Is there such thing as a small, rugged GoPro-style device that’s more oriented towards still photos? I love the size and form factor and ruggedness of the GoPro/insta360/etc, but don’t really want to shoot (or edit) much if any video.

@jacob There are rugged Ricoh and Olympus cameras but they aren’t GoPro-sized. They are more like those point-and-shoot cameras from the 2000s.

@ak it's weird that these cameras basically haven't improved since the early 2000s. They're still roughly the same size, image quality, weight, etc.

@jacob @ak yeah .. I used to have a couple like that for climbing and they were great ... if I could buy one like it with better sensors / lenses I certainly would (and bonus points if it got even smaller).

@jacob What are your issues with the GoPro for still photography? Focal length/field of view of pictures? Sensor quality? Something else?

jacob,

@chrisjrn mostly (a) it's expensive, I assume part of that is because of all the (impressive but useless to me) work they put into video quality and (b) yeah the focal length/FOV isn't great for most stills

@jacob I'd have suggested going for a micro four-thirds camera and attaching a pancake (ultra low-profile, fixed focus) lens and separate water/shockproof casing, but that only solves problem (b).

Since there's a wirecutter page, I'd trust their recommendation, particularly since they ended up with an Olympus body as their recommendation, which I'd have leant towards.

@jacob I swear I just saw an article about something like that, let me see if I can find it again…

@jacob ah, the article I was thinking of was for the Osmo pocket 3, which isn’t really for stills. What about something like from the Fujifilm X100 line? Not sure if that would count as rugged (though I’ve been very happy with larger Fujifilm cameras for wildlife photography), or if a prime lens camera would suit your needs.

@joshourisman I want something I can rappel down waterfalls with :) So I think IP67 as a minimum, which I think rules out any of the normal swappable lens systems unfortunately.
