@fedosyndicate@kbin.social

Hello world! A long time ago I used to play a game called EVE Online. There are silly little creatures called Fedo there. So when joining the Fediverse, I made a bit of a pun.

Why am I being suspended?

I created an account on mastodon.social a few days ago. A day after creation, my account was suspended. My appeal was denied and no reason was given. So I assumed mastodon.social was not accepting new accounts, so I moved over to mastodon.online and created an account there. Today that account was suspended as well, again...

These guys are even more paranoid than many smaller instances about user names that appear to be randomly generated. Your own user name, as others in this thread suggested, would easily trigger their auto-ban rules. And a human moderator would take one look at the name and think the same thing.

God damnit, it took me until now to actually read their username. It's the youtube URL for the rickroll video (ending in XcQ). I think you're right though - it was obviously autogenerated originally and only took on its current meaning via Youtube's use of the string.

The problem is scaling. If it takes say, 30 seconds per name, but the number of n is very large, then if you ban say, 1000 dudes a day then the 30,000 seconds becomes a requirement of 8 hours of mod explanations (collectively) per day. It's a scaling issue, in short.

I didn't realise this was a Political Compass thing but the colors of the backgrounds check out

It's funny, many wikis moved off then-wikia to Curse's Gamepedia family and then they just merged back again, kinda sad :(

I remember installing PC adblock just for Wowhead because even though they have great info (just about all the quests and dailies in WoW) they have so many ads and video popups. Haven't really looked back since.

I haven't gotten around to doing adblock for my phone, and so whenever I do visit those sites, I get really annoyed by everything.

Well, I guess we know he's been doing some weed already. ;)

Well, Germany is officially a Federal Republic, it does make some sense they would join a federated universe :)

It only just clicked that the company literally has the -gate suffix in its name, I think that just adds to the ridiculousness of the situation!

The closest I know of is the Sync app developer coming to Lemmy: https://lemmy.world/post/803492

Yeah, video ads are the popup ads of our days. Just as intrusive. Money corrupts :(

Dedicated graphics? Super fancy! It wasn't until I started buying GPUs for my PC quite recently that I realised how expensive those chips were (and are). Or how hot they get, I'm amazed a tiny little 11.6" thing could keep itself from overheating!

Even if I'm much happier with a big ole ATX PC these days (to keep temps low and fans quiet) and stay at home a lot more, I agree that there is something special about small lil pieces of tech.

It's kinda sad how SLI and Crossfire faded away. I used to think multiple GPUs were amazing and wanted my own SLI setup! But technology went a different way. It's probably better for my wallet though!

Yeah, when they talked about procedural generation I was imagining like, photorealistic details or custom textures on the fly, something way more advanced than what was available at the time. I didn't really understand it but it sounded fancy! But all it really meant was like a random map and random species being chosen. It didn't quite live up to the marketing, sadly.

Haha, I mean I'm using up 8 gigs of ram with 10 chrome tabs open, 16gb is definitely starting to look a little lightweight than I'd like at the moment. I built my PC in 2020 with 16gb and around the end of 2021 I ended upgrading with two more sticks, just to keep things running smoothly!

There's definitely something to be said for classic simplicity!

Yeah, Apple spent a lot of investment getting the thing going, but it is certainly still a modern powerhouse. Even if worldwide iOS has a smaller marketshare than Android, Apple is huge in Japan, the US and UK.

Heartily recommend this Computerphile video with some history and background about Ethernet and a bit about where the name came from!

I'll be honest - as pleased as I am that our communities are still federated, I am somewhat surprised because kbin registration is open and is growing fairly steadily. I only hope that useful and constructive participation from our instance outweighs the bad, although I can certainly understand a few awfully rotten apples would probably not have left a good impression!

We're having our own issues trying to shut down the intolerant crowd. That being said, I should report that they're currently being downvoted 3:7 (because that's a feature kbin supports); and I might have to ask around if Ernest (kbin dev) could be clearer about showing the names of federated communities and users because those things are not nearly as clear as when I view the same post from a Lemmy instance.

[edit: on re-reading, the sentence that followed it that said "I think there's outreach to be done" is clear, even if I think the words could have been ordered better for flow, and connect this more directly and closely to the "unfortunate" comment.]

The charitable interpretation of it is that we need to be intentionally welcome and aware of POC in the community

Yeah, I think as written it implies too much to be interpreted unambiguously. I agree, the charitable interpretation is "we need to do more" but that's an inference that is drawn from my pre-existing understanding of beehaw's management and vision, and maybe a sprinkling of trust in their intentions.

Without explicitly stating "unfortunately we failed to reach minority communities," my feeling is that it leaves a lot of room for accusation of other parties for the "unfortunateness" of the situation or misreading of future intent, and personally I think that just leads to unclear communication.

It looks like they pulled from the "White alone or in combination" statistic -- although you're right; "71.5%" is not used, only "71%" or "71.0%" without the extra 0.5 on the end!

fedosyndicate,

One thought that's already occurred is more dedicated efforts to grow communities that are useful to minority individuals or may attract them to use this site.

That sounds like a great idea, although not without its challenges (as an example, finding people both from those groups, and also willing to invest time into the community as leaders/mods). It would be very hard to found a community like that without finding someone who closely knows what that community needs and what would draw the group to a given social media platform; but if the process was done right their participation would certainly be a big draw for the site!

Because people bring their personal experiences, histories, and identities to every discussion.

Exactly this. I think it's great to bring a range of social values from different cultures to a discussion. I think that a wider range of values helps make for fairer outcomes.

It is possible I set an unusually high bar for specificity, and when I read it back actually the following sentence "I think there's outreach to be done in that regard as well." does give appropriate grounds for interpretation. I'll strike or retract the paragraph because with what I know now, I don't think what I said was accurate any more.

Personally though, I do think that the clearest communication is done with a lower reliance on context. What may appear obvious to some may simply go over others heads. I don't think that pre-existing knowledge is entirely irrelevant, but I don't think it should be completely relied upon either.

I'm pretty sure he was on Mastodon way before the migration! Alec was one of the first few federated accounts I looked for once I got the word we were all moving.
