Mastodon really needs to catch up.

"Quote and reply controls appear to be bundled together in a single dropdown menu, where users can open the conversation to “Anyone,” or limit it to “Profiles you follow” or “Mentioned only.”"

@stefan there's work in progress or starting on both of these. Remember, threads has a dozen if not hundred engineers available to it, Mastodon has 1.5-2 core staff engineers, and a litany of volunteers.

@thisismissem Oh I know. But I really think most people would be satisfied with just having a proper preview, which some third-party Mastodon apps already do.

Maybe the implementation could've been done in two steps, start with the preview, and then focus on the spec?

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@stefan no, because that'd compromise on people's right to choose not to be quoted.

@thisismissem I do see what you're saying, and looking at what "quoting someone" means the way you seem to do, I definitely get it.

Well, knowing this is something that's being actively worked on, I'm just going to have to be patient, that's all.

@thisismissem Intuitively, it seems reasonable that the lack of preview prevents abuse, as it requires an extra action, clicking on the link to view the post.

But is there any actual data that confirms this?

You can still easily link to a post and ask your followers to harass that person. Maybe linking to posts should be disabled altogether, until privacy controls are in place?

traccer,

@stefan
Worin sollte darin ein Sinn bestehen. Wenn du etwas öffentlich Postest, dann willst du Reaktionen darauf haben. Andernfalls hättest du es eingeschränkt.

@traccer The bigger point here is that Threads is getting quote posts before Mastodon.

And yes, we really can't compare the resources Mastodon vs Meta each have available to build features like these, but I also think we're overthinking it a bit, see my response here: https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112383956710904209

traccer,

@stefan
Es würde darüber hinaus die Grundfeste Berühren, auf der das Fediverse aufbaut. Ein Social Network, in dem der freie Austausch das oberste Ziel ist.
Warum wollen wir immer kommerzieller denken und handeln?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@traccer Sorry, not sure if it's the automatic German-to-English translation, but are you saying quote posts are commercial?

traccer,

@stefan
It's about this specification https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/e232/fep-e232.md, which is also implemented by META's threads, right?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@traccer Ah, I don't know the technical details, sorry.

traccer,

@stefan
Oh, I'm sorry. I had all the posts here automatically translated and thought they spoke German ;)

Quoting a post is a basic function in Fediverse.
I was concerned with restricting the commenting function.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@traccer No worries!

And I don't know, I won't really get into this, but if people want more control over their posts, it seems fair to allow that.

traccer,

@stefan
If you agree on the basis of the protocol, that's perfectly fine. But it must not be a proprietary solution.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@traccer Sure, I can definitely get behind that!
