Any people knowledgeable about the "Security BSides" event who are also editors?

Or any editors looking for an article to improve?

has become a global set of community-driven security conferences / unconferences ... but the Wikipedia article about it could sure use some attention. It's just three short paragraphs that could be expanded to have more info about the event(s) and history - and more secondary reliable sources added.

What's going with the Internet in western and southern Africa right now?

A lot of the region is currently experiencing Internet outages. @radar and IODA are both tracking the outages:

(hat tip to @dbelson for his great CloudflareRadar work!)

There are multiple reports on Twitter/X about "subsea cable cuts" from telecom companies... but even they are not definitive.

Anyone seeing clear statements?

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@dbelson @radar Oh, interesting! I hadn't seen that Azure statement. And it's not clear either... "reduced total capacity" doesn't mean it's gone... it could just be severely plugged up with traffic.

Hmmm

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@dbelson @radar Yes, this article came out related to Nigeria... but again it is recycling the Vodacom and MTN posts that came out earlier today: https://nairametrics.com/2024/03/14/breaking-undersea-cable-damage-causes-internet-outage-in-nigeria-telcos-banks-hit/

Nothing new or more specific.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@cybeardjm @dbelson Thanks for all that info. Useful to see what they are saying. (Although again no specifics beyond problems with undersea cables.)

Happy Pi Day!*

For everyone else... Happy Thursday! 😀

Yesterday marked 1,000 days straight of using the Day One journaling app, so I wrote a post about how this one little app has become so central to my daily workflow: https://www.danyork.com/2024/03/1000-days-of-journaling-with-day-one.html

I also included a bit about how I use Day One for chronological note-taking and also use Obsidian for more topic-based note-taking.

This was an easy blog post for me to write! There is so much wrong with the State of Nevada’s request for an injunction to prevent Meta from rolling out end-to-end encryption in Facebook Messenger. For starters, WhatsApp has had E2EE since 2016, Apple iMessage since 2011 … and more.

Hopefully the district court in Nevada will agree and NOT allow the injunction! We’ll see.

"YEA!!!!!!" comes the happy shout from upstairs! And it is repeated again!

Yes, indeed, today is a SNOW DAY here in our part of northwest Vermont! No school.

We haven't yet had a large amount of snow, but it's still coming down, there are high winds, and the message is that the roads are very slippery.

(Of course, for me as a remote worker this is just another day... as long as the power stays on. 😀)

If you want to watch amazing 🥌curling🥌, TSN is showing the Brier final on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/live/2uj6POMPvo0?si=SDsHCT1uBlsplNun [1]

It is Saskatchewan (Mike McEwan) against Team Canada (Brad Gushue).

These guys routinely make shots that mere casual players like me can only dream of making!

(The Brier is the annual men’s curling championship in Canada, so you get to see the best teams from across the country.)

@esg Is that new this year? I thought in past years I had to go through other ways to see them from here in the US.

And yes, I’m watching the final now!!

Waking up to a reminder that even though we have had warm days recently, this IS March in northern ! 😃

(And it’s forecast to warm up and change to rain, so this will probably all be gone by the afternoon..)

Just learned of someone planning their wedding for during the total solar eclipse on April 8th! (Not here in Vermont but somewhere else in the path.)

If you want to go for once-in-a-lifetime moments, that certainly is one of them! 🎉

@hardaker HA! There IS that!

About 10” (25cm) has fallen in the last 12 hours and it’s still falling. Wet and heavy. Supposed to get to well above freezing by the afternoon. #Vermont #SilentSunday #Snow

danyork,

@sjthomas @rickscully Soooooo tempting! 🤔 But we’re not quite set up for something like that where we live in a suburb in Shelburne. 🤣 Would need fencing… a small barn… all that kind of stuff!

Ah, the joys of modern computing...

my iMac is making noises that sound like notifications from some social network ... and it may be somewhere in the 178 tabs I currently have open in Firefox... or maybe it's in the dozen tabs I have open in Safari... or the 20-ish in Chrome...

... or maybe it's in the 22+ apps that I have open in MacOS. 🤔

Thankfully it's not (yet) too annoying...

@arielwaldman Great video! Thanks for sharing that. Your video brought back a memory to me… 34 years ago I was a field worker at a camp in the middle of Greenland (GISP II). I feel like maybe they had a “Jamesway” hut, too. Do you know if those huts were deployed in other arctic places?

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@arielwaldman Thanks for the reply and I understand. Thanks for all you are doing to educate people about Antarctica. I'm excited for your documentary!

Listening to the and Security Workshop at - Kim Davies is currently giving an update about plans to rollover the (Key Signing Key) for DNSSEC.

Interesting to read about the dilemma of the hardware security module (HSM) vendor ceasing to make the HSMs that was using...

(More about HSMs in general: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_security_module )

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

There was also an update about plans for an algorithm rollover for the KSK. ICANN had a comment period and is working on a revised report.

The key point is that there will NOT be a change in the algorithm this year. They are looking at 2029 as the timeframe for a change.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@jpmens My understanding is that it is because the Keyper HSM’s are going away and will not be supported after 2027. So at some point Verisign needs to move to new HSMs.
