ok yeah after using the new sonos app for about half a day, i can definitively say it’s way worse than the old one lol. remember that design is more than making it look pretty. remember that design includes functionality. remember that bad implementation breaks good design

want to switch apps? hope you’re feeling lucky

@exchgr a sonos using friend pointed out that the basis of their success is they're an "it's simple and just works" solution for people that don't want to gearhead their audio. It's a doubly bad release for that kind of company

I guess it also broke a few key integrations

@mrcompletely oof yeah. can’t even reauthorize apple music. i get stuck on this

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@mrcompletely and that’s exactly what sonos is. pretty dang good speakers that just work

@mrcompletely (not that i even use it, but completely removing and re-adding seems to work)

@exchgr for a company like that this is extra troubling to anyone in the biz bc it suggests product management has lost the plot. You don't really worry until they've borked a few in a row, but it's kind of a yellow alert

@mrcompletely yeah, i’m really hoping they release a lot of bug fixes very soon

@exchgr Did they actually fix the horrible thing where playing Apple Music through the app is way too loud? If not I'll just carry on Airplay'ing anyway.

(Sonos say it's an Apple Problem, but I don't see why they won't work around it)

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@mikebroberts oh i highly doubt it. my understanding is it’s a sonos system thing (i.e. the software installed on the speakers) and the app is just a glorified controller. i also think apple makes its own sonos integration, so in that sense, it would be up to apple. but given apple music’s track record, i doubt it’ll ever be fixed. i was surprised they even made normalization work recently—but only for apple music, not for cloud music library 🤦🏻‍♀️

@mikebroberts also yeah, i use airplay 99% of the time. if sonos didn’t have airplay or bluetooth, i would’ve ditched it long ago. and its historical lack of these inputs is what prevented me from buying sonos earlier than ~2020.
