Hi, I'm Jesse. I live in Canada, I'm blind, and I love all things audio and Star Trek. Here to teach others about the disabled community where I can.

Um. At really low volume, my Echo just made a weird popping noise while answering a question. Someone explain to me why I don't like that at all.

JesseF8693,

@shawnak Today?

JesseF8693, to random

Hey @KuJoe
Any idea why I'm getting this error trying to search for someone with @MonaApp?

For anyone here who has experience with , do they only send hard toys or do they send a variety? I.e squeaky toys, electronic toys, etc?

JesseF8693, to StarTrek

Seeing some fan created I'm considering picking up my own again. This exchange keeps sticking in my head.
"Max... I don't want this assignment." Hendrix
"I know you don't. But you need it." McKul
"I beg your pardon?" Hendrix
"Growth, Doctor. Sometimes the only way to deal with our feelings is to face them. Use them. You're a healer. But right now, you need healing." McKul
What do you think? What kind of assignment is this?

JesseF8693, to webdev

Retreading some ground. Managed to work my way through the first lesson on again. I think this is where I'll call it for now.
I'm going to try to do one lesson per day, this time. No more. Hopefully, I don't get burned out.

JesseF8693,

@jscholes Really? That's quite interesting. It seems fine to me so far. Then again... I haven't looked at the website for resources, only the basic tutorials/lessons/exercises. Which do seem to make my head hurt a little. But it could just be not used to coding.

My Echo just now.
"right now it's -1 degrees celsius, but it feels like 18."
...What?!?!?!

“Ignite TV would like to use your location to determine if content is licensed for this area.”
To play video, we'll need to know where you are. Please go to device settings to turn on your location services and enable precise location.
Oh hell no. Confirmation of the province I'm in is one thing. But there's no reason in hell why I should have to expose my exact location. Licensing coming down to the address I'm at, or even the town, is pure bull.

JesseF8693,

@x0 That still doesn't mean they need my address. General location access should give a good enough idea, and in fact was good enough until now.

JesseF8693,

@lunar_fang I'm not paranoid, I'm just very selective. Rogers hasn't given me any reason to trust them with my information.

JesseF8693,

@x0 As I understand it Apple does this somehow. I was accessing Ignite on my iPhone.

Good afternoon to all, I hope your day has been a pleasant one. My new baby boy arived safely and I'm so excited. For those that didn't know I collect reborns. He's got sandy blond hair that looks lighter in the sunlight, bright blue eyes and he's such a chunk. He's very adorable. I've named him Jonah Malachi pronounced Malakai. He's about 23 inches long and weighs about 8-9 pounds. I'm hoping one day to start doing videos with them all. Just trying to put together my office/nursery before doing so. Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful day!

JesseF8693,

@LotusBlossom Reborns?

JesseF8693,

@LotusBlossom I'm not sure what that's in reference to.

Sometimes, being disabled can be exhausting. Aside from dealing with access barriers of all kinds, there's the social aspect. Most people don't seem to know how to interact with me, so when I'm, say, at college and waiting for my ride, people will just breeze past me.
The next time you see someone with a disability lounging around, stop and chat them up, even if it's just for a minute. We're different, but we're not scary, and trust me, it'll make their day.

I've lived in this house for eighteen years and only now discovered there's an outlet in the living room I never knew existed.

Well, as part of my search for part time work, I signed up for Indeed. Figured I have nothing to lose.
Let's see what happens.

JesseF8693, to random

And wouldn't you know it, asking about it seems to have jolted my notifications into working properly again.
My philosophy holds up once more.

JesseF8693, to random

Well this is unfortunate.
I disabled system haptics on my iPhone the other day for a brief period. Turned off all vibrations, and put my phone on silent.
In reactivating them all and taking my phone off silent however, I have no notification haptics and no notification sounds, for the most part.
One will play in a blue moon, but otherwise, I'm missing most notifications entirely because there's no feedback.
Does anyone have a clue what this is?

FreakyFwoof, to Mac

This is a notification from #MicrosoftTeams on #Mac that just... utterly made me stop in my tracks, not because of the tab key, but because of the message itself... A company that touts it's so-called #accessibility has the following to say, copied directly from #VoiceOver:

'Tab viewer. You may not be able to use your keyboard to return to Microsoft Teams after entering the following area. Press tab to continue to the viewer. Entering Tab Topics of app Help tab panel'

JesseF8693,

@FreakyFwoof @rlegowski1 Virtue signalling, most likely. All corporations do it when it's easier than putting forth actual effort.

JesseF8693, to tv

The stupidity of having that still relies on pointing a remote control at the cable box instead of letting the remote control work over the internet too feels astounding to me. Sure it might require more energy, but that's why you make the remote control rechargeable.

JesseF8693,

@lunar_fang My Apple TV doesn't seem to have this issue, but maybe I'm just lucky.

JesseF8693, to accessibility

With all the new folks joining here, I thought I should lay out a couple guiding posts for #AltText. I hope it will give everyone something to consider going forward, and I strongly encourage everyone to use this tool. It engages those like me, who have been shut out of entire conversations in the past because we couldn't follow along due to an absence of described images.
#A11y #Advocacy

JesseF8693,

@mcfrontrun The trouble with adding extra to is that in an ironic way, you're then potentially giving those who might not look at it the lesser experience as they can only see what the image is, and not the joke it might be trying to make.
For me personally, I'm alright with descriptions of abstract art describing what the artist is trying to convey on top of what the image might look like.

JesseF8693,

@mcfrontrun Sorry, this reply slipped through the cracks. In most cases, the emoji has a programmed word based equivalent, based off the unicode standard. Custom Mastodon emojis don't, though. They essentially read as blank. Silent.
