this phenomenon where trans women have an easier time carving out niches in male-dominated spaced than anywhere else… fedi, mtg tournaments, speedrunning, etc. it’s a little exhausting really. especially when we get propped up in this “see? we’re inclusive” kind of way when the underlying problem usually hasn’t been addressed — men in these spaces just see us as unthreatening and undesirable

my band has its first ever show this saturday…!!

and we’ve got two more shows lined up every other week too, it’s like we’re a real band!

people always rail against math notation as "illegible" and "elitist gatekeeping" and "unreasonably opaque" and while I'm sympathetic to these arguments I think it's worth understanding this not as a property of some ivory tower elitism but of the percentage of math that is done by hand on chalkboards.

"why don't mathematicians use descriptive names for things" because my arm is tired! have some sympathy.

why is it that there are a million chromium-based browsers but none (afaik) based on firefox? have they not built a reusable core for it or is there some other reason

Idle controversial webdev opinion: you shouldn't assign your urls/pathnames to constants or create any sort of abstraction layer around them. Write them as literal strings, because cool uris don't change anyway.

convinced that the entire tech stack the startup industry uses to build webapps is fundamentally broken and desperately wish I could find someone to pay me to fix it

but instead they'll only pay me to "follow industry best practices" meaning making weird janky apps with too many loading screens and cache invalidation issues and miles of redundant plumbing under the hood

Desperately wish I could configure/customize notifications on my devices more. I want to be able to say "never let this app send me more than X notifications in Y minutes"

“In 2000, Sam Lea converted his once-productive Willamette Valley onion field back into wetlands. The third-generation Oregon farmer excavated several ponds and largely left the land alone. Soon, willows arrived on the wind. Then tule appeared. About five years ago, he noticed wapato had sprouted. The edible tuber, a traditional food for Pacific Northwest Indigenous peoples, is now flourishing. [..] ‘If you look at it now, you’d think we planted it all,’ Lea said”

So bear with me here a second.

"Accessibility” as a conceptual framework is fundamentally tied to the service model of organization.

This is a framework that sees a problem (eg “people are going hungry”) & provides a service ("give them food”). If you try to scale this you immediately run into the "access" question: who is your service benefiting and who is getting left behind? There are whole industry built around trying to answer this question.

I think they're asking the wrong question.

lots of aged punk rockers will tell u to wear earplugs to shows and be careful about sound levels bc u don’t want to get tinnitus for life but I’m here to tell you that u should get tinnitus for a cool & sexy reason like punk rock instead for a loser reason like “too stressful of a home life for 3 years” like I did

A thing I’ve been thinking about a lot is, yeah, maybe all the viral engagement can be best found on xyz platform. but do you actually want your core audience to be xyz users? Audiences aren’t commodities: a TikTok audience is going to engage with your work fundamentally differently than, say, people at a local crafts fair, or the people who came to see another band on the setlist

Maybe growing up in a gold rush town gives you a different education but if there’s one thing I learned it’s that the way to come out on top in the hype cycle is to be the one who owns the general store.

storytellers love to make their stories get bigger and bigger in scale as they progress and that's cool and I'm not knocking it but I wish there were more stories that did the opposite. I want worldbuilding-heavy fantasy epics that slowly transform into intimate slice of life romances and cosmic science fiction whose grand emotional stakes center around what to make for dinner tonight.

okay so there’s C, Lisp, Forth, and APL. are there other major families of computing? meaning: languages that require seriously changing how you think to switch between? I’m including most mainstream languages in the C family.

a thing I wish someone had told me when I was younger is that if you feel like you don’t really have emotions, or like your emotions are extremely muted or understated, or like you don’t understand what emotions are supposed to be, you are exhibiting a symptom of cptsd or chronic depression (possibly motivated by untenable material conditions) and you should look for help with that. that goes for men just as much as anyone. if this started around puberty you might also have gender dysphoria.

the leftist struggle can be most succinctly described as the effort to create, through a ruthless dialectical process, the perfect post, which will trigger an ice-9-esque chain reaction and remake the entire world into its final utopian shape overnight.
