My advice about backend development:

Database operations are generally cheaper and quicker than doing things in-app.

The people who made your relational database system have probably already figured out an optimisation for whatever it is that you're attempting to do.

example: If you need to do something like fetching 20 different currency rates from a 3rd party for a plugin that needs to convert them, but only realistically need to convert between two of those, just use a wp_options key like 'myplugin_currency_rate_' . strtolower( $currency ) for each currency's base rate instead of mucking about with using a serialised array of every single currency and then iterating through that.

At this point, you’re less likely to be catastrophically owned by downloading a cracked copy of Windows Vista from a Russian torrent site than buying a new copy of Windows 11.

@guffo I fully agree. Windows 2000 was peak Windows.

@guffo now imagine W2K, but with WSL2 support.

@guffo I bet the NT kernel hasn't changed enough to make this an impossible feat.

@guffo Ever seen the Win11 fork they offer on Azure?

@toon those seem to be makeshift corsets?

really didn't do anyone any favours by making EVERYTHING a post and stuffing everything into the Posts table.

I don't know how they talked themselves into the idea that Media uploads are 'posts' but this is really bad architecture.

(Coming from someone trying to do some fancy migrating of media.)

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@syntaxseed I agree on all counts. This seems to be for the benefit of the WordPress.com systems rather than anything else. (I.e. not the community.)

Then there's the insistence on WP having write access to itself, how dependencies are managed and how it can't catch up with the newest PHP versions.

Ah

We’ve got another example of that legendary cooperation between state railways today in Köln

Where the Eurostar* stops at the platform is NOT shown on the screens (while for RE and ICE trains it is shown)

So Eurostar employs a person on the platform to tell passengers where to stand 🤦‍♂️

    • Eurostar is 55% SNCF, 18% SNCB
alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@jon Ah yes, the good-old way of throwing more employees at the problem instead of fixing the technical underpinnings of the issue.

Absolute jaw drop

Go to SNCF Grandes Lignes ticket office and ask why SNCF Connect cannot sell me tickets to Berlin any more

“C’est la faute de Deutsche Bahn!” the employee tells me

This is a flat lie

Deutsche Bahn provides this data still. The fault is with SNCF’s IT. And employees here are blaming Deutsche Bahn

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@jon @YimbyEarth it's rather common that those in charge of systems that consume APIs don't read the emails about any changes and deprecations. The change may have been announced a year ago without the SNCF reacting.

nixCraft, to random
@nixCraft@mastodon.social avatar

Why do so many people treat Excel as a database? 🤔

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@nixCraft because they need to get things done in an office environment without involving an external contractor or the IT department, which in turn is unfamiliar with or doesn't care about the task at hand and adds overhead that you can get away with.

It's the most popular functional programming environment for a reason — and people who use it don't even know it's programming!

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@nixCraft also, PowerBI and the JSON connector that's built into Excel is amazingly powerful in the right hands.

One of the things that the Stack Overflow brouhaha demonstrates is that it doesn’t matter if a service was founded by people trusted by the community (Atwood and Spolsky) and was broadly community-led. If it’s a VC-funded startup, they will sell out their users at some point.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@baldur Also, if your VC pitch deck contains a section about you as a person being in control of a large and important community project, then is it a community project?
