Biden offers new student debt relief plan, lashes out at GOP after Supreme Court ruling (apnews.com)

President Joe Biden vowed Friday to push ahead with a new plan providing student loan relief for millions of borrowers while blaming Republican “hypocrisy” for triggering the day’s Supreme Court decision that wiped out his original effort.

Trying to eliminate that much student loan debt using an executive order was such a fool's errand doomed for failure I doubt it was ever done in good faith. It's easy to do something you know won't fly and then say "hey, I tried!"

Want to give the middle class of America a break? Cut their taxes. Eliminate them entirely. Will you have to cut spending to avoid snowballing debt? Yes, probably, but at least that will actually work.

It’s definitely possible to see scammy for-profit strategies pop up.

There's not inherently bad about there being a profit motive. Servers are expensive, developers are expensive. There are costs to be paid, and if I am going to do something full time I'm going to have to pay my bills, too.

That said, there's definitely a line where it's taken too far and it loses what originally made it great cough cough.

I'll fight someone who tells me I shouldn't have McDonald's breakfast burritos. I don't eat them because I want a good breakfast burrito, I eat them because I want those specific breakfast burritos.

I keep forgetting that damn app exists. I just opened it after forever and there's some pretty decent deals in there even without the rewards.

Yeah the chicken is mostly a vehicle for the sauce but the texture and moisture in that chicken is excellent. It is rather bland, though.

To add to this, imagine that pulley on the end is connected to another pulley through a few gears. When it spins one way, it turns the last pulley one way. When it spins the other, it meshes with another gear to turn the last pulley the same way.

You've converted AC current into DC current, which you can use to drive a motor in one direction. This gearing is usually done via a series of diodes.

If that's what the people in that magazine want to see they're not being trolled at all. Now if that shit leaks out, then yeah I'm 100% with you.

Sure, and if the instance operators decide that I respect it. Just saying it's not up to me, or you, or the person I replied to.

Actually not trying to be a dick or a pedant, but is there a problem with just the git command? I've been using it since git existed so I don't really have anything to compare it to. The idea of finding another client seems a bit strange to me.

I guess I can see that. It's not common I need to do so, but a few times I've went spelunking with git log [file] and git diff sha..sha [file] and I could see that being useful presented graphically.

For the people coming in asking what app for Lemmy. You don't need it. Lemmy is great on a mobile browser.

The only reason why we all used third party apps for Reddit, is because their app and website is abhorrent trash. It’s great to have a choice, but Lemmy’s website is smooth to use. I know it’s mind blowing not to use a app for everything in 2023 but Lemmy just works.

It's really not that great on mobile, but they could improve.

  • UI elementsn in the mobile browser need better visual feedback that the link that only vaguely looks clickable has been clicked. This problem is compounded by the fact that the servers are very slow, so several seconds pass by before anything happens.

  • Requests don't cancel if multiple things happen, resulting in inconsistent navigation.

  • The back button doesn't do pretty much anything that you'd expect.

  • Clicking the logo at the top should take me "Home" - instead it does inconsistent things.

  • On kbin the PWA doesn't adhere to my device's rotation lock, resulting in the entire page flipping around all the time.

  • The "reply to post" control should be at the top of the comments, not the bottom. I shouldn't have to scroll for days to enter a top level comment.

  • After interacting with a post I hit Back to get back to my main feed - this does seemingly whatever the hell it wants and it varies even within the same instance.

  • Constant "are you sure you want to navigate away" prompts are annoying. Generally speaking there's no reason for these to happen.

These are the things I've noticed in about 3 or 4 hours of use. All fixable with some concern taken in UI work, but it's an experience that's bumpy at best. I love the minimalist UI, things like OG reddit or rif are great, but the way the UI feels is just as important as the way it looks, and every Lemmy instance I've interacted with leaves a lot to be desired there.

@RogerRm ngl this comment unexpectedly made me feel really nice. I'm learning to speak Spanish and with the exception of a few phrases: "que el Mesías," "la nueva venida de Jesucristo a la Tierra," and "dejado de la mano" I was able to read what you said.

Those particular phrases, I was about 75% sure on the first two just because of their English counterparts, but the last I had no idea lol.

That's interesting, though. I haven't used Tildes but I got real used to rif's interface and this is taking some getting used to.

I was high on the hopium that they'd eventually show some flex too

wsb is already salivating to short reddit's IPO. I'm thinking I might get in on that, too.
