Great moments in bar frugality.

I was re-watching Black Sails and noticed a very subtle recurring gag that I had missed the first time around. When Eleanor, the inexplicably clean fence and barkeep, is doing her morning walk-and-talk around the bar,...

Is there such thing as a small, rugged GoPro-style device that’s more oriented towards still photos? I love the size and form factor and ruggedness of the GoPro/insta360/etc, but don’t really want to shoot (or edit) much if any video.

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@jacob There are rugged Ricoh and Olympus cameras but they aren’t GoPro-sized. They are more like those point-and-shoot cameras from the 2000s.

ugh, I’m shopping for a new macOS mail client, I need:

  • multiple fastmail / imap / gmail accounts
  • multiple aliases per account
  • modifier-less keyboard commands
  • must NOT use a third-party server for ANYTHING (rules out Spark)
  • must have an option to disable remote images
  • sort/view by sender & thread
  • I have a very high bar for subscription fees; Edison/Canary/Newton don’t cut it

I’ve been doing email since 1994, my favorite clients have been Claris Em@iler, Mutt, Spark, & Sparrow

ak,

@mattly Hmm. Vivaldi Mail?

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@mattly Mail is integrated into the browser but maybe you could change how it opens links. @jon or @Vivaldi would be able to answer that, or field a feature request.

just enabled HDR edit mode in lightroom for the first time and i feel like i’m seeing a new dimension. what have i been missing all this time

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@exchgr Yeah, I was wondering about that. Maybe HDR is good for prints? It just can’t really be the default yet if you want to post them for viewing on anything other than your own device.

once an alaska economist on twitter unfollowed me because I disagreed that “construct more houses” was the only way out of this housing crisis and suggested we may have some regulatory leverage as well

@seachanger When I was in Craig, AK recently I was surprised how many AirBnBs there were because... uh it's Craig. Honestly it was really nice to be able to find something for our group to use to regroup and clean off before heading back to civilization but it definitely seemed like an odd situation for the local housing market.

also, small companies shouldn’t even think about microservices or monorepos https://hachyderm.io/@collinsworth/112278036631211494

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@exchgr What do you think is the best way for a small team to handle async work (batch processing and task queues) without going the (micro)service route?

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@exchgr I think the path that leads to monorepo tooling being added to a relatively simple app is that people will often fork out worker services into separate apps with their own package manifests, and then want to bring them together later to share business logic. In that case I guess an alternative to creating a multi-root monorepo would be to merge the package management and build systems and just have multiple service entrypoints that can be started independently.

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@exchgr Yeah, I agree with that. It's important to consider how to scale without going crazy with operational complexity.

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@joy Yeah. I’ve heard people say they correlate location data from people that are close together but like… the app doesn’t even have location permission and we barely even crossed paths except for a brief conversation. I wonder if they scrape EXIF geodata from your camera roll if you give them access to it.

I’ve had an amazing baklava and other middle eastern desserts week since I last lived in and hung out in Dubai / Syria / Turkey 15 years ago.

A friend made wonderful homemade baklava for iftar just before Eid, an old friend gave me a box of marzipan from Cemilzade (Istanbul), and I’ve been nibbling on the baklava and Turkish delight from Simurgh.

I almost never do dessert on this side of the world as I find stuff impossibly sweet over here, so it feels like a wonderful surprise

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte @petrillic the platonic American dessert has to involve ice cream imo. Pie and ice cream, ice cream sundaes, ice cream cake, brownies with ice cream. Temperature and texture are important. A lot of nut toppings, hot syrups, etc.

I would appreciate the ‘side hustle bros’ more if they did interesting businesses but all they do is buy up shit (Fuji X100VI) so there’s a shortage, then add a $500-1000 markup ahahahhaa worst timeline

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte 🤨is that why there’s a shortage of those??

I have to admit, I am obsessed with the idea of brand allegiance. It's no different (from what I'm understanding) from a kind of corporate nationalism. By buying into something and extending your worth by building an association to a faceless, non-accountable and inherently capitalist entity, what do you gain in return?

It's not protection: companies will and routinely dump and violate its fans/stans/soliders for profit.

What is it?
