That's so awesome, glad you're making progress!

So fathers day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 18th in US, UK, CA & more. Do you have anything planned?

I thought this would be a good reminder as well. While I am not a father myself, I spend time with mine usually, doing whatever he has planned for the day. We're not really much for exchanging cards and such. I think time spent together is an ample way to spend the day overall....

Oh, that sounds nice, should be a good day then. I haven't stopped by an ice cream stand yet this year, should do that before the season is out for sure. Usually I go for moose tracks if they have it.

Curious, if you were/are a Reddit user, will you be leaving the platform for good or have you already? CEO has called unpaid moderators' concerns "noise", that will be "passing soon."

There's a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we've seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would....

Yeah, totally understandable. That's quite a run. As you've said even if they were to backpedal and reverse everything- which they won't there's definitely no guarantee it won't just happen again in the future. It seems like they're using a heavy hand this time, and now they're even threatening to oust mods for protesting.

Besides there are probably better ways to use all the time I used to waste scrolling through my Reddit feed.

Honestly it's kind of nice having a full fledged app in my pocket to burn time with. Though I'm not opposed to one for kbin (or the existing one for lemmy), it's been pretty refreshing just having my access mostly be limited to desktop. I do find myself more centered on what's happening in front of me when I'm out and about.

There are a few niche hobby and interest communities I might check in on

I hope we see even more niche communities see growth on different instances. I've noticed quite a few are popping up with subscribers, they just need participation from the community more than anything. I think they will get that as more people adopt the platform.

That's amazing. Never been to Alaska but it looks quite scenic, this would definitely be the time of year I'd want to go. Iceland has always been a place I wanted to visit at some point, hoping to get around to it, it's on my list for potential trips. As for vandwelling I've definitely been one to check r/vandwellers when I was still on Reddit, interesting lifestyle choice, seems very freeing.

I'm mostly starting from scratch on Mastodon. I had an account on mastodon.social that had many followers/people that I followed years ago, but closed it to take a hiatus from social media for awhile, personal reasons. Recently I discovered a good instance and signed up again, but I only follow like 20 people. Would be nice to network with more people as well.

Interests: Vinyl, electric guitar, music discovery, tech and general chit-chat.
What you post: Mainly vinyl and general chit-chat. Sometimes I share music I find if it really hits me right. Sometimes I boost photography.

Outside of this, do you use anything that could be considered social media?

I originally had signed up for a few social media platforms in their early days but over time I felt that I wasn't seeing what I thought I wanted to see. As companies started tailoring their algorithms things started to get less relevant to my interests. As a result I left behind those platforms for a couple of years before...

Wow! Yeah Friendster was one I missed. I have definitely noticed a lot of platforms won't even let you browse anymore without an account. Facebook marketplace, for instance, which is unfortunately the only "local" option for a marketplace available online as they pretty much killed Craigslist. Same with Twitter and not being able to read beyond a certain amount or search without joining. It's a real hassle, sometimes. That's understandable about being burned out a bit, I think I'm in the same boat for most traditional social media.

Thanks for the input. I have been using Discord for quite a while now, but I am leaning towards Matrix due to the federated nature of it. My only caveat is just how many people would be willing to check it out vs Discord, which seems widely adopted, so it's good to know you'd be open to checking it out as someone who hasn't yet. Appreciate that.

Thanks for the input everyone. For now I've started a Matrix chat and put it in the sidebar for anyone interested. In the future I may consider also adding a Discord.

@CynAq Glad to hear ernest didn't leave that feature out on Kbin. I hope I don't have to use it, but it's good that it's there for when it inevitably becomes needed lol.

OC How did you end up finding kbin? Did you migrate here from Reddit?

I was initially introduced to Mastodon a few years ago by a close friend and picked up on it quickly given the benefits of not having to deal with advertising, or being shown what a mega-corporation thought I should have to see through algorithms. I have since found a great instance over on cupoftea.social that promotes quality...

Wow, Yeah I imagine many more third party apps will end up shutting down as well. Apollo is probably just the first of many. Apollo was a great way to access Reddit. It's a real shame, but hopefully enough people come to the alternatives to make it work out even for more niche interests.

Welcome! That's definitely an impressive stretch of visiting Reddit. I hope you find that you enjoy it here and are able to figure out the user interface well. I'm still in the same boat on that front. It is a bit different from Reddit in some ways. I'll admit It even took me a minute to realize the plus icon was how I was supposed to add new posts/articles/photos etc.

I'm subscribed to quite a few lemmy based magazines so that's cool that it's a thing. I am still wrapping my head around the Fediverse to be honest. I know there are ways to interact with this from Mastodon but I'm still figuring it out, ha. Thanks for sharing your journey here and welcome! I did see some detractors of Lemmy as well which ultimately resulted in me creating an account here instead, but really the complaints didn't seem very substantial in my opinion. I'm going to stick it out as well, hoping we get more active communities and people starting groups around even more specific interests as time goes on.

Thank you for sharing your journey here! It's a shame Reddit has failed users in so many ways, in particular as of late. I think I will close my Reddit account sometime today and leave it behind for good. I'd also like to donate in some capacity. I currently donate to the mastodon instance I joined so it would make sense to support this as well for sure. Do you have the link to donate by any chance?

What did you have for lunch?

What Do you all use to clean your records and players ?

I got a Big Fudge kit with the velvet brush and I got to say its the best so far after 2 kits with cloths that just seem to get dirty too quickly. I think the cloths must put the dirt into other grooves of the records where as the velvet brushes just brush the dirt along the top of it and out the record....

I admittedly need to upgrade! I've been using a large microfiber and some cleaning spray from Boundless, along with an anti static carbon fiber vinyl record cleaning brush from Opula. Both seem to do the job well enough, but I don't think carbon fiber is the best solution for a brush.
