I have located the source of all my aches, ailments and illnesses: Work.

My husband says the world will keep turning if I don't spend 10+ hours a day writing.

I may have to test that theory.

DrAHM,

@Teri_Kanefield take care of yourself, Teri!

@DrAHM I'm fine, thanks.

I've been fascinated all week by the reaction to my blog post, much of which proves everything I've been saying about the outrage industry.

I keep wanting to get back to writing about more interesting legal issues, but the response to that blog post was so interesting I may write about that :)

@Teri_Kanefield @DrAHM: I still miss your fun with reading legal documents - especially since we've seen some doozies the past few days.

Not looking at outrage at all. I'm looking at the legal issues and arguments in the whole Cannon circus just to learn more about Smith's approach when faced with what's going on. Of course there are others doing the analysis like Jay Kuo and Joyce Vance, but I still appreciated your analyses in the past.

I'm glad you're taking care of yourself though, especially in the face of such vehemence from your last blog post.

@goodreedAJ @DrAHM

I understand. And those were fun and easy for me to do. If there is one thing I can do after years of appellate practice and writing books is go quickly through a legal doc and get the point. The kind of blog posts I plan to write (more like the topics I tackle in my books) are not as easy.

Also, I don't mind the vehemence at all. In fact, I'm enjoying analyzing it.

It's sort of fascinating. Some of the responses proved my point.

@Teri_Kanefield @DrAHM: Although you may enjoy analyzing it, it seems like you only need so much of that vehemence or you wouldn't have turned off comments. 🤔 Once induced, that rage response seems almost bottomless. I'm sure the volume of the response in such a short time gave you plenty to write about this weekend. Should be interesting reading. 🤓

@goodreedAJ @DrAHM

The problem with comments on my blog is that I have to moderate them. I have to read them all to make sure there isn't anything inapproriate. (I have a spam filter that gets rid of obvious junk)

On social media, I can scroll through and ignore stuff.

Ordinarily I get about 60 comments over a period of 4 days. I logged in Sunday morning to find more than 90 and some people wrote several paragraphs.

So part of it was time.

@goodreedAJ @DrAHM

I get better comments on Mastodon. The worst comments (most hyperpartisan and shrill) are on Threads and Post, even worse than Twitter (but that might be because I have so many people muted on Twitter LOL. Over the years, I was very free with the mute button. I muted thousands. I blocked MAGA and muted annoying lefties.)

So I may switch out my comment function on my blog for a like button and just read comments here.

@goodreedAJ@sfba.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @DrAHM: The only problem with not having comments on the blog itself is that it aces out those who aren't on social media (not everyone is) who want to participate earnestly, but I understand the tradeoffs.

I have both a Post account and a Threads account, but I never really look at them. I prefer Mastodon for social media, and I also do use Facebook. Unlike others who experience issues with Facebook though, I limit my posts to friends only, and I don't keep friends who are abusive. I may not always agree with them all, but at least they aren't capricious or cruel. And when there are disagreements, they tend to be very civil discussions. The only times I've seen any real nastiness is occasionally when commenting on somebody else's post.

As for X, I've locked that account down so that the only people who can even see me are the ones I follow directly, and I don't spend any significant time there anymore. The interface itself has really degraded over time becoming very slow and glitchy.

@goodreedAJ @DrAHM

That is actually a good point.

It really aces out people not on Mastodon. MOre specifically, it aces out the people I haven't muted LOL.

I don't know if my blog really needs to be a place for discussion.

socialmedia writing counts as double-time, of course

A healthy balance between work and play will do wonders.

Gozo,

@Teri_Kanefield It can be surprisingly easy to get sucked into too much effort and focus and work, on particularly upsetting issues, and then receive an excess of praise and compliments for this, and shoulder the burden with a greater weight.

It's not my business to advise others (I'm retired!), but from the outside, it has sounded like the mantle of responsibility has been taking its toll. So:

Thank you for all your work. It Matters.
