Hey new people! 👋

A guide to some Fediverse terms:

Toot = Post (named after the Mastodon mascot, in theory)

Favourite = Like (there's a separate Bookmark function if you really want to keep track of posts)

Boost = Re-Tweet, shares a post with your followers

Instance = Server = The site you signed up on, each server is independent

Birdsite = Hellsite = Twitter

Fediverse = This place you're on right now, reading this. Mastodon is one kind of server on here, but there are many other types.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. CW = Content Warning, where the content of a post is hidden underneath a descriptive warning that you can click on to reveal the post.

This can be used for anything where people might be interested but they might not want to read it right now, for example something controversial or stressful or something spoiler-filled. Different people have different ideas of when their use is appropriate.

You can set CWs to always open automatically in your settings if you don't like seeing them.

video_manager,
@video_manager@mstdn.social avatar

@feditips
I call them "Consent Wrappers" - it's not that the content is "bad" and needs a "warning"...

...it's affirmative consent to view the content.

Quenby,

@video_manager @feditips I really like this and it's how I use them too. Just giving a heads up for what to expect.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Quenby @video_manager

Yeah, exactly!

shadowsminder,

@feditips

I've seen CW = Content Wrapper. That makes the most sense to me with how the feature works.

Leisureguy,

@feditips It might be pointed out that "CW" can also be viewed as "Content Wrapper" enabling one to post a headline and hide the body from those not interested — e.g., a CW of "Interesting Go Problem" enables those with no knowledge of or interest in the (fascinating) game of Go to skip the post easily.

chamomile,
@chamomile@furry.engineer avatar

@feditips Also, "mh" is a common shorthand for "mental health" CWs, with + or - to indicate if it's a positive/negative tone.

busycrying,

@feditips what’s the classification name to group Mastodon, Akkoma, Pixelfed, Calckey and the likes of it?

chebra,
@chebra@mstdn.io avatar

@feditips

Fediverse = imagine if you could use your twitter account to talk to people on facebook and write comments on youtube. Yes, that's what we've had here on fediverse for some years now.

Js_wordsmith,

@feditips isn’t the protocol to boost more than like too?

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Js_wordsmith

I'm not sure what you mean?

Boost shares posts with your followers, and it also makes the post appear higher in the trending posts list.

Js_wordsmith,

@feditips I saw on another instance that they recommending boosting instead of favoriting to help promote others content. I feel like I see more boosts than favs myself. But I do both anyway lol

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Js_wordsmith

Yeah, boosts are what make a post be more widely seen because there's no algorithm on here.

Favourites are mainly to just let the person know you liked their post.

Wuzzy,
@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social avatar

@feditips Mastodon is not a server.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Wuzzy

It's one kind of server (or technically one kind of instance).

jamieannmason,
@jamieannmason@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips

Thank you!!! This is good info for someone still leaning!!

CDeorum,

@feditips Community rules = just guidelines if you’re a tankie or “anarchist”.

Padjo,

@feditips why not actually use these words in the app?

    Yeah, but he's just talking about the software.

    I'm talking about the culture, about what people say on here. Lots of people talk about toots.

    @garry

    I think if something is used for years in tech, it can take on a life of its own just as a cultural thing?

    A lot of people still talk about phones being "off the hook" for example, but phones haven't had hooks since the 1930s.

    Deus,
    @Deus@charcha.cc avatar

    Toot means ‘fart’ where I come from - to make children laugh. No way will I ever use that. However fancy it may sound, it’s a ‘post’, call it that.

    “Why do people have to change the UI language and reinvent the wheel that people have spent the past 30 years getting themselves familiarized with? If it’s a server, call it a server. Don’t call it an instance. Instead of calling it a magazine, call it a sub or forum or something. Why reinvent the wheel? I am all for this decentralization movement, but as long as it’s led by people who have zero wisdom and sensitivity in UX, it’s gonna be a long while before new platforms can replace existing ones.”

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @Deus

    It's just a bit of fun, and partly a pun based on the Mastodon mascot. You don't have to use it at all, I just wanted to explain it for people who might be wondering :)

    "Instance" used to be the most common term on here, as "server" technically means something else, but server got officially adopted as a more familiar word for non-techies.

    Deus,
    @Deus@charcha.cc avatar

    ‘Instance’ is also confusing for those in tech. I also work in tech and I had to spend a good amount of time figure it out after watching that “What is Mastodon?” video - “Oh they call a ‘server’ or a ‘website’ an ‘instance’ here.” Now think of how confusing it might get for me to onboard my granny or family members to the Fediverse.

    jorgecandeias,
    @jorgecandeias@mastodon.social avatar

    @feditips Hang on. Folks tell me the toot thing was to be deprecated. Some folks are embarrassed with the kiddy connotations, apparently. My instance replaced the "toot" button with a "publish" button, although my mobile app still uses toot. What gives?

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @jorgecandeias

    The software deprecated the button label, but people are not software. People still talk about toots because that's what they were officially called on here for many years, and it's a fun little quirk :)

    chloetse,

    @feditips
    I will forever use "toot" 💨. I don't care what anyone else say. Even if I were to be the only one left using "toot", I will still be using it to keep tooting alive!

    Also another suggestion that I have seen pop up is Alien Site=Reddit

    Jyoti,
    @Jyoti@mas.to avatar

    @chloetse @feditips

    WE'RE ALL TOOTERS

    Leisureguy,

    @feditips My understanding is that the term "toot" for a post is obsolete:

    https://gizmodo.com/mastodon-toot-retired-twitter-tweet-equivalent-1849786221

    Of course, some resist changes in nomenclature, as we see in current politics.

    therionofthebeast,

    @feditips I know I’m new here, but I will die before I use “toot”
    unironically.

    @imagictony

    No, it's just one type. There are dozens of different server types on the Fediverse, but they talk to each other seamlessly with a common standard so you may not be aware of this when you interact with people.

    For example @Iancylkowski is a Pixelfed account and isn't running Mastodon software at all, but you can follow it from Mastodon and interact with its posts.

    rauschma,
    @rauschma@fosstodon.org avatar

    @feditips “Toot” seems to be on its way out though(?) At least in the Mastodon UI. Personally, I welcome that, I have always called them “posts”.

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @rauschma

    You can use both terms, I'm just mentioning "toot" because it's more difficult to understand if you're new here :)

    Officially it's not used on the current Mastodon software, but it's been used for years and is part of the culture here so it's still used frequently.

    Also some third party apps use the term such as Toot! and Tooot and there's a desktop one called Toot (all three totally unconnected to each other 😁 ).

    jarulf,
    @jarulf@mstdn.social avatar

    @feditips maybe just add a note that Toot is an older / legacy / deprecated term?

    Oh, and thanks for everything you do to help everyone.

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @jarulf

    It's not deprecated if people continue to use it. The software is not the culture.

    jarulf,
    @jarulf@mstdn.social avatar

    @feditips well, true enough. Some other description then.

    5ciFiGirl,
    @5ciFiGirl@starbase80.wtf avatar

    @jarulf @feditips

    Maybe just mention that it's one of the terms? 🤷‍♀️

    jarulf,
    @jarulf@mstdn.social avatar

    @5ciFiGirl @feditips which is what I meant 😃

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @jarulf @5ciFiGirl

    I have one spare character in the post :/

    If it's okay I'll leave it for the moment. I'm sure people will get that post is another word for it :)

    jarulf,
    @jarulf@mstdn.social avatar

    @feditips @5ciFiGirl ha, I didn't even consider the character limit. It is probably pretty clear, after all.

    rauschma,
    @rauschma@fosstodon.org avatar

    @feditips Makes sense!

    MrClon,

    @feditips new wave of migration?

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @MrClon

    Seen a lot of new people recently, so thought would be a good idea to get them up to speed on weird words they've seen.

    Looks like Reddit's implosion and various other factors have contributed.

    Artemis_Lynn,

    @feditips @MrClon I signed up in November when I expected Twitter to implode. Then it didn’t. I continued using Twitter and didn’t log in to Mastodon. I got email warning me my account would be closed if I didn’t log on. So I did. Then I got another email saying I hadn’t logged in since November and my account would be closed. So I logged in again. This time I’m trying to make really sure it knows I logged in.

    I suspect there are many of us hitting that 7 month mark and getting similar emails.

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @Artemis_Lynn @MrClon

    Ahaa... thanks for that, could well be explanation! I thought it was just Reddit, but some newbies had nothing to do with Reddit.

    Sibshops,
    @Sibshops@mstdn.games avatar

    @feditips I wish they would rename favorite to like.

    RadicalRuss,

    @feditips And my own idiosyncratic term:

    Twoot: a screenshot of a in a .

    klausman,
    @klausman@mas.to avatar

    @feditips One addendum: since favoriting something is visible to the person whose post you favorited, it is sometimes also used as "I have seen this and I agree/approve of the intent, but didn't want to spam you with a content-less "I agree!" reply.

    alan,

    @feditips Toot actually comes from Tommy Tallarico HBomberguy who promised to contribute to the mastodon patreon for life if that change was made.

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @alan

    HBomberguy suggested it originally, yes.

    jlundell,

    @feditips Re-Toot, surely

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @jlundell

    It has never really been called that for some reason (shrug)

    thisismissem,
    @thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

    @feditips a post on mastodon hasn't been called a "toot" for a long time now..

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @thisismissem

    People still use the term, whatever Eugen decides to do with the software.

    rysiek, (edited )
    @rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

    @feditips @thisismissem I, for one, will continue using that term, because to me it's a term of endearment.

    Toot! :toot:

    WaterBrick,

    @thisismissem @feditips What is it called then? "Post on Mastodon" doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

    therionofthebeast,

    @WaterBrick @thisismissem @feditips Is simply “post” unacceptable?

    feditips,
    @feditips@mstdn.social avatar

    @therionofthebeast @WaterBrick @thisismissem

    Post is fine too!

    But "post" doesn't need any explanation, whereas "toot" may surprise new people.

    podkaynelives,

    @thisismissem @feditips I still see it used fairly regularly.

    chloetse,

    @thisismissem @feditips I think that depends on the server. I remember seeing one of the servers running a poll to see if they should keep "toot".

    bloodravenlib,
    @bloodravenlib@mas.to avatar

    @feditips

    Eli Cologne = the guy who is now owning and fucking up the birdsite.

    (I wish I had invented that term, but no, comes from a film).

    thisuser0494,

    @feditips Birdapp is a bit better don't you think, but that's what I use at least
