We can (could have?) pointed the room alias to a new room if you created one with the right permissions. support@matrix.org is the right place for this sort of support request (although we are very overstretched atm).
@pixelfed you should know better than to rely on a channel created by someone else on a platform controlled by someone else.
@matrix at least give a very reasonable and generous response here, but really you should be using your own platform.
Either self host matrix, or because it's a project; you should be using a forum (Discourse or whatever) so conversations are searchable and archivable.
Discord is a cop out, it is lazy and shows you don't care about your community; just what is easier for you and the members that happen to already use Discord. And no, that is not everyone.
@nigel your statement is lazy. Dude has a million projects and is one of the hardest working people on fedi. So tf what if he wants to use something that is easier, more user friendly and more reliable. Go somewhere else with your unhelpful and lazy ass takes.
No, his actions are lazy, as is blaming someone else for it when he clearly didn't have email set up correctly, and sent a single email only.
He doesn't have to have that many unfinished projects, that is his own choice.
And it's no more difficult to spin a new matrix channel than to do the same in Discord, that's a lot of horse shit and is just a "protest" statement which is a cheap shot. He should know better.
@pixelfed Honestly, that sucks, and I’m sorry you had to deal with that. While I’m happy to see FOSS projects use FOSS comm tools as part of their infrastructure, I would never criticize someone for not using that.
At the end of the day, people use what tools are most comfortable for them. Matrix / Element are cool, but they’re far from seamless, and have a long way to go when it comes to usability.
Don’t let people push you around for embracing what works best for you. They may as well dictate what you wear, and what you eat.

It is actually Matrix's technical fault, albeit itself a complicated issue (since we're in a federated environment). Anyways, Josh (for matrix.org) actually contacted dansup early on to resolve tge issue, but I suppose communication broke down somewhere.
@pixelfed So glad to see y'all chose Discord. While I know so many dislike it because it's not a Fediverse app or whatever else, it's truly one of the best places to host a community like this with so many options and features that most of these places actually don't have or won't have for a long time to come!

Discord is a company that not only has a (shoddy) centralized service but also violates its users privacy (e.g. they extracted system usage data in the past even with options for that turned off) additionally to the obvious issues with being proprietary. They literally offer nothing of value beyond "ease of use" (if you only use their service (if you are fine with their limited feature set (if you are fine with their bugs)))
@the_moep Everyone has their own opinion of course. No company is GREAT or does no wrong, so don't make it out to be just Discord that does these things.
People use what they want and need. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to use it. It's pretty simple.
I use it for work, and will continue to use it for work, regardless of what the haters or non-users say.

Oh and that completely ignores that their whole company is running at a loss and they still have not managed to find a strategy to finance the service... meaning that in the end they will have to sell user data (if they don't already).
@cliffwade Please explain their business model to me then and provide info on how they are profitable. Because right now they are deploying functions to use their user base as advertisement among their friend-groups (their new game streaming bounty system) which is basically already selling their user data (just not directly of course, but that doesn't matter. They are making profit by changing user behaviour instead of selling anything)

I am clearly talking about their prospect of doing so if they don't find a way of generating profit in a different way. Which their trajectory is currently looking like imo. If you don't think that it looks like it then that's fine and I'm interested in why you think that. This is a discussion about the theoretical future of Discord after all.
@cliffwade Also this topic is something that needs to be discussed before it actually happens, because once they do it it will be too late as they already have all the data. So we need to either stop them from doing it or stop giving them data... ignoring it until it's too late just because it's not already happening right now is just naive. We've seen this pattern plenty of times with companies propped up by venture capital. They need to turn a profit elentually no matter how.

You're telling me to not make stuff up, yet you're speculating, assuming, accusing them of something in the future that you don't know if it'll happen again. It's simply a guessing game on your behalf.
As stated, I'm done here. If you don't like their product, then don't use it and move on. It's truly that simple.

@cliffwade I am not sure they will, I am saying it's a possibility as lots of other companies offering services without any business model just with venture capital have gone that path once they needed to be profitable. And that we need do stop it from happening do Discord or if we can't do that stop people from feeding it more data.
The only fact in my statements is that other companies already went that route and it's not unrealistic to assume the same could happen.

I'm a firm believer that they won't, mainly because I've been with them from day one basically and see how they do things. While yes, somethings they do I don't agree with, but I don't see them stooping to selling data. I don't say a company will do that just because I don't like them or don't like what they do. Just ignorant to do so.
@stemy@pixelfed I was going to comment the same thing. I already rejecting discord's new ToC since they made it so you couldn't sue them. So they basically can do whatever they want with your data now.
@Im_Dylan@stemy@pixelfed This was also exactly my thought after I read their latest policy/tos changes. That's an unacceptable piece of gibberish. Besides, relaying or making ourselves dependent on something that does not belong to us, especially in the terms of contact with the support/customers is a very bad idea. Especially when lots of other, much better and way more friendly solutions are freely available.
@Mrfunkedude The channel was originally created by someone else and I was added as admin through Freenode and over time for whatever reason I was stripped of my admin powers.
It's not really a dramatic story, I don't have time to wait for it to be fixed, as someone reached out months ago from Matrix side, nothing was ever done.
