The Alien and Sedition Acts?

Yeah, 'left-wing' at the time meant 'republican' and 'right-wing' 'monarchist', but both parties were generally fine with the franchise being limited to white male landowners and the establishment of religion in state government, with slavery and the African slave trade.

But mostly I'm being a pithy shit to mock people I see as ignorant of history.

@caffetiel they are ignorant, but it's also pedantic to mock people for being concerned about creeping fascism in this modern day and age just because there were precursors in the past

100%. That ignorance is both not their fault (well, for most. Some people have no excuse) and a contributing cause to the current decline. I just reserve the right to be bitter about it

@caffetiel I think your point would have been better made had you chosen a year in which fascism was in existence and developments in this country more strongly resembled it
