OC How did you end up finding kbin? Did you migrate here from Reddit?

I was initially introduced to Mastodon a few years ago by a close friend and picked up on it quickly given the benefits of not having to deal with advertising, or being shown what a mega-corporation thought I should have to see through algorithms. Nice! I am currently running the Element nightly build (for Matrix) and it seems pretty nice. It's difficult finding active off-topic/general chats though so far in my experience. Great place though to get support on some things.

Welcome! That's definitely an impressive stretch of visiting Reddit. I hope you find that you enjoy it here and are able to figure out the user interface well. I'm still in the same boat on that front. It is a bit different from Reddit in some ways. I'll admit It even took me a minute to realize the plus icon was how I was supposed to add new posts/articles/photos etc.

Welcome Guy! Glad you decided to make an account here and joined us. I haven't used Infinity before, ended up using Sync for Reddit (on Android) for many years, but like the rest of them it's on the way out as well.

Welcome and hello! Definitely agreed, It's very encouraging to see the activity increasing here. I know quite a few people have expressed that they are unhappy with Reddit right now. I hope they stick around for a while so we can carve out a better community here.

That's amazing. Never been to Alaska but it looks quite scenic, this would definitely be the time of year I'd want to go. Iceland has always been a place I wanted to visit at some point, hoping to get around to it, it's on my list for potential trips. As for vandwelling I've definitely been one to check r/vandwellers when I was still on Reddit, interesting lifestyle choice, seems very freeing.

Outside of this, do you use anything that could be considered social media?

I originally had signed up for a few social media platforms in their early days but over time I felt that I wasn't seeing what I thought I wanted to see. As companies started tailoring their algorithms things started to get less relevant to my interests. As a result I left behind those platforms for a couple of years before...

That's interesting, thanks for sharing. I'd forgotten about Discord. Definitely use Discord to keep up with friends for the most part as well.

Wow! Yeah Friendster was one I missed. I have definitely noticed a lot of platforms won't even let you browse anymore without an account. Facebook marketplace, for instance, which is unfortunately the only "local" option for a marketplace available online as they pretty much killed Craigslist. Same with Twitter and not being able to read beyond a certain amount or search without joining. It's a real hassle, sometimes. That's understandable about being burned out a bit, I think I'm in the same boat for most traditional social media.

I'm mostly starting from scratch on Mastodon. I had an account on mastodon.social that had many followers/people that I followed years ago, but closed it to take a hiatus from social media for awhile, personal reasons. Recently I discovered a good instance and signed up again, but I only follow like 20 people. Would be nice to network with more people as well.

Interests: Vinyl, electric guitar, music discovery, tech and general chit-chat.
What you post: Mainly vinyl and general chit-chat. Sometimes I share music I find if it really hits me right. Sometimes I boost photography.

I would start by checking into the public magazine list. Unfortunately you will find a lot of sparsely populated magazines, but it is up to us to create new content to help make this place worth sticking around for as well. There are however some active ones out there, and I'm sure you will find a few worth subscribing for! That said, thank you so much for contributing this to the community. I'm looking forward to reading others opinions on some of the best communities the fediverse has to offer.

Thanks for the input. I have been using Discord for quite a while now, but I am leaning towards Matrix due to the federated nature of it. My only caveat is just how many people would be willing to check it out vs Discord, which seems widely adopted, so it's good to know you'd be open to checking it out as someone who hasn't yet. Appreciate that.

y’all, today has been a day. between stress at work and moving to a new apartment in something like 9 days, i am finding it difficult to motivate myself to move a muscle, let alone do anything productive.

how are y’all? is everyone else holding up okay in the face of all this social media shakeup, and anything else you might have going on?

@mishamouse Good luck with the move! I've been struggling to get motivated as well as I just dropped coffee in favor of tea and the reduction in caffeine has left me with bouts of tiredness over the last two days. Overall still doing good though, can't complain too much. This community received a lot of activity on day 1 of Reddit going dark so that was cool to see.

Do you have any planned vacations? Where to? Do you have a favorite destination?

I currently don't have any planned that I'm looking forward to, but someone I know is currently in Costa Rica for a trip and is having a blast from what I hear. I'm thinking of planning something! I do have availability to do one soon, just not sure where I'd go yet.

The area around Frisco/Breckenridge/Vail/Copper Mountain (the front range) is very beautiful. I've only been there during the winter and fall for skiing and snowboarding, but I know during the summer they do a lot of bike rentals out of the same shops. Hiking and camping seems plentiful in the summer months. That's pretty much the only area of Colorado I've been to though. I hope you can find a good vacation spot for the family, good luck!

@AdmiralSnackbar I think here karma farming will be over unless something is changed, which maybe is a good thing. Seems like follows are the only thing that matters on the profile page.
