I won't say that watching “Whisper of the Heart” cracked my egg exactly, because I already knew what I wanted at least since I was 8 in 1965. I had set up all sorts of internal barricades over the years, and they were already leaking badly by 1995 (thanks, Ranma ½). I identified so strongly with Shizuku—I saw myself in her in so many ways, and vice versa, in a way I never had before in a fictional character. And I couldn't unsee that. The genie was out of the bottle.

Bridging update:
th***s.net: (yes, some people block even the name.) Working great though still just one-way. I follow several people that way, and have not seen a single ad or a single bully. We'll see what happens when it's two-way. Meanwhile, it's enriching my experience.
Bsky via fed.brid.gy: Very early beta. I'm not seeing replies, or embedded links, or even all posts. Patience.
The promise of the Fediverse is interoperability, so I'm glad these bridges exist.

@assigned.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy I'm sorry to say the bridge isn't working very well, so I'm not seeing most of what you're writing on BSky. It's still in beta, though, so maybe it will get better.

Do you see a series of sunken rectangles or 16 circles?

This is The Coffer Illusion.

Our brains are geared toward identifying objects & here, “pixels” are grouped to form edges & contours, shapes, & objects. The image is inherently ambiguous so there is no “right” grouping.

Rectangles dominate first for most people - including me, but keep staring & the image may flip to circles.

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril I see the circles when I focus on them, but in my peripheral vision I only see the rectangles.

Not sure why safari suddenly renders Mastodon advanced mode UI so poorly, I just accidentally boosted a post when tapping on the favourite button

I know this isn't a Mastodon bug because it's fine on Chrome and Firefox

@dansup It's working fine for me. Is it possible you have an extension that's interfering? Try turning off extensions if you're using them.

Do not ask a language model questions involving reasoning, factuality, or moral judgment. Language is a vehicle for those, but it is not the SOURCE of them. And there is an enormous amount of language in the public sphere that’s devoid of them—and that trained the models.

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@Cdespinosa When I was younger I remember reading theories that the human facility of cognition is identical to our facility of language. I think we're seeing evidence now disproving that idea.

@rubenbolling Also a big fan of Carroll and his books (and podcast). As a very rusty ex-physicist (dropped out halfway through grad school with an MA) I suspect the debate over interpretations of QM may be settled by increasingly larger "Schrödinger Cat States”: macroscopic objects put into quantum superposition.(e.g. https://apple.news/AZQwoWZiGSNCWR6faczustA). At some point either this will fail, or it will become undeniable that there's no limits to quantum superposition.

Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.

I can’t believe it. I went to use the PatientAccess app and suddenly, without much explanation, it wants me to CHOOSE and set up an authenticator app — making the service even harder to log in to than it already was. The NHS and its surrogates are so obsessed with security (far more than banks) to the extent they’re making their useless app, with almost zero functionality, practically unusable. Suppose I was in a panic to book an appointment? This is a huge senseless barrier to usability.

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@christineburns I haven't tried it recently but I believe when you're in such a situation, you can just long-press the QR code shown on the phone and it will “scan it" from the image itself, then offer to add it to Passwords.

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@christineburns That also works for any QR code, not just 2FA setup, I believe.
