The Alien and Sedition Acts?

Yeah, 'left-wing' at the time meant 'republican' and 'right-wing' 'monarchist', but both parties were generally fine with the franchise being limited to white male landowners and the establishment of religion in state government, with slavery and the African slave trade.

But mostly I'm being a pithy shit to mock people I see as ignorant of history.

caffetiel,
@caffetiel@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@MLE_online

100%. That ignorance is both not their fault (well, for most. Some people have no excuse) and a contributing cause to the current decline. I just reserve the right to be bitter about it

There's an article in the local paper today about my city updating its municipal code to add some new things to its list of activities banned in public parks, like camping.

But the article also briefly mentions some other things that are also bafflingly banned in public parks here, like flying a kite or bringing your own BBQ.

The article gives no explanation for why these other activities were previously banned, and now I feel like I have to put on my reporter hat and start researching.

REMINDER FOR AMERICANS:

The US Constitution and common law are rooted in pre-18th century English legal jurisprudence and traditions.

And the "presidential immunity" bullshit is an attempt to rewind the clock to before 1649, when Parliament got fed up with the King's bullshit, put him on trial, and beheaded him.

Y'all: Trump wants to revive the divine right of kings.

You know who pulled the German equivalent of that stunt? Hitler.

(I will summarily block anyone who raises Godwin's law.)

If taxes on them worked they wouldn't've been able to buy the US after Roosevelt-era tax policy.

So we have to conclude that taxes aren't enough.

an utterly catastrophic number, mind. We've already lost +1.5°. Democracy in the US and UK are at best walking corpses, at worst the illusions are just being dropped.

This is all shit working as intended. The only way to wreck it is to get very, very dirty. You don't seem willing to do that, so the only sane conclusion is that the cause is already lost.

caffetiel,
@caffetiel@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@Npars01 @photos_floues @cstross

'encouraging banks'? Ridiculous. To make them stop making money you need to undo centuries of established precedent that corps have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders. 'encouragement' is useless unless you're being coy about effective action.

We can see how well voluntary individual action is working.

The EPA is about to be completely destroyed by SCOTUS and a reelected Trump. There's no way to stop them peacefully before +2°C, which is still

Dreamt I stumbled across a YouTube channel of op-eds submitted to a variety of big name publications by a New York-based playwright.

Each op-ed had been given a confusing name; the one I picked was titled, "Relieve All Tinted Sins."

Upon playing, the video presented me with a static image that served as an illustration for the piece while the rich voice of a hired narrator read the piece aloud.

It opened with, "The Washington Post would not realize what it was at first. The humans, not for another year or five after that."

Then I woke up.

It was different, certainly, but it doesn't seem like less? The US funded the Taliban starting under Carter, and the CIA sold drugs and guns to send money to the fascist death squads of Nicaragua in the 80s.

What I know of Thatcher is domestic policy, but given the Rule Britannia! of it all and the nature of her cooperation with Reagan I wouldn't be surprised.

The Timber Industry Won Huge Cuts in the 1990s. Now It May Get Another Break Thanks to a Top Lawmaker.

As the cost of fighting increases, state Sen. Elizabeth Steiner has proposed a bill — developed in consultation with the industry — that would shift millions in expenses away from the biggest landowners and onto taxpayers.
