After over a decade, all my student loans are finally paid off! Hard to believe. All of the money from my workshops, books, etc went into that and now they're done 🥳🎉🥂

But seriously I want that money back

@Npars01 From my experience and observations, that certainly seems to be the case.

@jwcph thank you! And yes, it is a shame. Seems like they could have found better homes than a dumpster.

AbandonedAmerica,
@AbandonedAmerica@mastodon.social avatar

@Hasufin I agree. Pretty much all of the ones in the building were tossed in a dumpster, from what I heard.

AbandonedAmerica,
@AbandonedAmerica@mastodon.social avatar

@Hasufin part of the problem, I think, was the condition of the building. I think they wanted to get this place down as quickly as possible. I can't imagine it was in better shape after the fire. But I agree that something like that would have been terrific.

@DemocracySpot thank you! Which one is that, I didn't notice the water bottles?

@wa7iut that is one of the slowest websites I've ever seen! I can't get the gallery page to load but I did get to the one you linked to and wow does that look amazing

As promised, here's some photos for you of St Dunstan in the East. The main challenge was getting photos without tourist groups in the frame. Not so abandoned! @AbandonedAmerica

Does anyone have any advice at for helping my traumatised dog enjoy his walks more? Two years ago he was attacked by two escaped off-lead Rottweilers when we were out walking. It was terrifying. Now he barks at any dog, any size or breed.

We have tried dog school to desensitise him. Vet gave him anxiety tabs. Vet told us to take him down streets where he's unlikely to meet other dogs (ugly places with no trees or happy smells). We just want him to enjoy being outdoors again.

@CStamp Sorry I missed this - Charlie is doing okay but still gets afraid of walks and refuses them sometimes. @Godfrey642 I'm sorry your dog was attacked, I know how scary and awful that is. Not sure what helps to heal dogs psychologically except hopefully time and love

@CStamp @Godfrey642 thanks for your understanding, I just have been on a bit of a social media hiatus and don't log in as much. It's good for my sanity but not so great for keeping up with things I care about 😕

@AbandonedAmerica - Dude, your piece about Gary, Indiana on Atlas Obscura is phenomenal. Growing up outside Chicago, Gary was just a syncopated song and a smell when the wind came in hard from the east. I loved learning more about its history and decline.

@meercat0 they do. This wasn't that bad, for four years. I've seen people trash entire buildings over a single weekend.

The newest of my Decay Theory articles just went live on Atlas Obscura! In it, we explore the struggling town of Gary, Indiana to determine how a once-thriving city winds up with over 7,000 abandoned buildings. It's an important story, not just for Gary residents, but for many American towns facing similar issues.

Let me know what you think, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
