired to make this guide BECAUSE of the wiki. Some of the pictures/descriptions are abysmal x.x

@WingedHussar I get told this a lot. It makes me feel really good hearing it, but at the same time it makes me feel like I need to be quicker on pushing out guides 😆 There is a backlog of guides I want to make, but mounts are a bit more on the to-do list. I'm looking at making the griffon mount next, using my husband's account for the pictures. One thing I really focus on is that I am actively pursuing that same thing in the pictures/guide making process. This way, if I encounter any issues, I can mention it. Thank you, too!

Doing my first play through of The Witcher. Trying to get through my backlog of games while streaming, so after this one, I'll be moving on to The Witcher 2, then 3. My style is pretty much anything and everything, but a good story will generally get me hooked. Played Mass Effect last year and man, those were good.

Just realized this was for tabletop rpgs. Oops! I've been GMing a Pathfinder 1e mashup of The Crimson Throne and The Jade Regent. Originally it was 2 seperate groups, but due to 2 people bowing out for irl reasons, I decided to merge the groups. It's been great so far. Added in a little side flair for 1 of the groups originally, so been mixing in a bit of that too.
