🛠️ Sunday: had a lie-in, went for coffee, pootled around some charity shops, now for a bit of plumbing DIY.

@robb At my first week in university, someone on my halls corridor decided to make beans on toast… by putting the bread and the beans in our communal toaster. No toaster for us all year from that point. :-(

☎️ Jealous of those who have meeting-free Fridays as a stare at my list of (currently) seven calls over the day. 5:30 can't come soon enough!

Got it!

It's a funny looking thing and might not be great for if I ever go climbing hills on my sportier bike - but I've not done that for a long time now. I'll keep the old one for that distant eventuality 😅

In case anyone wants to know, it's a medium Specialized Tone, heavily reduced at the moment, scores five stars in the Virginia Tech tests, has MIPS.

I appreciate your mirrorwork and getting that into the photo too.

Has anyone done a dance remix of keyboard typing sounds?

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@sarajw Not the same, but Trunk Records did release a 12” record of mechanical keyboard sounds!

While many restaurants provide varying vegan food options, trying to grab a quick snack from either a cafe or even a supermarket sandwich chiller is a massive challenge.

I took my family to the coast today and across the dizzying array of small cafes, supermarkets and cafe franchises, there was a frustrating lack of options.

Forget about buying anything fancy when even the basics are lacking.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan Interestingly we noticed the opposite problem this weekend.

All the poncy coffee shops we go to which used to offer skimmed milk now offer two or more milk alternatives but only full fat milk.

I own thousands of records including plenty of novelty pressings but I’ve never seen this before.

Picked up Kate Bush’s single ‘Eat The Music'. On one side it's white vinyl. On the other... it's a full colour picture!

The flipside of the same record. It’s a full colour picture! On it, two hands are pulling apart half a watermelon. In the background are halves of other soft fruits - papayas, passion fruits, etc.

Just ordered far too many little stickers of my happy pepper (:happy_pepper:) that @andycarolan designed for me, based on my very silly bell pepper thread (https://front-end.social/@sarajw/109994451332222396)

If you're going to @btconf in Düsseldorf or in Amsterdam then you can totally have one, or several!

Here's a preview, they'll be about 3x3 cm:

The aim should be for @maique to see one in the wild and post it on @stickerspotter

Happy Record Store Day to all who celebrate.

Back when not much was available on vinyl I used to love RSD. Sadly it’s become a bit of a major label shovelfest so I won’t be visiting today BUT record shops are still the best shops and I love them so much.

[12] 10 Things I Hate About You is a romantic comedy targeted toward the teen demographic. In essence, it’s William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” retold with a ‘90s high school backdrop. It features a young Heath Ledger as the leading man and Julia Stiles as “the shrew” to be “tamed.” But who’s really being tamed here? It’s really a charming film full of witty dialog, excellent performances, and a great soundtrack.

The ray gun one is tricky. I’m heading more towards Melissa Joan Hart than Gwen Stafani.

It's a Friday where I can work from home and try and get stuff done, so a random CD pick out of my shelf to listen to; today's winner is 'Make Another World', Idlewild's 2007 album. Not as iconic as some of their earlier albums, yet a very solid melodic & rock work.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl I loved the album before that, particularly the lead single ‘Love Steals Us from Loneliness’

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl Agreed.

Idlewild were always a bit of an also-ran Scottish band for me, mind. I much preferred Belle and Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub. They were very similar to Frightened Rabbit, too.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl Sadly I think THE Scottish indie rock band is probably Travis.

Scottish indie/tweepop/indierock is a hell of a rich subgenre though. A lot of my favourites there. JAMC, Orange Juice, Felt, Camera Obscura, Franz Ferdinand, Arab Strap, Vaselines… loads!

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl Well then, flail away at me for saying it’s The Jesus and Mary Chain for sure!

(Also I can’t believe I forgot The Delgados off my earlier list. Shameful.)

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 @hl I went to university in Scotland for four years and love that whole scene.

I reckon you’d probably dig Aidan Moffat in particular. He flits around between folkish stuff, urban grubbiness, electronica, and anything vaguely scabrous. Give this a go - my personal favourite, though heavy on the language: https://songwhip.com/billwells/glasgow-jubilee

Brought back the most Norwegian thing possible from holiday: cactus flavoured licorice-ish… things.

‘With taste of cactus.’ Because everyone knows what that tastes like?

(They are good though)

@jake4480 I’ve had aloe before but not cactus. Does it taste of much? I’m imagining it’s a bit like cucumber.

💭 Task for today - calculating confidence intervals on Net Promoter Scores. I really should write a blogpost on the logic behind this some day.

bendaubney,
@bendaubney@social.lol avatar

@hl Haha.

I work in CX. NPS has its place but it is so badly used in so many places. I had a survey from my doctor yesterday asking me how likely I’d be to recommend the hospital. It’s a hospital! If my pal broke his leg I’d recommend it, otherwise probably not.

I have so much I could say about NPS. Don’t get me started.

bendaubney,

@hl Oh no you don’t. Sit right there while I fire up my PowerPoint document of NPS grievances.

So, hypothetically, if I wanted to setup an experimental online store for physical products, what would be the most cost effective way of doing this?

I'm happy using Webflow, but it's not cheap... so I won't be using that to start with.

My skills in HTML and CSS are very limited, so I need something visual to build upon.

Setting up images and branding is of course no problem.

Advice appreciated!
