I am amused by the suggestions from Vermont state agencies that people should bring a paper map in case GPS stops working. After 17 years with smartphones and Google/Apple Maps… ** do people even know how to read paper maps anymore? ** 🤣

@amcasari Yes, our cell networks weren’t built for this volume. It would be interesting (stressful!) to be in a network operations center today watching traffic volumes across the networks!

That moment when you take your first look at your work messages and remember that for probably 99% of the world, today is just another Monday. 😀

It’s a little different for us here in northwest Vermont (and many other places) because… #Eclipse

@amcasari Yes, it looks amazing today! Looking forward to it!

Waking up to bright blue skies in Vermont for Eclipse Day! Hoping they will stay that way… although current forecasts call for high, translucent clouds to come in during the early afternoon. (Which still should be okay for eclipse viewing.) The fun begins around 2:20pm, with totality at 3:26, and then it all ending by 4:30-ish.

Today’s mission is simple: figure out where the sun will be in the sky starting around 3:00pm-ish so that we can plan where best to watch tomorrow’s big event! (Without actually leaving our neighborhood 🙂)

@gcvsa Ha! 🤦‍♂️ OF COURSE there would be apps for this! Thanks for pointing it out.

And tomorrow, how many times will these songs be streamed?

  • Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
  • Dark Side of the Moon (album) by Pink Floyd

Should I Stay (In) or Should I Go (Out) Now? The Vermont Eclipse Dilemma - what happens when you have 10s or 100s of thousands of people driving to an area where the roads are more meant for maybe hundreds of vehicles??

ABC News has declared that we are in the best spot in the US to see Monday’s eclipse:

  • Burlington, Vermont: Mostly clear, best spot to see eclipse

Let’s see if that forecast holds on Monday!

(And how many more people will now come here!)

It’s 5:45am here in northern . We have about an inch of snow on the ground and the snow heavily coming down.

Now is the moment when we parents are just waiting … and waiting… for the phone call.

Will school be canceled today? Or will they just go ahead with it?

We should know soon, we think… but meanwhile we wait for the calls…

"WHAT...Snow and mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 7 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph through tonight."

It's only raining and windy right now here in northwest ... but it's looking like a mess over the next 36 hours...

Q - do you know of well-researched articles, or academic papers, that explore the risks to the Internet’s infrastructure due to climate change?

I.e. how do we keep the Internet functioning in the midst of extreme weather and other aspects of climate change? For example, if sea levels rise, what will that do to subsea cable landing stations?

I am building a list of articles and papers, and I have some.. but am looking for more.

Thanks!

@dsc Interesting. Is the general thinking just to try to move them to higher elevations? Or some other form of hardening?

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@dsc That makes sense. And yes, funny thing about needing power. 🙁

It's "ocean", not "oceans". Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@synlogic @davidho Fascinating! (And the “Internet” argument resonates with me given what I do and who I work for 😃).

And yet in all the globes that adorn my office, they specifically label different “oceans”, i.e. Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, etc.

Giving rise to the thinking that they are separate, when in fact they are all interconnected.

Hmmm… 🤔

If you are looking for a summary of what is happening with the terrible Baltimore bridge collapse, the page about the event is being constantly updated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Scott_Key_Bridge_collapse

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@Tooden It seems like it was the mayday call from the ship that prompted police to stop all traffic going onto the bridge. (But the maintenance workers were already out on the bridge fixing potholes)

Mastodon q: in the 'advanced' Tweetdeck-style view, where does my 'Federated timeline' come from? Most of the people in it I've never heard of, and while I have no moral objection to the nude images of attractive women that some of the posts carry, they are distracting and a bit shit when in a public place.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@brucelawson The “Federated” timeline is the union of all the accounts that people on your server follow. So all the postings that are “federated” onto your local server.

Timelines:

  • Home - accounts you follow (from anywhere)

  • Local - accounts on your server

  • Federated - accounts followed by accounts on your server

I think Federated was more useful in the early (late 2010s) years of Mastodon, or perhaps today if you are on a smaller server.

I never look at mine.

Was amazed by the “league” that I wound up in yesterday. The leader did 4,280 “XP” (experience points) in ONE DAY. 🤯

To understand why this is amazing, each language lesson in Duolingo is typically worth 10-20 XP. With bonuses and rewards some can get to 40, 50, or 80 XP.

To get to 4,280 requires a HUGE number of lessons and investment of MANY HOURS of time!

A mind-blowing amount of work.. clearly someone is extremely focused on learning a new language! 😲

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@djasa Oh, interesting. Never knew about that aspect. Thanks!
