Every now and then, while trying to help some of the guys at work with tech issues, I’m reminded that what I consider to be very basic computer literacy is very much not.

Like, I’ve just had to explain to one guy that Chrome is a browser on his phone, and that’s how he should access the company’s HR portal. He’s in his 50s.

At least half of the people here don’t know how to save a website to their home screen.

It’s really eye opening.

We have a very, very basic HR portal website that doesn’t need a username, just a password. This is used for accident reporting and holiday booking.

It’s amazing how many people don’t/can’t use it because they “can’t log in”.

We’ve had it for a good five years. I set my password on day one, saved it in my Keychain, and have logged in 100% of the time since. I’ve literally never had a problem accessing it.

Last week I signed up to Bookbub to see if it would suggest any interesting books to me that are on sale.

It’s just suggested a romance novel called ‘Billionaire Lumberjack’, in which a woman is saved from being lost in the woods by the lumberjack of the title.

I won’t lie, I don’t think I’ll take them up on that offer.

Recorded and edited this one using the little Samson mic that I was talking about yesterday, and Logic Pro X on my Mac.

I don't know whether Ferrite on iPad does something when recording, but Logic picked up way more background hiss than I found yesterday. But then I remembered that I have Brusfri on my iPad, which is, as far as I'm concerned, magic.

In fact, I might post a supplemental AudioMo later to highlight just how good it is.

Goooood timezone, champions!

Been trying to record my , but between me not being happy with the quality of what I recorded, and my colleague not being out of the office for long enough, I’m having little success.

Also, there’s a ridiculous amount of lag between the keyboard attached to my Mac and my iPad, meaning it’s taken me ages to type this because I have to keep deleting extraneous characters and spaces.

Oh. Turns out that the lag issue was caused by my iPad not being wired to my Mac.

Huh, the bluetooth on the Mac is really bad. Might need a new Airport card.

Well, I’ve reset the Bluetooth controller on the Mac, forgotten all paired devices, and reset the SMC, and currently everything appears to be operating normally.

I’m using Universal Control wirelessly, and the only issues with character input are inherent to my shitty typing.

Also, Universal Control is working properly. Which is nice.

Had a look to see if it was possible to upgrade the wireless card in this Mac, and nope.

It is actually a replaceable card, so if it does go belly up it’s possible to put another one in, but there don’t appear to be any cards that support BT 5.0 that are compatible. From the 2018 mini onwards, the wireless stuff was soldered to the motherboard.

Also (sorry, I’m on a boring Mac mini thing this morning), this has reminded me of something I saw on YouTube.

A guy ran benchmark tests comparing a 2013 Trashcan Pro to a base-spec M1 mini, and found that the mini was better in almost every way.

But he noted that the 2018 mini is going for more on eBay than the M1 mini, and couldn’t figure it out.

It’s almost certainly because the RAM is replaceable in the 2018. 2014 wasn’t, 2018 was, M1 wasn’t. The 2018 has value because of this.

Just looked on eBay and found an 8/512 2018 mini for £340, and an 8/512 M1 mini for £400.

Honestly, it’s a hard call as to whether I’d spring the extra £60 for the M1, or £40 for a 16gb RAM upgrade in the 2018. I have 8gb RAM in the 2014 I’m currently using, and don’t really have a problem with it, but more is always better…

Of course, I don’t have £400 to spend on a Mac that I don’t really need, so it’s all academic.

@tvaziri This was a chat I had with my kid when he was 14 and asking whether he could watch something that was 18 rated.

I don’t remember what that movie was, but I think I was ok with it because of the context, but as I pointed out to him, something like Trainspotting was a HARD 18 partly because the subject matter is a million miles away from a regular 14yo’s understanding. A movie like Deadpool (which, to be fair was 15 over here) is a completely different beast.
