Are you working at an manufacturer or are creating profiles for a MNO/MVNO? for decades, a lot of the #FOSSI worked on has been decades behind bleeding edge technology. Recently, I'm involved in FOSS implementing GSMA SGP.32 IoT #eSIM infrastructure. That's before there are even any production deployments at all, before there are even any proprietary implementations out there. Exciting!

@OverBoing @1000millimeter das Netz regelt kontinuierlich die Sendeleistung (power control loop) eines Telefons. Auch alte GSM-Geraete mit maximaler Leistung von 8W werden demnach entspechend heruntergeregelt.

@1000millimeter @OverBoing ein Siemens P1 ist ein Phase1 Geraet, dort ist der numerisch maximale power control wert (== minimale sendeleistung, auf die heruntergeregelt werden kann) 15. Das entspricht 13 dBm +/- 3dB. Siehe auch https://osmocom.org/issues/6459 wo wir in Osmocom da gerade einen bug mit alten Telefonen haben.

@1000millimeter @OverBoing RACH-Aussendungen werden mit niedriger sendeleistung angefangen und dann bei wiederholungen mit erhoehter leistung. Die zweite Frage ist nicht simpel zu beantworten, weil da ganz viele Faktoren eine Rolle spielen; Der RR layer, die diversen Parameter in den SYSTEM INFORMATION, cell reselection spec, ... - letztlich ist der Blick nur auf Sendeleistung im Uplink viel zu beschraenkt

@1000millimeter @OverBoing Ich bezweifle, dass irgendjemand jemals ein funktionierendes Funksystem mit mehreren Teilnehmern entwickelt hat, bei der jeder Teilnehmer zunaechst mi der vollen Leistung anfaengt. Das macht keinen Sinn, weil Du immer das Risiko hast, andere zu Stoeren (frequency reuse in umliegenden Zellen bei FDMA/TDMA systemen, bei CDMA sowiso). Ausserdem machst Du den AGC des Emfpaengers auf der anderen Seite "zu", von wegen Dynamikbereich und so.

@1000millimeter @OverBoing frueher, als es noch die Phasen gab, musste man explizite Fallunterscheidung auf der Netzwerkseite haben. Seit Phase2+ ist alles rueckwaertskompatibel. Damit heute Phase1-Telefone unterstuetzt werden braucht es immernoch diese Ausnahmebehandlung, und genau deren Fehlen fuehrt zu https://osmocom.org/issues/6461 oder https://osmocom.org/issues/6459

Some code related to "PFCP offloading" or "PFCP tunneling" has just appeared in mainline linux. Oddly enougn PFCP is not a tunneling protocol, and the code itself claims its not implementing PFCP. Trying to find out more about it: https://lists.openwall.net/netdev/2024/05/15/95 #linux #3gpp #telecom - if anyone knows more, I am very curious.

@kernellogger @pink @Bubu In case any of you are wondering, https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/ZkZ62F_iCCOf4nmM@nataraja/ is the latest follow-up on it. It really seems like there is a pfcp net-dev/udp_tunnel which doesn't do any tunneling and just exists so PFCP can be offloaded to a NIC. Feels wrong to me, architecturally.
