From the article:

The move has been strongly contested by pro-independence parties in New Caledonia, who fear the new rules (which would allow up to 25,000 voters to access the local suffrage) will threaten the French Pacific entity's political balances.

During heated debates last week and Tuesday for the vote, Senators sometimes traded vigorous words, with the left-wing parties (including Socialists and Communists) rallying in support of New Caledonia's pro-independence parties and accusing Darmanin of "forcing the text through".

New Caledonia's pro-independence umbrella, the FLNKS, last week officially demanded that the French government withdraw its Constitutional amendment project and that, instead, a high-level mediatory mission be sent to New Caledonia.

Parallel to the Parliamentary moves, New Caledonia's politicians, both pro and against independence, have been asked to sit together and engage in comprehensive talks in order to devise a new agreement that would replace the now-defunct Nouméa Accord, signed in 1998.

One of the Accord's prescriptions was that three consecutive referendums on New Caledonia's self-determination be held....

During debates on Tuesday, Senators often alluded to the recent radicalisation from both the pro-independence and pro-French parties.

Last week, the two antagonist tendencies held two demonstrations and marches at the same time, both in downtown Nouméa, only a few hundred meters away from each other.

Thousands, on each side, have held banners and flags opposing the electoral changes on one side and supporting them on the other side.

There was also a clear escalation in the tone of speeches held, notably on the "loyalists" (pro-France).

Part of their protest last Thursday was also to denounce a series of government-imposed taxes, including one on fuel (which has since been withdrawn after a series of blockades) and the other on electricity (to avoid bankruptcy for local power company Enercal)

Last month, "loyalists" members walked out of New Caledonia's "collegial" government, saying they regarded their pro-independence party colleagues as "illegitimate".

On the local scene, over the past few months, New Caledonia has been facing the very real effects of an economic crisis for its crucial nickel industry.

One of the three nickel mining plants has been temporarily shut down and the other two are facing a similarly bleak future, putting at risk thousands of jobs....

IDF sources: Gaza aid workers killed because 'officers on the ground do what they want' (www.haaretz.com)

The IDF and defense ministry claimed that the aid workers’ killing resulted from poor coordination. Israeli army sources later refuted their claims, saying the incident has ‘no connection to coordination’ and was caused by the fact that ‘every commander sets the rules for himself’...

I've seen cases of war criminals brought to justice many, many years after their crimes.

Even if they seem untouchable right now, it's important to keep records relating to this genocide because one day we (the people of the world) might be in a position to prosecute some of these monsters.

Dawkins is a weird guy. And a troll.

He lost me years ago when he claimed being raped by someone you know is better than being raped by someone you don't know.

livus,

Yikes.

livus,

It's sad that he rationalises being molested as a kid, but that's his prerogative if that's how he copes. But it's not okay for him to try to say everyone else should be cool with it too.

Like you say, he was at boarding school in UK 1949 and it was unacceptable then as well!!

It's pretty standard for aNoTheR ErA arguments to conveniently ignore the many people who weren't okay with whatever it was at the time either.

livus,

I agree with you. And it always turns out not everyone was onboard at the time.

There were always people who were anti slavery, anti rape etc. Even egregious stuff like, say, Colombus on Hispaniola, there were other people from his own civilisation who thought he was terrible.

the value is still the value. You want to live in that $500 a week house

That doesn't make any sense. 5 hours ago you were saying the rent had to reflect the cost of repaying borrowing on the asset.

That cost is dependent on equity and mortgage rate.

But now you're suddenly saying living in the house is inherently "worth" a sum of money that isn't tied to borrowing costs at all. Seems arbitrary.

In reality, rentals cost what the market will bear, in some markets that's well below the cost of a new mortgage so those investors have to top up for a few years. In other markets it's not.

livus,
livus avatar

I'm not trying to misconstrue you, I was just pointing out that you seemed to be arguing two opposite points of view. This is the crux of it:

mortgage rates go down the buy in cost goes down so rentals go down.

@DarkDarkHouse was pointing out that in practice doesn't really ever happen, and I would agree with them.

They've already said it doesn't meet the criminal threshold and they will not be arresting her.

Bitter old troll still got her 15 minutes of fame I guess.

‘Not a normal war’: doctors say children have been targeted by Israeli snipers in Gaza (www.theguardian.com)

Children account for more than one in three of the more than 32,000 people killed in Israel’s months-long assault on Gaza, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Tens of thousands more young people have suffered severe injuries, including amputations..... But doctors also reported treating a steady stream of children,...

His "outrage" is meaningless. He's actively aiding and abetting.

US credibility is taking a hit on the global stage.

As for Biden, I can really see why this issue is hurting his campaign in the US. As well as supporting genocide it just makes him sound super insincere and duplicitous.

@ouRKaoS is right, it was black suede leather instead of normal leather.

Dress code didn't say anything about level of shine though, it just said black leather brogues.

I too am outraged by the outrage.

livus,

This article's compatible with that. The tldr is as usual brother laser, any model.

I think it's more that they don't want their own country to aid in a genocide. Even if the genocide could still happen without you, that's no reason to give up and support it.

That said,

  • As a political ally the US protects Israel from being attacked by its neighbours

  • it would also block any intervention by the UN

  • Since Oct 7 the US has done over 200 arms deals with Israel and has provided at least 1,800 of the numerous 2,000 pound bombs they are hitting Gaza with (for reference the US only dropped one 2,000 pound bomb on Islamic State in its entire conflict with it)

  • The US has also shared military intelligence/surveillance data with Israel, which is using AI to target Palestinians

I thought the whole point of having a democracy was people got to choose their leaders.

If you're saying leaders become too powerful to reject, that's troubling.

livus,
livus avatar

To clarify, the above wasn't some kind of rhetorical question. I'm not American and am not asking for voting guidance.

You seemed to be saying that once a politician gets to a position of power, voters are no longer allowed to try to influence their decisions around whether to run, be the nominee etc.

That seems problematic to me, and against the basic principles of democracy, so I'm querying it.

livus,
livus avatar

That seems really anti-democracy. If an incumbent performs poorly or breaks promises there should be mechanisms for people to ask to select another candidate to represent them.

livus,
livus avatar

But didn't you just say they can't vote for non-Biden democrats?

I feel like either I completely misunderstood your initial comment about Presidents having so much power, or else you're misunderstanding what I'm asking.
