HomeKit question: my smart thermostat lost its Wi-Fi connection. When I try to add it back after deleting it from Home, I'm told it's still IN Home. Thoughts? I have rebooted my Apple TV. Some other HomeKit devices also seem lost while others are working. Is there a way to reset the HomeKit hub other than restarting the Apple TV that would clear the state problem?

May have figured it out. The thermostat can connect only over 2.4 GHz to Wi-Fi. When you configure it via an iPhone app, there's a note that says to connect the iPhone only to 2.4 GHz…I have all my networks named identically, so that won't work. So I've created a 2.4 GHz guest network to test this theory.

Got it to connect to the manufacturer’s cloud over 2.4 GHz…but not to HomeKit. Baffling

techsuppork,

@glennf if it's on the guest network it won't see the homekit hub on your main network.

@techsuppork D'oh!

Thank you for everyone's help! I guess a router rebooted and the thermostat lost its 2.4 GHz connection. When I tried to reconfigure it, my iPhone was connected over 5 GHz (I have all my 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks named the same for roaming).

So even though it should pass the network name and password, I'm wondering if HomeKit passes the BSSID?! If so, that would explain it.

Solution was:

• guest 2.4 GHz unique name
• enable guest access to rest of network (for mDNS discovery for HomeKit)

chrismclay,

@glennf when I have similar problems, I change the name of the 5GHz network temporarily, that way everyone can still use the 2.4. Once the device is connecting again. I move the 5GHz name back to match. Then wait a year or so for something to fail.

@chrismclay This is smarty pants stuff. Thank you!

joesarsero,

It just shouldn’t be this hard Glenn.
I blame the manufacturers, not the users.

Almost every single day I need to troubleshoot a broken device in my home. Sometimes I just want to throw everything out.

I joke that if I get hit by a bus, my family would need to move home.

@joesarsero I've left detailed instructions

on how to implode the house

nathangrigg,

@glennf Is the Apple TV is the only HomeKit hub in your house? I once faced a similar issue and unplugged the Apple TV and three HomePods so that all hubs were offline, and then plugged them in one at a time.

@glennf@twit.social avatar

@nathangrigg It's only iPads, right? I power cycled the iPads. Do I need to power them down?

@glennf is it an Ecobee? If so, you have to go into the settings on the device and remove it from your home before you can add it (even if removed from capital-H-Home)

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@samerfarha Unfortunately, an Emerson. 100% reliable until today. I actually think the HomeKit ecosystem is the problem.

fr3aky,

@glennf i’ve solved similar problems by reseting the device(s) in question.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@fr3aky I am thinking about that. There's a power switch for the HVAC system—the thermostat is very hard to pull off its base on the wall.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@fr3aky Ah, that was good. I did find a way to power cycle at the main unit. Seeing if that works. Thank you!

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@fr3aky …and of course, no help! still shows up as "already added" even though remove from HomeKit, restarted hubs, etc.
