Exactly 20 years and 20 minutes ago, this happened.

A clip of the classic “Badgers Badgers” meme.

If Apple sticks to their declared intentions, web devs outside the EU won’t be able to test their sites/webapps/whatever against the non-WebKit iOS browsers that will exist in the EU.

So, get ready for aggressive browser sniffing and “best viewed in/please switch to” badges making a comeback, because those are easy responses to this. Not good responses, at all, but humans are nothing if not lazy.

This week I’m messing about with scroll-linked animations, and I’m having trouble figuring out a way to do a specific pattern. Easier to show it than to describe it, but I’ll try: The animation starts in its timeline according to how much of the element has been revealed, and proceeds from there to 100% as the end of the element approaches the view. In effect, “the furthest point in the element you can see is this much from the beginning of the element.” Any clever clogs care to cogitate?

🖨️ I just published ~3500 words on my journey to understanding and appreciating web components. It has lots of example code more or less straight from production, interactive CodePen embeds, Shadow DOM shade, an <aside> that’s actually an aside, the works. Share and enjoy! https://meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/2023/11/01/blinded-by-the-light-dom/

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, the word “grok” has always grated on my nerves for no reason I can adequately articulate. Same with “tricksy”, while I’m at it. Just nails on a chalkboard.

So, what word do you wish some author had never forced into existence?

I’ve been fiddling with anchored positioning as a way to do sidenotes (Tufte-style footnotes, if you like) and it seems to me this is entirely possible except I don’t see a way to get anchored-position elements with different anchors to avoid overlapping each other when their anchors are close together. I could use hover/focus tricks to let the reader disambiguate them, but I’d rather just have them avoid overlapping entirely.

A groundbreaker, a force of nature, a pioneer, a friend. We could make each other laugh and cry and laugh until we cried. Once we randomly met Little Richard in a hotel lobby. She shaped more of today’s web than you can imagine, unless you were there. There were none like her, and never will be again. Godspeed, Mols.

I know I have very little ground on which to comment on the beauty of a typeface, but this variable font is SO GOOD and I really wish I’d found it before “CSS: The Definitive Guide, 5th Edition” published a month back, because it would have been perfect for the examples in the Fonts chapter.

Try out all the features and variability of Elstob at https://psb1558.github.io/Elstob-font/, which also links to a Github repository where you can get it.

Kat and I were married 25 years ago today.

There is no way we could have imagined what lay ahead for us, but we somehow made it through and we still lean on each other, hold each other up, try to look out for each other. We aren’t perfect at it, nobody is, but we try.

There are many things I wish had gone differently, but our partnership isn’t one of them. And now it’s an entire generation old. Incredible.

Thank you, Kat. You’re amazing.

I’ve followed up yesterday’s filtering toot with a more detailed blog post, with examples, which I hope makes more clear what I’m after (if not why). And it includes a link to a Codepen for any helpers to fork and edit! https://meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/2023/12/21/pixelating-live-with-svg/

Many of us are familiar with imposter syndrome, but is there a similar term for having the persistent feeling that you’re letting the rest of your team/workplace down by not doing enough, no matter how much others in your team/workplace make it clear you’re doing (more than) enough?

New question: is there a way to get to show all the posts in a given query on a single page from the URL query string, without having to build a custom template for it, or otherwise modify template files on the server?

For example, something I could add to the end of the URL https://meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/category/tech/grid/?order=asc in order to get all of my Grid posts on a single page that I could print or PDF-ize or just run through in a single scroll. I’ve reviewed the list of query vars and none seem applicable.

Today I found out “Liquid Death” (https://liquiddeath.com/collections/beverages) is not, as I had naturally assumed, some kind of massively caffeinated and/or sugared energy drink. It’s just regular old water, in a metal can. Some varieties have flavoring, but it’s still just water. Still water. That’s it. And I cannot figure out how I should feel about this.

The tech industry continues to refuse to learn how to think like real, actual people when designing new features. Reddit, in the form of Reddit Recap, is merely the latest offender, though they do have the distinction of being nearly a decade behind Facebook in doing this. https://www.reddit.com/r/UXDesign/comments/18ctqjz/can_we_please_talk_about_the_user_experience_of/

(To be clear: not my post, not my grandmother. The only sympathy I’m due over this is for my failure to move any significant needles.)

I did this recently in JS and unusually, I’m sorry about it. Even given that I’m operating on an array and there can be occasional undefined (that is, missing array index) items, and I want to output a string result, surely there’s a better way to do this, right? Tell me.

UPDATED: Got it, thanks! (Check replies.)

let mask = [
 prevSet[a-1],prevSet[a],prevSet[a+1]
 ].map(
 (item)=>{
 if(typeof item === 'undefined') return 0;
 else return item;}
 ).join('');

Twitter learned, and Reddit is fast learning, that people are not addicted to the platform, they’re addicted to the community they found there. Ruin the community, and people will leave the platform. It really is that simple.

(Why so long without a meal? Let’s just say I’m confirmed to be polyp-free.)
