@bagder "May you succeed at rewriting curl" could be the new "May you live in interesting times"

erinc, to iPad
@erinc@mastodon.social avatar

I just returned my iPad Pro M4. #iPad is not a computer.

Here are some of the things I couldn’t do:

  • No custom app launcher like Alfred or Raycast
  • No local development
  • Inconsistent or non-existent keyboard shortcuts
  • No multiple audio streams
  • No browser extensions for Chrome/Brave
  • No granular firewall apps like Little Snitch
  • Can’t connect to my hardware crypto wallet
  • Can’t export/backup my #Protonmail
  • Can’t use #Logseq plugins
  • Can’t backup (via Arc). iCloud is not backup.

@erinc Yeah, I fear that Apple's plan is ultimately to eliminate computers from their product lines.

If a program says it wants CUDA 10 can I get away with installing CUDA 12 or does CUDA 10 mean "CUDA 10 exactly"

It's specifically asking for "cudart64_101.dll"

PHP needs a code of conduct for the project itself. Is there anyone willing to push for an RFC to add one with me? #php

kboyd,

@sarah I'm not in a headspace where i can contribute to side projects at the moment, but I do think a CoC would be great. I saw how things went last time around & was not pleased with how some folks reacted to the idea, so I want to speak up and offer a clear thumbs up this time. :)

The double-edged sword of my ADHD procrastination strikes again.

Pro: I'm very good in a crisis.
Con: I'm only good in a crisis.

kboyd,

@Quinnypig another con, in my own experience: this means that everything gets sidelined until it crosses the crisis line

Taffer, to AWS
@Taffer@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I briefly looked at AWS S3 Glacier storage, thinking maybe having a second cloud host for my backups would be good.

I can't actually figure out how much this will cost me because they charge per operation (you know, like PUT, GET, etc.) in addition to the storage costs (which I easily figured out).

The kicker? I work at AWS. 🤷

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@Taffer After many years of putting it off, this month I added a lifecycle rule to my backup bucket to convert objects to Glacier instant retrieval.

My guess is that it will cut my storage costs nearly in half.

But i can only guess, because understanding AWS pricing is impossible.

What I should be doing: wrestling with DynamoDB.

What I am doing instead: reading Dick Tracy (1990) trivia.

I suppose it helps that I already wrestled the annoying part of Dynamo into submission. Now I just have to whack-a-mole the edge cases.

Remember a few weeks ago when some clown shoes lawyers tried a bogus copyright takedown of merch saying "Fuck the LAPD" on behalf of the LAPD, and the initial legal response was "LOL, no"? Well the longer response is out, and it is a work of art. They managed to use the phrase "Fuck the LAPD" 15 times in 4 pages. Make sure to check the footnotes, too. A work of pure savagery, with citations.

Fascinating piece of US culture: if you have an American flag sticker, t-shirt, hat, etc you are almost certainly a huge asshole. And there are even special variations of the flag (eg thin blue line) to let people know specifically what kind of asshole you are

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@danirabbit for almost my whole life, until just a few years ago, this did not seem to be the case in Canada. The flag was a global symbol of kindness and understanding.

And then a bunch of shitstains ruined it.

(Although, being that the whole country is founded on colonialism, the "global symbol of kindness and understanding" bit was also mostly a lie.)
