Buying a new car in 2024 is a goddamn privacy nightmare, part 3591 of an endless series: https://sherwood.news/tech/how-to-opt-out-of-the-privacy-nightmare-that-comes-factory-installed-in-new/

@evacide

Easy solution: ride a bicycle.

@evacide I had thought the network connection unavailable message meant that it didn't have the ability to report the data it was gathering either, but I guess not? Like I assumed that maybe installing the Honda app was the thing that enabled data sharing in the first place.

@complexmath That's been my assumption as well - which has driven me to NOT install it. I'm not aware of a cellular model being built into the car itself, but haven't dug very far into that assumption.

@davidseidl Same. I figured if the car had a cell connection, it would be touted in user-facing features like OnStar. And that's probably true. But Honda sure doesn't make any of this easy to understand. Which I guess is the point. I think I'm just going to stay the course for now, unless at some point I need to install a firmware update.

@davidseidl One related issue I did discover recently is that the KARR security systems which are typically preinstalled by dealers in the US now have GPS tracking, along with a number of related cloud-based features. So that's a concern too.

@complexmath That was one reason I declined to buy the Toyota that was the primary contender vs. my Honda. The dealer insisted on installing an anti-theft device whether I wanted it or not, wanted to charge me for it, and wouldn't change that even for a cash purchase.

@evacide I fear the replies of "glad I've still got my old XYZ car" don't scale very well. Plus, of course, I assume they're still carrying their privacy-invading phones.

All this shit needs to be legislated into oblivion.

@evacide There are reasons I'm still driving a 20-year-old Saturn. Ok, the main reason is that I'm cheap. I also don't drive that often. But the nightmare prospect of finding a car that isn't spying on me ranks way up there.

one of the amusing benefits of a (now only used) BMW i3 is that they used the 3G network for all it's "remote" and that network has been turned off now so it physically can't share. 🤷‍♀️

not all model years but upto, iirc 2017 or 2018 before they got upgraded
