RARohde, to climate

This is getting ridiculous.

OISST provides a real-time daily index of ocean surface temperature (60 S - 60 N). For the last month it has been continuously reading higher than in any previous year and still shows no sign of settling.

Ruth_Mottram,

@RARohde or, by the looks of it, any date ever.... 😒

For those of you wondering what you are missing at bluesky, right now it is pretty much the media Twitteratti all running around like 10 year olds that had too much cake at someone’s birthday, giddy because they aren’t having to deal with Nazis and morons yet and blissfully unaware of the crash that is soon to come.

Ruth_Mottram,

@ct_bergstrom I'm trying to work out if this is positive or not?

I was reminded of this in a discussion just now with students talking about Rosetta Mission results: ESA commissioned this very impressive short scifi film for publicizing the Rosetta Mission, and it's definitely the most awesome/confusing way I've ever seen to advertise a real space mission!

https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Videos/2014/10/Ambition_the_film

Ruth_Mottram,

@markmccaughrean @sundogplanets @andrasgaspar I would love for there to be a full film of this...

Ruth_Mottram,
Ruth_Mottram,

@sundogplanets i really liked that film! But you're right..it was a bit confusing..

I was in physics at that time.
Rain fell. Next morning colleagues reported radiation measurements of the rain. Fellow student immediately pulled off his👖he’d worn in that rain. The physicists organized a meeting to inform the public. The ministry forbade the measurements. 1/2

I remember, in the days after we took shelter when rain started to drizzle.

Ruth_Mottram,

@rahmstorf and so little has changed somehow.
these kind of measurements are still important - as with the 2017 Ruthenium plume that crossed Europe, and basically always denied by Russia..

Still thinking about this article in : it's a bit counter-intuitive but Danes actually cycle 20% less than in 2014. The article is clear that it's not because we're getting lazy but because we don't invest enough in .

The Netherlands spends 5x per head each year than does.
Especially outside + on the edge of the big cities cycling becomes hard. Given has so many benefits from health to clean air to congestion it's a scandal

Ruth_Mottram,

@markmccaughrean @silberspur @berndandeweg TBF 90,000km.is a lot. I average about 2- 2,500km per year (mostly just riding around town)..

Ruth_Mottram,

@markmccaughrean @berndandeweg heh, I'll hold you to that! I think you're far fitter than I, You certainly ride further and faster!

Ruth_Mottram,

@markmccaughrean @berndandeweg yeah well 70 seems a bit young to me for ebikes, why not 80? 😜

Ruth_Mottram,

@markmccaughrean yeah I agree with that in general. It's not a perfect comparison, DK is afaik about 10% bigger than NL with only 1/3 the population so it's much less densely populated - that definitely doesn't help. But yeah. Nowhere near enough investment especially outside CPH/Aarhus the last few years. Also we're getting richer + cars are much cheaper than they were!

Ruth_Mottram,

@markmccaughrean @berndandeweg I think I have seen research that suggests people tend to go further on ebikes so they're not useless as a form of exercise? They're also very common here now. I'm saving ebikes till I'm too old and decrepit to ride my road bike...

I'm at the European Geosciences Union conference but watching a session online. Why?
Because it's about climate tipping points, and the room is so overfull that I can't get in.
Hasn't happened at any other session I saw this week so far.

Ruth_Mottram,

@rahmstorf would love to see a summary of session? I couldn't make it myself this year...

Ruth_Mottram,

@rahmstorf want to like this one extra much. I grew up far to the north of the nightingale's range but heard them in France on long summer exchanges. What an incredible song.

Denmark is a small, reasonably wealthy North European country that projects it's net 1990 emissions will have been cut by 49.8% in 2025 and by 63.1% in 2030.

A new report suggests all electricity + home heating will be net zero by 2025.

Impressive work.
One small cloud, it's not mentioned in the press release but I wonder how much of the "net" is going to be relying on burning wood pellets?

I agree with a lot in this brilliant piece by @kissane on +
"If we want more people to enjoy what we believe are the benefits of something like Mastodon, it’s on us to make it delicious and convenient and multi-textured and fun instead of trying to shame people into eating their soysage and unsalted soup.
I hope all of that is actually possible for Mastodon, because a lot of great people very much want it to become a more welcoming place"
