So, is the Rabbit R1 basically an app that has achieved physical form? 🤔

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan It’s a fun toy that po-faced tech reviewers have decided should be a grey $4.99 a month subscription app.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan A confession: I ordered one the day they became available back in early January, so my opinion’s definitely skewed! I just see it as a toy rather than an all-singing do everything device and it seems to do that from what I’ve seen so far but we’ll see when it arrives

@andyn A question: does the screen being colour make that much of an impact? I’ve an older Libra in the same form factor (an H2O); the newer one has modest improvements save for the colour screen. You don’t really highlight that too much… so presumably it’s not a mindblowing feature?

@andyn That’s helpful, thank you

Engagement metrics do not make you a good person.

@jake4480 Thanks!

There’s a psychology paper in how different people use the web and what it means about their personality. You’re very sociable and happy, for instance. I tend to be a little conservative but positive where I can. Is that who we are in real life? What is ‘real’ when both aspects are part of our personality?? And so on.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 It’s the face we present online, isn’t it? What I think I’m learning from is that if I go quiet online that's when things are bad for me. I don't have a joyful side to show, so I choose to show nothing.

I just got a text from FedEx about an item that’s just been shipped to me from California. I can only assume it’s my Rabbit R1 coming way earlier than expected. The things been pretty much panned, but it still looks like some fun tech and I love the design regardless.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@andyn You’re UK-based, right? Our R1s are coming directly from the factory in China so it’s probably not that I’m afraid.

The battle for attention https://archive.ph/Pgnry

@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 I’ve not had a chance to read that in full as yet… but something related.

A few years ago I did some market research for a medical device company. A big finding: stop making things that beep. Everything in hospitals beeps all the time. Medical staff had alarm fatigue - they just zoned out of something beeping or ringing because everything was beeping or ringing all the time. (1/2)

@robb @chriskirknielsen Hot take: I love Crackdown 1 too, but it’s a 3D platformer. It’s more like Mario than anything else.

Can you remember how Diddy Kong Racing was announced and released? It was like a two month window, which was totally unheard of at the time. That seemed like total magic.

WeblogPoMo2024 begins tomorrow. I am going to try and write 31 posts about 31 different songs. And even though that may not happen, at least I made a really fucking awesome playlist.

Obviously don't click that if you're sensitive to spoilers about my blog.

bendaubney,

@andyn I’d definitely be interested in how you get on with it. I’ve a few Kobos ranging from an old pocket one right up to a big notetaking one and love them.

This weekend I cleaned a fountain pen, degunked oil on my spinning wheel, swatched some inks, and wove in the ends of some socks I knit. Crafty maintenance isn’t the most fun in the world, but it’s necessary!

(Also, 10 years of oil buildup is NOT fun to clean. Never again will I wait that long.)

🛠️ Sunday: had a lie-in, went for coffee, pootled around some charity shops, now for a bit of plumbing DIY.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

Somehow managed to replace the flushing mechanism and the water refill mechanism in a toilet cistern without flooding the house, without needing three attempts, and not taking three hours.

Yes, this is my fourth time doing this over the past twenty years.
Yes, the previous three attempts had those three issues.

Progress!

@hl What’s the part? Is it something that’s a pain to install?

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl Oh that’s interesting. An LCD on the bottom of a hinged door that’s likely to go through quite significant heat fluctuations is bound to be problematic.

I LOVE the idea of a dishwasher that projects the remaining time left onto your floor for no reason though.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@sarajw @hl But… why as a projection into the floor?!

But then also: why not?

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl @sarajw Agreed. Internet funtimes it is.

(I bet you could output the data to a little webservice. That’d definitely be easier.)

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl @sarajw Same. There’s a stain on the living room ceiling from a few years back during a less successful plumbing job. It’s annoying but a total faff so has yet to be dealt with. Maybe one day.
